I've noticed this a lot since chocolate became a regular part of the menu, a lot of times I order a chocolate sundae or McFlurry I end up getting a vanilla one instead because the chocolate machine is getting cleaned. Chocolate soft serve is at least ten times better than vanilla so this really grinds my gears.
McDonald's Chocolate Soft Serve Machine Always Being Cleaned

I heard a story that apparently theres some monopoly behind the company that loans the machines. Apparently only qualified technicians can fix them and they break down super often so that the company gets lots of $$$. Have no idea if true though, but agreed it always seems to be broken.
Food Theory on YouTube says that the people who own McDonald's shares also tend to own shares in the company that makes the machines for McDonald's, so making McDonald's totally reliant on the ice cream machine company for all maintenance gives the shareholders more money overall.
Chocolate soft serve became a regular thing? Since when?
My local maccas stopped serving it months ago, despite it being constantly sold out every time I went through drive-thru.
One near me was doing it 20 years ago, it was owned by a corrupt politician. The one nearest to me has been doing it for years, but I'm sure I saw an ad saying it's available everywhere now.
mcbroken
that website tracks if machines are broken similar to the US site. Its a start but won't guarantee chocolate flavour is working.
I've never seen a chocolate soft-serve in my life. Could be due to serving time on the penal colony of Tasmania for the last decade or so…
At least they're cleaning if, they're a petri dish waiting to Happen.
Rumour has it, it’s where Covid started
That was the fruit bat soft serve, wasn’t very popular
Chocolate soft serve? Where?
Yes I didn't know this existed!
Merged from McDonald's Locations That Serve Chocolate Soft Serve in Sydney West?
Hi all,
After seeing AustriaBargain posting about Soft Serve Machines breaking down, I was reminded about the existence of Chocolate Soft Serves as I've never been in a Maccas that has that on the menu item.
Anyone know any Maccas in Sydney West that serve it? Wish there was a list that had known locations.
Hopefully I can satisfy my urge to try it out.
Maybe try changing locations in the app to those around you and see if it shows up. Certainly no chocolate at my local.
💩
Hornsby advertised it hard but I went earlier this year and no luck. I missed out on the double choc fudge sundae :(
Cremorne had it at one stage too.As far as I know Gladesville still has it though it's been a couple months since I've been. Depending on the staff member it can be tall or sad. I'd say flavour is similar to yogo choc yoghurt but as a soft serve.
I found also that playing around with app to find choc soft serve is unreliable.
Edit: according to this reddit post it was possibly at Mt Druitt, Emerton and Plumpton. I'd suggest giving the stores a call and report back.
https://old.reddit.com/r/sydney/comments/phpwcp/found_a_macc…It was at Waitara. I don't recall Westfield Hornsby ever having it.
Not Westfield but the standalone maccas outside had pretty basic looking printouts.

@Caped Baldy: Oh, don't remind me. My wife used to get so excited seeing that particular sign and then the 16 year old on the speaker would be like 'Nah, run out'.
Didn’t know chocolate soft serve was a thing at maccas. The only time I’ve encountered it at maccas was in Manly (Sydney) in the 90s, never seen it since. It was really nice.
I've seen the machines in the past at multiple NSW Club locations buffets .
I'm not sure there anything special about them though unless Maccas has a magic formula .those usually have half half
thats where the magic starts
Stop eating so much sugar is it sooo bad for you.
It's tasty though.
It's only tasty because you are addicted to sugar. It's way too sweet if you aren't addicted already.
Sugar messes with your brain and body in more than just taste.
could be that McDonald's went from African sourced beans to Asian sourcced beans and is contributing?
It was trialed last year and was available on pretty much all machines as an option. At trial locations they'd have it briefly show on the drive thru displays.
Only heard yesterday that the kids absolutely hate cleaning the ice cream machines as is a royal PITA. Thus the whole team defaults to allowing (encouraging?) informing customers that 'we've run out' or 'the machine is broken/maintenance' is as much as accepted policy/procedure.
When I worked at McDonald's it was the counter crew who take care of all things involving the ice cream machine, usually girls who struggled to lift the big bag of syrup into the top of the machine.
The more I hear about it the more I feel for these kids. They really have to hop when it's buzzing in a Maccas' let alone deal with what sounds not only like a bitch of a machine but keeping up with their given jobs. Having said that I'm pretty sure I was somewhat 'trained' out of even asking for ice cream years ago as 9/10 times 'the machine was out of order' or 'we ran out'. Shame though, for the few I had they were quite nice IMO.
Maybe Maccas would do better to revamp and have a 'guaranteed ice cream' campaign after removing and replacing these (very) troublesome machines. Lets face it, most might be enticed by getting an ice cream but more often than not they'd end up ordering food as well. In theory, said Share Holders could have a decent win as well.
