Fun fact: This pesto isn't vegetarian as it has the original Italian parmesan that contains rennet - curdled milk from inside calf stomachs.

Might have to change your name to cheeseguy! Insightful!

      • Even a funnier fact that the description is a straight lie:

made with 100% italian basil and real italian cheese (pecorino romano and grana padano cheese). suitable for vegetarian and gluten free users

Those hard cheeses by law contain animal rennet.

A lot of vegetarians eat cheese.

Not suitable for vegans, I'll give y that.

          • @0jay: It's not about what you're giving.

Lots of cheeses are not vegetarian, and this pesto has two of them for 100%. It's just straight from the ingredient lists.

The fact that some of your pizzas, pastas or pestos are described as V in menus or by sellers is due to sheer ignorance - honest or pretended.

    • I was under the assumption that vegetarians only don't eat the flesh of animals, but other animal products are ok like milk and eggs. Otherwise, wouldn't they just be vegan?

      • Forgive the lack of precision.

The rennet mostly comes from dead calves' stomachs - that's the most cost-effective way.

Vegans don't eat animal products at all. Vegetarians don't eat products that directly require an animal to be killed; in the industrial reality, animals suffer and have to be killed to obtain vegetarian products - talking eg. male calves, chicks etc. that are being terminated due to being "useless". So yeah, being vegetarian out of sympathy to animals too often doesn't make any sense.

        • Can you say for sure it's animal rennet or chymosin rennet?

@TEER3X: Grana padano and parmigiano reggiano by European consumer law, just like many other cheeses in Europe, have to be made the traditional way that uses strictly animal rennet.

Australian parmesans often contain non-animal rennet. But this pesto here is (proudly) Italian.

@pizzaguy: Learned something new. Thank you.

      • Generally, vegetarian = death not involved in the process, but 'no flesh' is a pretty straightforward rule of thumb without having to remember random, weird ingredients.

Lots of presumably-vegetarian foods inconspicuously contain ingredients that cross that line. Rennet (found in some cheeses) and gelatine (often found in ice cream and gummy lollies) being 2 of the most common.

        • Rule of thumb for cheeses being: If it's European, it's not vegetarian.

But don't vegetables die as well once they are pulled from the ground?

          • +1

@iampoor: I can't imagine needing attention enough to say lines as overused and dumb as that.

    • Thanks mate, I look for non-animal rennet but trusted the suitable for vegetarians tag and have been buying this. That's pretty upsetting TBH.
