Am I Entitled to a Refund?

Hi Fellow stingy rays,

I am in a situation where I bought an item directly from the supplier but found the same item a lot cheaper (half price) at a store I randomly walked into today.

I have contact the supplier requesting a refund as they have a 7 day no questions asked refund policy but I mentioned that I found the product elsewhere for a lot cheaper.

They are now refusing to refund me.
Am I entitled to a refund?

Update: got the refund but now they’re actively trying to find where I bought it at so they can up their prices :(

What is the actual refund policy and on what basis are they refusing a refund? Need more details.

In general though, no obligation on businesses to offer a "change of mind" refund which this would be.

      The actual refund policy is:

We offer a full money-back guarantee for all purchases made on our website. If you are not satisfied with the product that you have purchased from us, you can get your money back no questions asked. You are eligible for a full reimbursement within 7 calendar days of your purchase.

I have purchased the product online and it is arriving tomorrow according to the tracker. Item was purchased on April 16th.

So the item hasn't even arrived yet, obviously they can't refund you mid-shipping.

Let it arrive, then initiate a return request under that policy. You'll likely be liable for return postage.

how on earth do you expect them to refund you while its shipping, the way you've worded it in your post suggests that you've went back to the supplier with item in hand asking for a return and them refusing to do it. they can't refund you when they dont have the item for obvious reasons

        • This is what they replied:

While we do advise our stockist of our recommend retail price on items- we do not have control over the prices which they set within their business. We are unable to refund the purchase which was made over the weekend through our website.

@mrhanky71: it seems that you only asked for a refund and not a return

        • +2

          I agree wholeheartedly BUT:

"You are eligible for a full reimbursement within 7 calendar days of your purchase."

Purchase date 16th April - it is now the 22nd. That's 6 days. If it doesn't arrive today it won't arrive till Tuesday next week (26th). OUTSIDE of the 7 calendar days from purchase.

In the words it is written, isn't the full reimbursement policy a bit bogus? All they need to do is make sure it doesn't get delivered within 7 days (post it late).

If it said 7 days from delivery it would be a diffferent story?

"We offer a full money-back guarantee for all purchases made on our website. If you are not satisfied with the product that you have purchased from us, you can get your money back no questions asked. "

So why are you not satisfied with the product?

        • +1

Too expensive for what it does/Didn't help me start a conversation with the cute barista/stop asking questions

        • Not “satisfied” with the price of the product

  • +1

    Yes.
I don't think the fact you found it cheaper elsewhere should be an issue with a no questions asked refund policy.

    • +4

Their policy states "… If you are not satisfied with the product that you have purchased from us …"

The product is quite specific wording.

OP has an issue with the price, not to product.

Of course OP could lie (no one would do that though. Right?) and say they're just do not like the received item, but they'll be paying postage back still.

      • +3

At the time I commented, all op had stated was that they had a “no questions asked return policy”. Very vague.

But you’re right. It does say product.

I personally wouldn’t return anything via post for change of mind, because if I were the seller, I would be pissed off at them for wasting my time and money. I certainly don’t offer change of mind returns when I sell on eBay. People take advantage.

        • Agreed, agreed, and agreed :)

  • well, there are some factors such as if the item was opened or not, box condition etc. or what basis they are refusing the refund (most of which are just lies since the its a "no questions asked refund policy"). from what it seems like though, you are probably entitled to a refund since im assuming it isn't open.

    • I Haven’t received it yet so it should be in good condition. Bought it online and it’s arriving tomorrow.

      • ok, well. If they refuse to refund you ONCE THEY GOT THE ITEM BACK AND INSPECTED IT then you are definitely entitled to a refund minus return shipping costs.

  • +2

You said to them your reason was you found it cheaper elsewhere, too late https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fP0MXJAQhmo

    • no questions asked refund policy

      • +1

OP never says he was asked for a reason, he volunteered it himself.

