On sale is another Aqara Zigbee smart home sensor like the Window/Door Sensor posted a few days ago.

This sensor is designed to detect water and once detected it can be configured to do tasks like sending a notification to your device or an alarm to your Xiaomi Zigbee gateway. The sensor is IP67 waterproof rated and has a replaceable button battery with 2 years of battery life.

An example of how this sensor could be useful is placing it behind your washing machine. When a leak is detected the sensor can send to an alert to notify that it's detected water.

It requires the use of a Zigbee hub to function and it's compatible with many brands including Aqara, Xiaomi, Conbee and more. The sensors also support Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa and Home Assistant when paired with a Zigbee hub.

  • Will this device detect a leak from a trickle of water passing it or will it have to be sitting in a shallow pool of water in order for it to activate the alert?

    • +2

It needs to be sitting in water 0.5mm deep for it to detect. The round design will mean that a trickle of water ontop would flow underneath and trigger it.

    • +4

You can also put the sensor in a large shallow container, and put the container under the leak points like hot water system fittings. The container will help concentrate the water under the sensors instead of the leak missing it and running off in a different direction.

  • I'm waiting for Xiaomi to introduce toilet leak sensor.

    • +1

You can put this unit behind a toilet.

  • Looks like a regular price on AliX

Fun fact - you can make the "detection area" larger by connecting some bare wires to the detection screws. For me I used it to keep the device out of constant water but used just bare ended wires to detect when shower is on (to turn on exhaust fan).

    • Genius idea with the fan

  • Could you use it to detect the absence of water?

    • It's not going to send you alerts if no water is detected 😉

      • In home assistant could potentially have something trigger when it stops being on?

        • Potentially. You could try asking around the Home Assistant forums if anyone knows.

          • @Clear: I love automating passive aggressive reminders so the kettle would be rigged with this so fast.

            • @MagnamoniousRex: It just appears as a binary sensor in Home Assistant so you could create an automation to trigger when it turns off for a period of time (so that it didn’t just go off when you were pouring the jug). You would need to hook wires up to the sensor and mount the sensor on an insulated part of the kettle (like the handle) so it didn’t get cooked.

I could see this being useful for a smart kettle that you could turn on remotely, so you always know there is sufficient water in there.
