ALDI Night Vision Binoculars $169 in-Store @ ALDI Special Buys

2172

Edit 3/4 - In scenes reminiscent of pre-Covid ski clothing sales, there were massive lines at the local store this morning. Anticipation was high and everyone was buzzing about how some faux military hardware being sold in a supermarket could attract almost 200 votes on OzBargain. 5 minutes later, the huge crowd was walking out satisfied with their packs of 3 ply Quilton toilet paper, safe in the knowledge they could now safely take a dump at home

If you thought fractured global supply chains meant Aldi could no longer find surplus weird shi stuff to sell, you were wrong. With tensions heightened around the world, Aldi is adding fuel to the fire and has declared war on overpriced night vision googles. Perfect for mowing the lawn at night or tracking bogies on your six.

I remember back in the day, if you wanted affordable night-vision goggles, you bought ex-soviet military surplus from eBay. (back when eBay was primarily an auction site for used goods)
Now the Russians seem unable to move by night.

    • Russian military bought back all the surplus for use in Ukraine.

      • still got mine!

Nice find. With Aldi you do get the easier return though. And with stuff like this, I like to keep my options open as the performance is likely to be quite underwhelming.

I upvoted you. Buying weird shit for no reason apart from it being on sale is the ozbargain way.

  • -1

Can we just donate for them to send these to ukraine?

    • -2

I would actually do that, but logistics of getting it there right…..

      • +6

These are glorified toys that broadcast their position with an ir light that whilst invisible to the naked eye is highly visible to other nv devices, security cameras and even some modified phones.
At best you might get a barely trained kid killed, at worst…

        • +5

          even some modified phones.

Every one of the cheap Android phones I've ever owned (about five different models) could see infrared without any modification.

Try it and see! Turn on the camera app, point your TV remote at the camera lens, and push buttons on the remote. If you see the IR LED at the front of your TV remote lighting up, your phone's camera can see infrared.

In my household, the only phone that didn't work is an iPhone.

          • @Russ: Most of the cheap ones I’ve seen still had an ir filter but it was just not good so allowed a lot of light through, if you remove the filter from those cheap cameras the colours will go weird for day use but the ir will appear even brighter again.

          • +1

@Russ: That's how I usually test a TV remote or any other remote that does not have a light on it. Just point the remote to your mobile's camera to see if it actually emits anything or whether it's broken or batteries are flat.

  • Can someone PM me when these are reduced to $29?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Finally! My wife can read instagram in bed without the light from her phone keeping me awake.

Up vote for awesome write up.

So I've got a pair of these and an ex-Russian Gen I NV scope.

They work very differently. The NV scope (military style tech) amplifies light, and can see in relatively dark areas without IR illumination. They also have an IR illuminator which is blinding despite it's size.

These are basically a video camera with the IR filter removed. Without IR illumination it can't see much at night. But the IR spotlight on the front is really a powerful IR torch, which lights up the scene so the camera can see. You can't see the IR light, but the camera can.

So there are differences. Some animals get spooked by the IR light. Anyone else with IR gear will see you like a lighthouse. Which makes it useless for fighting the Russians.

Having said that, they really are awesome for night time activities like camping, fishing and dogging.

Appreciate the zinger at the end ;)

      • I second that, ha ha ha ha

    • +1

That's good - I often take Einstein for walks at night so it would help to see where he and I are going.

    • Do you know the model of your presumably Soviet scope? a.k.a a 1pn34? I have a old vehicle PNV-57 for drivers and a binocular version of the PNV-57E….. But the standard PNV-57 is useless without an IR illumination, but the later is great for night activities like you said…..

Will ALDI get sniper rifle or RPG stock soon too?

    • +1

They are German, so probably will be Panzerfaust 3 instead of RPG…

  • Sure the Amazon version is exactly the same? Seems like it is cheaper from there.. $159.98 at the time of this writing..

6x AA batteries is a bit suss… hmmm..

  • NGL, my dad would have loved something like this back in the old days.

  • I guess these are active infrared ones. Do they glow red in the dark?

Cheaper to buy a case of beer

    Want

I just haven't worked out what for yet…

  • +1

These look to be the same ones they've had for the last 3-4 years. They're pretty bad. Ok for a kid's toy though.

  • How are these for fishing and spying through glass windows?

    • Terrible for both. IR goggles need to project infrared light onto your target, and then it needs to reflect back to the optics you looking through.

Glass and water prevents that from happening.

  • +1

Only checked this product out for the inevitable great comments. Was not disappointed. :)

  • what the Hell is Aldi doing with night vision goggles? can I get a 50 cal as well? I am asking for a friend….

    • Kevlar vests are next.

This is a special buy operation. Nothing to see here.

  • Now to 3D print a head mount….

  • Must come with Predator mode.

    • If it bleeds. We can kill it.

  • So why do we need this?

    • For cosplaying seal team 6.

      • Is it true, every SEAL claimed to be the one that killed Osabama?

        • -1

They are not really going to name the exact person shot the fatal shot. The whole team will claim it though. As they work as one.

    • Alien hunting.

  • Are there any samples, photos or videos, of what actually "sees"?

    Night vision could be anything.
From amazing (military grade) to a black nothing … which one is?

  • It'll help me finding my cat at night trying to hide in the bush.

Thanks OP! My sister grabbed one in Brisbane for me. Glad I didn't miss it this year

  • Absolutely garbage.
    Don't waste your money.

Well done to everyone in this thread - original deal has been updated with a sitrep from the frontline

  • Has anyone seen fairies flying in their garden using these night vision binoculars?

    • +2

No, you'll want LSD for that.

  • +1

Excellent for watching neighbours neighbourhood watch.

    • Just remember though:

      a) Most of these devices still emit a visible red light in the IR spectrum (so not "stealth")
      b) IR does not go through windows (if you want to spot thieves in the act, you'll need to be out there with them)
      c) You'll probably use these once or twice then throw them in the cupboard, as a torch is better in nearly every other circumstance.

If you are serious, and want decent night vision… spend a little extra and get this:
      https://www.ozscopes.com.au/bushnell-equinox-z-6x50-digital-…

I use these when camping and you get a whole new perspective on wildlife nature spotting at night.
Nice big 50mm lens to suck in all that light, and also has 6x optical zoom (plenty for the range you'll use them in). The digital zoom is 'so-so', like in any product with digital zoom (which is next to useless for detailed imagery).

      • 2D green b00bies.
