Termite Risk of a Greenhouse

Hey guys
Built a greenhouse- mostly wood frame -not treated. Basically sits against the back wall of the house. Half of it is over concrete slab (thats also against the wall) and the other half is over soil but on top of few pavers.

Attached is a rough paint diagram looking side on. Brown is just where the soil is located.

Was hoping to see if anyone would think this is mmuch of a termite risk?- I thought given it is away from soil and propped up on concrete slab/paver risk is less?

Much appreciated! just getting bit worried.

doesn't matter if it is away from soil and propped up on concrete slab/paver .

that just means you'll be able to see the termite mud paths easier (that's what those metal termite caps are for - they force the termites to build over the edge of the cap so that they are visible) .

best thing you can do is buy some Bifenthrin and do as per this video

or read this great ozbargain post.

    • Oh would prefer non toxic option..I heard the physical barriers can be used?

      • physical barriers - these just make any termite activity more obvious. as in easier to see. and then subsequently treat. nothing worse than not knowing you have termites.

Fipronil is also a reasonable product.

anything you use for termites (that is effective) will have some level of toxicity.

  • What wood did you use?

    • Some where like light green painted wood..prob treated I'd say. But I cut sides and others were untreated wood

What did the council say when they approved your development plans.

    • dont need approval in nsw

  • the wood you need is the red tinted wood. Green is just standard treated. Under our house got termites it was closed in cheaply using pine, nest was up on against hardwood didnt even touch it but god dam they used the pine as a freeway.

2 weeks they got into 2 more door frames.

Had place treated removed 1/3 of all lower drywall bottom removed bottom pine removed and all skirting replaced used that red t4 i think its called pine used. Had termite guy come back before resheeting and drown everything (he lives in my street so previous job he just mixed up extra)

they just liked to use the bottom i presume it was colder there was zero damage 1ft up.

Termite work to house with warranty 2-3k damage 2-3k but could of been much worse if they got into structal walls.

Apparently there are diffferent termite types ones when you knock on the wall and here a clicking sound are "good" they only eat softwood. Others will eat hardwood.

you can also get termite bait boxes (add some of there fav wood) inspect it if you see termites add posoin

  • If that diagram is to scale, you likely need a building permit

Maybe the house is real small?

        Maybe it's a house for ants…

    • Nah it isn't..lol

  • Your best bet would be to place it away from the house. Putting a greenhouse there you are likely increasing the moisture in the ground which increases termite risk and then you are probably covering up your ability to actually see termites enter the house.

Also if you do increase the moisture of the soil on one side of the house only and your house is on a reactive (eg. clay) soil, do not be surprised if new cracks start appearing in the house due to uneven expansion and contraction of the soil.
