Oats - Cook it with Milk or Water?

Since 1/2 price SPAM has gone the way of the dodo, I tried eating a healthier option. Camp milk on this one, nuke it for 100secs top with honey. BOOM! Breakfast!

PSA: You're in Ozbargain. Buy the homebrand oats, not Uncles.

  • Oats satchet, water. Very bland, but gets the job done 👍

  • Son, are you talking about porridge? Water in the microwave then add milk.

  • PSA: You're in Ozbargain. Buy the homebrand oats, not Uncles.

Absolutely, buy whatever is cheapest. The exact same quality of oats are used regardless of brand. Literally the only difference is packaging.

I disagree. I've been having honey quick oats every morning for a few weeks and only bought a different brand just now. And I could clearly taste the difference (the non-brand name was much better). As for why (since it's basically the exact same ingredients as you mention), I don't know. Maybe some brands shreds the oats more. Maybe it's different flavorings/sweeteners.

Once/if you add other stuff maybe it doesn't matter, but I've been eating it with no extra additions.

  • Unsweetened almond milk. 90-120seconds. I mix in a scoop of whey isolate after for some protein.

  • Milk, normal oats and Milo

Add milk if i want to make a sweet oak (with honey). Add water if im making a savoury version and have it with side dishes.

Add some medjool dates pieces to make it sweeter (you can reduce honey if required). And enough amount of sliced almonds soaked with oats overnight will make it yummy. Honestly, just milk, oat, chia seeds and honey was a bit bland for me but after adding these two ingredients I cannot praise it enough.

  • Quick oats in microwave with water is surprisingly perfectly fine.

Also surprising is that the coles brand honey quick oats (or whatever home brand we've been getting from coles) is much nicer than the honey quick oats uncle tobys I bought recently (because it was on sale)

    • Coles has been stepping up their game.. they are every where now feels like old school no frills where every product had a no frills counterpart.

  • Healthy snack
    30g quick oats homebrand
    80g soy milk
    50g water

  • Here is my trick take it or leave it but I stand by it and will die on a hill for it.

Cook it in water according to packet.

Then once cooked add full cream milk POWDER you need a lot to make it thicc and creamy.

Add a lot of powder until it becomes really thick and creamy.. if you only add a little there is no point you won't get the effect of the thiccness and creaminess.

    Enjoy.

    Honey optional.

EDIT: if it gets too dry then add liquid milk until consistency is desired reached.

    Yummy enjoy!

  • Save money and minimise your enviro footprint by skipping heating.

  • Milk. Then add berries and peanut butter as toppings.

  • I wonder what happens if I microwave goat milk or coconut/almond milk… In the office

    • It gets warm then hot.

  • soymilk?

  • I do 2 cups of oats, then:

    1 Cup Almond milk
    1 Cup Full cream milk
    1 Cup water

and I usually do the overnight soak. Sometimes break a cinnamol scroll in there as well. Usually serve with grated apple and sultanas.

  • Next question…
How to cook oat so it doesn't screw up my tummy after eating it? My tummy goes the wacko after eating it but I really like oats.

    • Make sure you are soaking them and eat warm with milk, some fruit in it might help see my other post

  • Let oaks soak in water for at least 1 hours or overnight, oats should absorb most of the water,
Then add 200ml milk, a teaspoon of Cacao, 2 tablespoons flax sead, 1 tablespoon psyllium husk, add strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. Heat and serve add sliced Banana and teaspoon of Cinnamon on banana. Cheap version minus extras…..

No thanks, there is a clear difference atleast for me, sticking with deals on Uncles.

This is how I do it.
1 part oats, 1 part milk (i use regular soy or full cream cow juice)-> nuke'em in microwave for 2-3 mins. Add 1 more part of milk and micro for 30 seconds, add top up with your fav toppings, let it rest and enjoy!

  • Bulking: Milk
    Cutting: Water
    Maintenance: 50/50

    :)

  • My favourite is having whole oats, cooking with equal parts water until oats are soft, then adding milk and cooking that down just a bit.

  • I do half milk half water

  • been doing this most of my life now - it's my most important meal of the day - if I miss it, I get into a hangry nasty argument with anyone before 1030am - because I'm hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) before eating - and fruit alone didn't help

I combine this with making my drip filter coffee in the morning -

first boil the electric jug - get small bowl - add 35gm of home brand rolled oats (I use $10 scales from Coles), then top just level with boiling water (I move the bowl while adding the boiling water and stop as soon as all the oats move), cover and wait about 3 mins or until no water shows when I tip the bowl to test

I then make my filter coffee (10gms ground in filter paper from DAISO), on scales topped to 470gm (correct weight when I can't see the level under the filter cone

about 2 mins later I come back from turning on my laptop and/or Salute to the Sun yoga, to find the coffee dripped, and the oats have absorbed all the water and are now moist and warm and lovely

I get out my Jalna Sweet'n'Creamy yoghurt and milk from the fridge, dessert spoon a big dollop of yoghurt on the oats, spread it around the top, sprinkle 5 bits of walnut on top, a splash of milk, also in my coffee

sit at my laptop and eat in 2 minutes - and I'm good for the day - not hungry for 5 hours - if eaten at 830am, I'm not hungry until 130pm - so can even work later at lunchtime - total cost of breakfast around 40 cents (oats 8c, milk 15c, coffee 15c, heating 2c?)

