I really want to get into the Nintendo world, but can’t justify this much on such old hardware. I’ve seen some third party games played and they look and run terribly.

Yep. For me, Ninentdo consoles are always about the first party games. Sure it makes it hard if you only want one console, but there's just something about Nintendo games…

Yeah, unless you want a gameboy style portable console, you'd only buy this for the Nintendo first party titles. That's why I have mine.
For me I mainly play Nintendo games on Nintendo consoles. There are gems. Third party games always go to Xbox or PS. If you agreed that newer games doesn't necessarily mean better/fun games. You should probably get a switch or even a 3ds and play it now. I recently bought a 2dsxl off eBay used of course. I enjoyed it more than my switch. Maybe because I haven't touch the 3ds library before. I had a lot of fun which those 1080p/4k/60fps specs can not offer me. Maybe it's unusual that my ps5/xsx/switch are all collecting dust. Well, I finished Elden ring on Xbox before I got the 2dsxl. Hardware doesn't mean everything, the games do.
I always said gameplay and story is king and it will always come first above graphics. Pc gamers that are always chasing the latest graphics tend to forget that.
Yes and no. I think there was a time where everyone n kept citing space invaders and tetris as examples of games not needing good graphics. Well graphic fedility has advanced greatly since then and games like elden ring, grand tourismo, yakuza just would not be possible without visuals as good as the gameplay.
I did pull out my old Game-boy (not colour) and fired up Pokemon blue the other day. Having no back-light is strange though haha. I think paying this much on a console, I would like to take some of my other games portable too.

@gottacatchemall: I also have an unpatched switch but I’m still tempted to upgrade. The battery life is garbage and I don’t know if I want to deal with the hassle of injecting a payload every time it dies since I only play handheld.
The price of a decent SD card, reader, jig and battery replacement will already get me 4 games anyway.
So I could probably get $350 resale for my V1, get this OLED for the way better screen and battery life plus a couple games for the same price without all the hassle.

Mainly portability. Imagine you are going to fly internationally, and imagine taking your xbox, power supply, screen, controllers, battery pack to power it all - onto a plane.
