Hopefully you can scrape 50 cents together soon.

I got all excited then saw it was Arlec, not Varta as I looked at the photo.

    • +5

I got like 200 of these and now my home has burnt down.

      • the upside is you get to choose a new house - c'mon down !

new law regarding these type of electrical socket adapters is coming soon as they don't protect from surge. Don't think they will be allowed to sell these anymore in the future.

    • +1

Do explain or point me to the article?

      • -1

no article, electrical engineering collogues were talking about it. The summary of it was that normal people would plug a kettle and microwave into these plugs together and when one faulted they fused the other attached device.

        • so the circuit breaker is useless, the residual system useless.

weird. what a waste all that protective cabling and systems don't provide that simple protection.

          • +1

@quog: it use to be there when products were made in Australia but the government allows all these unchecked Chinese products in. So what can you do?

            • +5

@Will Mcdonald: You can't understand what is surge and what is overload. You don't understand how overload or fault protection is working.
All electrical items selling in Australia must be complied with Australian Standards, not necessarily to be made in Australia.

    • +2

But it's fine to plug into a surge protected powerboard right?

      • +2

As long as the two devices are sacrificial or low voltage devices with internal surge protection. Than yes

new law regarding these type of electrical socket adapters is coming soon as they don't protect from surge

I don't think you know what you are taking about.

There is no law coming that will require a surge protector.

      • +2

Are you questioning his “electrical engineering collogues“? Surely they would know all about surges from microwaves fusing the other device!

      • -2

When's your first space flight happening? Do and believe whatever you want, ain't my problem.

        • Ah the classic insult followed by doubling down with extra arrogance rather than admitting you are wrong and have no idea what you are taking about.

There is no current or future requirement for double adaptors and power boards to have surge protectors.

The issue with double adaptors is that there is no overload protection (which power boards must have) meaning when people plug in 2 devices with a total current draw of more than 10 amps there is a fire risk.

But you go ahead do and believe whatever you want, ain't my problem. It's not like I know what I am talking about

          • -2

@spaceflight: Literally don't care if you do or don't believe it. Why do i have to prove anything, whats the benefit to me. I'm more curious about when you are going on a space flight.

  • Any other stores? Please report if u saw some in eastern suburbs.

As with all cheap shit fire hazard electrical socket things, give it a shake before purchase and if it makes a rattle throw it back in the pile.

    • +1

What does the rattle indicate? Apart from it being a deadlier variety, like a snake.

      • Would like to know this as well. I just found one that rattles…

    • +1

Or if it's Arlec, hide them underneath a shelf. Daily good deed toward rest of humanity: check! ;-D

Some things aren't worth saving $2 for. Spend a couple $ more and get something quality, once. I bought a HPM one back in the late 1980s, stood on it by mistake 2 or 3 times, still using it now. I haven't seen one of these in person but I know what Arlec is like. Try standing on one like you're walking in the dark and accidentally stood on it momentarily before realising and lifting your foot back off… just make sure the power is turned off first, because I bet I know what the result will be.

      • While I know Arlec isn't as good as HPM but I'm at lost with your test by standing on it. Why would anyone try standing on this thing? Aren't they supposed to be plug into a power outlet on the wall?

        • +1

[Sigh] It's a figure of speech, illustration, or example. It's like saying to a passenger who's joking about your cheap car, "If you think my car is bad, try walking." After saying it most of us understand the driver isn't going to pull over, drag us out, and make us walk from Sydney to Woolongong.

The point is these are awful quality which doesn't matter with many other products apart from creating more landfill sooner. But in this case it encases something that can kill. And if this Arlec product is as bad as others I've seen, It was just one example to say it will probably fail much sooner, and in more situations than something of better quality, so is it really worth saving a couple of $ when there's a real danger present.

And people use them plugged into extension leads too. That's where mine was when I stood on it those times. I currently have a laptop and powered speakers plugged into one, in the end of an extension lead, all on a small desk on wheels I move from room to room. I do the same in the garage when I use both a drill and a jigsaw on the same woodworking project.

  • +1

    Me: "50 cents… hm… might get one."
Also me: "Oops it's Arlec… are they paying me 50 cents to take it? Nope. Pass!"

  • +1

I would want to check these are not like some double adapter/power boards I've bought that actually are slightly the wrong size (Made in China) and standard plugs either do not fit in easily or have to be forced in, or are wobbly, and fail to make and retain a good contact

a small quality control issue - but hey that's my 50 cents - and if you've heard of China's fifty-cent army - they're working hard - to post propaganda … power to the sheeple … ?