        • +4

I should’ve just waited for it to arrive first and returned it saying I’m not satisfied with the product

          • @mrhanky71: Well you already said spite price, so…

          • +1

@mrhanky71: Well, you can't say you're satisfied or not if you haven't got it yet. Once you do, you could still find that you are unsatisfied with it as the reason for the return. The fact you saw it cheaper and spoke to them about it is a different issue and is just a couple of people having a chat, saying how unfortunate it was having found the same thing at a cheaper price, and could you get a refund of the difference. You were happy to accept the fact you paid too much for it (buyer beware) after their refusal. That conversation won't matter if, once you get it, you open it and find you aren't satisfied with it for <insert reason here> ( * not really required if they say no-questions-asked). That would be a whole new issue. It could be that it isn't big enough, you don't like the build quality, the colour wasn't what you expected etc. We don't even know what the item was, so it's hard to suggest a reason. The main thing is you weren't satisfied, not that you found it cheaper elsewhere. Rookie mistake :).

    • Nice vid 😂. I think of it as I am buying from the people they wholesale to. Ultimately they still profit

    • Cheapness is not a sense 😂. I know it has no relation to the video, but you know what im talking about lol

  • If they have a 7 days no questions asked refund policy, then yes you are entitled to a refund within 7 days.

  • +13

    Am I Entitled

    Yes

  • -4

    Entitled - Not Sure
    Eligible - Definitely

Do not accept delivery of the package. Then it will go back to the stockist at their own expense

    • True.

I accept paying for the delivery. I just want to return the product so I can buy 2 for the price of 1.

  • +1

The most ambiguous thing is that there policy says (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12032933/redir)

We offer a full money-back guarantee for all purchases made on our website. If you are not satisfied with the product that you have purchased from us, you can get your money back no questions asked. You are eligible for a full reimbursement within 7 calendar days of your purchase .

So if someone gets there item delivered on the 8th day from purchase, they aren't entitled to it?

It should be from day you received the item.

Also if there is a way (aka no authority to leave on package), then you can refuse to take item, you can do that too, (like e.g. not collecting item from Post office/ collection centre etc. Item goes back to sender)

On the worst case scenario you can also complain to your bank for a chargeback (assuming you payed the business by a Credit/Debit card issued by your bank). but if you bought item by Paypal its much easier to file a case from them too.

    • That’s what I’m worried about too. If it arrives today, it would be 6 days from placement of order so I would have only tomorrow to take it back.

      Thanks for the tips.

      • Your bank is your best friend most times, keep a good relationship with them, they will take care of your funds.

  • This is what they replied:

While we do advise our stockist of our recommend retail price on items

Did you buy it from the same company that you are asking for a refund?

    • Yes. Now I am trying to purchase it from a shop they wholesale to

  • +1

What is the item and how much are you talking? $30 and you found it for $15 or $600 and you found it for $300

    • It’s drinking chocolate powder. Price was $80 found it for $40 elsewhere

      • In that case I would suck it up and move on

        • -1

$40 is a lot of money mate

  • Uh, by the time you go through this charade, isn't it possible the cheaper item will have sold out or been repriced?

If not, what is the refund/change of mind policy from Outlet #2, Outlet #3, Outlet #4…

Why not use a Credit Card that allows for price-drops?

For a Food item. what is the use by/best before dates?
Maybe cheaper because of clearance or near/past date?

    • use a Credit Card that allows for price-drops?

Not really any good one there Right now for new people as far as I know

  • +2

Hey OP. I've read their (copy-paste/template) refund policy and, as much as I enjoy advocating for consumer rights, I don't think you're being reasonable here expecting a refund.

My read of their policy? They want you to be happy with the product and the policy trigger point is "…If you are not satisfied with the product…". You don't even have the product in hand, let alone have tried it. If, having used the product, you found that you didn't like it, didn't think it represented value for money etc then holding then you'd be well within your rights to hold them to their policy.

They fulfilled your order in good faith at the advertised price and (presumably) store service level. In hindsight, a better approach might have been to drop them a line when you found a better deal and asked them if they'd consider a store credit, partial refund etc. I don't see this as a policy designed to cover circumstances of buyers' regret.

My 2.2 cents worth (incl GST)

    • +1

I like the way you have added GST.
(I dislike GST, but it is a nice touch in case of Audit). lol

      • +1

        🤣

Or you could keep the original packet and buy the second discount product. Then both packets will be amortised to $60 each so you're ahead.

    • Or sell Order #1 for a quick profit on Gumtree. lol
      Powder, 1kg Bags, Cash. lol

  • Just make sure your not returning it due to spite.

  • The answer is that you are not satisfied with the product!