I first started eating rolled oats for breakfast after hearing a visiting French chef on the radio saying 'Australians are stupid - they wake up with the alarm 15 minutes before they need to leave, rush around getting ready, skip breakfast, arrive at work unable to think, then go out at 1030am to spend $4+ for coffee and junk food muffin - better, wake up 30 mins earlier, have a relaxed breakfast, arrive at work with your brain already working and you can hit the ground at full speed.'

totally works for me - the best change to my diet ever - I notice every time I skip it - I get into a nasty argument (hypoglycemia) - in fact today I went for an early morning fasting blood test (before breakfast) then walked into McDonald's contemplating baked-neck muffin and hash brown - but saw the hash browns sitting and knew it wouldn't be fresh crisp, and don't like the coffee - for $10.50 ? Yeah nah. I walked out, came home, had my usual coffee and rolled oats - and I'm good for the day. Have a nice one ! ;-p

    • Are you actually hypoglycaemic, or is it possible that you've convinced yourself that must be it in order to explain yourself being "hangry" in the morning? There's this thing we all have called a liver, and people generally have enough enough glycogen stores to avoid becoming hypo for a few days (unless they're diabetic or have an insulinoma)

      • dunno - but I previously usually ate like just banana for breakfast - and would thereafter get in a nasty argument

after I started eating rolled oats, friends said to me 'what's changed ? You're so much nicer now …'

Thanks for the question - I'll ask my doc about hypoglycemia when I get my blood test results in a couple days.

    • For the literal out there

      Do NOT boil the jug.

      • sorry - jug the boil

  • I do water with a chopped banana. Yoghurt at the end.

  • I find Oats are creamy enough with just water. Spoon full of brown sugar or honey on top.

  • I have water, but I can't digest diary, so…

    • Then use almond milk or oat milk.

      • I don't like either of those, I prefer rice milk, but it doesn't always go with everything, hence why I drink coffee black.

        • Yeah I get that, the taste of alternative milks is quite different to cow's milk. Why can't you digest dairy? Is it because you are lactose intolerant? If so, then use lactose-free milk. It tastes like regular milk, just a little sweeter. That's what I drink 95% of the time as i am lactose intolerant.

          • @PleasureMe: I can't handle the protein in the milk, so that eliminates Goat's milk and even lactose-free milk, I've attempted to drink lactose-free as my doctor thought it was the sugar in milk I couldn't digest, but it also caused severe stomach cramps.

It's easier just to cut most of the milk out of my diet as I can't handle the stomach cramps, sometimes they're so severe I have to lay down and wait for the pain to pass over which could take hours. I actually went to the emergency room once because the pain was so bad and I thought I might have had appendicitis. My sister for the last few years is starting to have the same symptoms as me, so I suspect she'll have to start avoiding diary too.

            • @Ultimate Gattai: That really sucks! They are creating new milks all the time, hopefully there will be one you like. I actually had Pea Protein milk a couple weeks ago (available at Woolies). But I didn't like the taste. Maybe give that a go if you haven't tried it before.

              • @PleasureMe: Yeah, it does suck as I used to love eating Dairy, I used to eat alot of Yoghurt, but I had to go to dairy free Yoghurt and haven't found much that tastes quite the same, but I live with ti.

Pea Protein milk? I haven't heard of that one before, so maybe I will try it.

Oats are really sugars and starches in disguise, might be cheap but not healthy.
According to a local manufacturers website, one normal serve of oats is around 23g of carbs. Thats equivalent to a bit over 5 teaspoonfuls of white sugar.
Everybody knows how healthy that is !

    • Contrary to popular belief. Facts are always negged on OzB.

  • If you're on a diet and are boring, water.
If you like food that has taste, milk.

  • I do water for 60sec, stir, add milk, 60 sec, stir, add milk and then eat

  • Dry oats in a bowl, pour boiling water on it until it is barely covered, maybe a tad less, cover it with a plate and let it sit for five minutes. Oats will soak up the water and get nice and fluffy. Add toppings here or mix in a scoop of protein powder. Mmm.

  • Ideally you're cooking it in a saucepan, although I often do microwave because it's quicker and makes less mess.

    Perfect porridge:
    - oats in saucepan, cover with water
    - add 1/4 tsp turmeric and a cinnamon stick, I also like a handful of sultanas which go really soft and juicy through cooking
    - when it's come to the boil, add 1/2 cup milk of your choice
    - simmer stirring often until it's gloopy
    - serve with a bit of brown sugar or honey if you like it a bit sweeter

  • Best and easiest porridge I've made is using a pressure cooker, now that I've tried it there is no going back.

    2:5 ratio so for example,

    2 cups oats
5 cups water (no milk needed in pressure cooker)
    Tablespoon of butter

High pressure for 3 or 4 minutes
Quick release pressure after that time.

Very creamy, don't need to stir or watch it while cooking.

  • Why is there no option for overnight soaked oats…. With yogurt as well as milk or non dairy milk….

  • Voted milk, but indeed best with water first, then milk in the end

  • PSA: You're in Ozbargain. Buy the homebrand oats, not Uncles.

Sorry. I'm here for awesome bargains, I'm not destitute. Lmao

  • Milk for better taste and less healthier (fat).

Water for less taste but healthier (less fat).

    • Dietary fat consumption is not unhealthy, contrary to what decades of industry guidelines would have us believe

  • I'm a little lactose intolerant but love the taste of dairy so I combine Greek yoghurt with water before adding oats

  • skim milk.. anything else means you're a genuine psychopath

  • I tried eating a healthier option

Are you sure oats are a healthy option?
