Maccas Now Have Chocolate Soft Serve at Select Locations

Just a PSA for all the ice cream lovers out there. McDonald's have silently launched Chocolate soft serve in select locations across NSW, QLD and SA. Back in May it was available in select WA and TAS stores. The word on the streets is that if it's successful then it'll be rolled out nationally later in the year.

It's not clear which stores have it, but perhaps some Maccas employees here could enlighten us?

If you use the kiosks in store, go to the soft serve and click 'Customise Ingredients'. It'll give you the option of choosing Vanilla, Chocolate or Chocolate and Vanilla. This option should show on all kiosks nationwide and you'll find out if it works when they hand you the ice cream.

  • How much are soft serves now? I remember them being $0.15 a long time ago.

    • +4

Well I’m in my thirties and last I rmb, early 2000s was already over 50c..

      • +2

I vaguely recall ads saying that they'd keep the prices at 30c

        • Possibly, the early 20s were nearly 20 years ago, and my memory these days of even last week are hazy at best. I also haven’t had a soft serve cone in decades… only 2x large choc sundaes as chasers to my large Big Mac meal can crush my cravings.

        • Used to be a massive banner at my local store for that price.

    • +3

      75c plain
      $1 with flake

+70c for M&Ms or Oreo topping
      +50c for Hot fudge/caramel/strawberry topping

No option for chocolate soft serve on the app.

High chance of ice cream machine not working in peak summer.

Yeah doesn't show on app. Just on the kiosks in store.

I've never ever had an ice cream machine not work anywhere around the country for me.

    • I think your mind is playing tricks on you.
They were introduced at (I think) either 70c or $1 when a sundae was about $2, but then were a long term promotion at 30c for years and years, and that price point was the lowest they ever sold for. They then put them up to 50c for a long time in 2014. (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2815374/McDonalds-D…).
I'll stand corrected if there was a 15c promo in 2001 when I lived overseas, but they weren't on the menu back in the days when 15c might have been a price.

The 30c loss leader cone was definitely the usual in the 2000s as I used to buy one for my kids when they were little when we were on a long drive, and used to be quietly annoyed that me and the kids were getting the 30c bargain while my spouse wanted a $3 something McFlurry. You could get 10 cones for that!!!

My parents used to get the sundaes and give me a few scoops in a lid. The topping always made it better than a soft serve. C

  • Hope it's as good as it was a long long time ago when some Sydney locations had choc soft serve ice cream.

    • From what I recall it seemed just as good.

  • Maybe just fill the "thickshake" cup up with this instead to have something more than a milkshake

    • really. I find maccas thickshakes are thick.
Although HJ chocolate thick shake tastes much better imo

      • We must have different ideas on what a thickshake is ;)

        • haha
I think everyone has there ideal thickness :P

But is the ice cream machine working?

    • rarely in summer

    • -1

Always works for me. Hungry Jack's have it sometimes but their machines run so cold the soft serve is solid.

Perhaps it's an issue in the city CBD stores?

Ah Fremantle store in WA had this yeeeeears ago. Was the only one which did at the time, was strange

  • Thanks for sharing!

Any recommendations clear? (On its own or with vanilla and +/- any toppings? I've never had a soft serve with toppings I must say. Seems weird to spend more on toppings than the ice cream itself!)
Can you get it as a sundae?

    • Honestly if they did a soft serve choc top that would be amazing.

Just go straight chocolate or half and half. Forget the toppings. Though a flake is always nice.

      • Oh man. choc top would be awesome.

They use to have the chocolate waffle cones which you they would add sauce too. The good maccas people would cover the inside of the waffle cone with choc sauce before adding soft serve. Was amazingly delicious. Sad its not available any more.

Anyways whilst I'm reminiscing/whinging custard pies are not available any more. (And I didn't get my fair share due to lock down :( )

        • I forgot the waffles. Get the Reece cones as most of the bottom is solid chocolate with a good amount of peanut butter in the middle. Better than the classics.

Custard pies were the best. Raspberry too. What we need is Pineapple pies. I had them all the time in Thailand.

          • @Clear: Ill check it out.
Custard is my favourite so far. Although raspberry is would be second. Banana was very average!

Pineapple sounds interesting. I remember them having tropical pie ages ago but cant remember if it was any good.

  • Malaysia always had the chocolate, wonder why they disnt have them here. Favourite was the twist. Do they do that here?

    • Twists are the best. You can get close by having half and half here but no where near the same.

      • Damn. Yeah I love the twists! Now they've brought out new flavours like strawberry and seasonal flavours but it's more of a 'lining'. Why does Australia always gotta be so behind 😭

        • What we need is a Dairy Queen. Move aside Wendy's.

  • Singapore McD has matcha flavour

  • Chocolate mccone at circular key, ferry to manly, choc cone in manly, ferry back. On a travel card. Bargain way to experience Harbour.
Haven't done it since they stopped the choc.

  • For those in Victoria, they have it at the Rowville store. So gooodddd. Especially served in a lid with Oreos on top. I haven't had it for several years. Such a struggle to find a store. Richlands store in Queensland used to have it as well. Haven't been for several years so can't confirm if they still do.
