GPU to Replace HD5770 - Budget under $300

Ol mate has a dead HD5770 GPU and doesn't want to spend too much to get it replaced.

Can someone recommend an equivalent (or slightly better) modern card to replace it? Under $300.

Thanks

  • Not a lot of choice if you're shopping for brand new cards. There's really only 1 card.

The RX 6500 XT goes for under $300 but there is no lower tier product than that, this is the cheapest newest gen GPU out there.

    • there is no lower tier product than that

      The RX 6400 just launched
Also the GTX 1650 can be had for under $300
Not 100% sure but I’d guess the RX 6500 XT would be the best value out of the three

  • OK thanks. :)

    • Good idea, thanks!

Also a good idea to send this link to your friend so that he knows what to look for (how to spot a defective GPU)

Comment on that YT video also helpful to read. one example

"One more symptom of a bad card (and seller) is when the card only shows an image as long as no driver is installed. This is basically late stage dying GPU, past just artifacts. ie it'll boot and show windows just fine, but when the driver is installed and loaded, you get a blank screen, and on subsequent boots it'll show the boot logo but as soon as the driver loads (before desktop) it's blank again. If you buy a card on ebay and the seller shows a GPU-Z screenshot without a driver installed (or saying "microsoft basic display adapter") that's an immediate red flag for this issue. Or if the seller claims something like "boots to desktop, not tested further". Avoid those like the plague, those cards are basically one step away from giving no output whatsoever/being completely dead."

Other red flags to spot is if the seller sells nothing but graphics cards and they have almost no eBay feedback under their name, e.g seller with multiples of GPU's listed for sale but no feedback, or has bad feedback. This is most likely a miner offloading their cards using a brand new eBay account, and you should be inspecting the GPU in person before you pay them.

Also interesting comparison (summary an old secondhand card less than $300 out performs the new one!):
    6500XT vs 1070:

    • Makes sense, nobody could sell a well used card with no warranty for the same price as a brand new card if it didn’t outperform it

The only new card you can buy around this budget is RX6500xt, though with its PCIe 4.0 x4 bandwidth, it will perform differently depends on how old is your CPU/Motherboard.

I recommend you consider raise your budget to around $400(if you can), and hold a tiny longer to see if you can find a good deal of RX6600.

    consider RX6600 have 100% performance before using RSR, GTX1070 is ~104%(no RSR/DLSS support), RX6500xt or GTX1650 is ~73%.

You can use RSR with RX6600 or RX6500xt, but you have nothing on those GTX cards (RTX card is a different story but your budget won't allow you to get a RTX card)

Note: RSR is a AMD technology to boost frame rate in almost every game. DLSS is a Nvidia technology to boost frame rate in DLSS-supported game.
