How’s the mic on the Xbox? And do you need an adapter or anything else to connect?
Just so people know it is only compatible with a PS5 if you buy an additional adapter which costs around $40-70 extra.
This is incorrect. Just connect your optical cable from the base station to your tv instead of the PS5 and then there's a setting on your tv you need to change as well as the audio output on the PS5.
Barroda is correct. This is how im using it
Only if your TV has optical out. Mine does not.
If your tv has optical, so my statement is still correct.
I do it this way for Xbox and PS5 (and everything) compatibility
partially incorrect,
you still able to connect PS5 via USB without Audio/HDMI splitter, mic and audio is working fine. The downside with this, game voice balance won't work.
These haven't been worth it for years. Audeze Penrose if you want audio quality in that price bracket (just ensure you have decent LoS on the receiver), otherwise step down to the $120-$160 range for good wireless headsets when they're on sale.
If neither alternate option is palatable, sit back and wait for the next generation of Bluetooth.
Audeze Penrose is a two channel headset, this is a multichannel reciever that mixes surround sound into virtual surround and a headset.
It's pointless for PC, given that you can use more or less any virtual surround algorithm by using Equalizer APO.
I am unsure of the audio situation on PS5. However it's my impression (large grain of salt required) that PS5 has native virtual surround, without headset restriction like the PS4, which would again render this pointless.
PS4 is where it's actually useful since PS4 only does virtual surround to Sony headsets. Therefore if you want virtual surround you must have an external receiver like this.
Both current consoles and PCs comes with software based DSP for this purpose. Dolby's solutions tend to muddy the bass.
The Astro solution remains a DSP one, it's just on a chip in the hardware, but there's nothing useful or good about that.
I don't think that DSP solution is worth the audio quality (and tonal) trade off, even on a PS4.
While these were designed for the PS4, I couldn't recommend these headphones more for PS5 play. Bought them for my PS5 despite conflicting reports of their compatibility - Dolby DTS 7.1 Surround works flawlessly and is better than the Pulse3D codec in my opinion. Voice chat quality was consistently the clearest among my lobbies according to friends, and config options are excellent.
If your TV has an audio optional out, don't bother buying the HDMI adapter - just do the following:
- From Headset base the USB should be plugged into the PS5.
- Optical cable from Optical IN on base to Optical OUT on TV.
- Settings on TV should be Optical OUT. Usually under Sound.
- PS5 settings in Sound. Select Bitstream Dolby or DTS
- 'Chat Audio only' for Dolby DTS 7.1 or 'All Audio' if you want the 3D Audio to work. The latter will sound much quieter.
- Make sure Output Device setting says USB then your headset.
Only major downside is Astro still haven't worked out how to get the Base Station to charge headphones consistently when plugged into the PS5 USB port and when the console is in Rest mode. You don't need the base station to charge the headphones though, they can be directly charged by USB-Micro cable.
Dolby DTS 7.1 Surround works flawlessly and is better than the Pulse3D codec
The dirty secret about virtual surround algorithms is that they depend on the shape of the users ear.
This means that specific algorithms work better and worse for different individuals. When users report that virtual surround doesn't work they're correct for that specific algorithm. You can usually find something that works if you can change algorithms like with Equalizer APO but on devices with single algorithms you can just be unlucky.
The thing with the A50s is that you can customise the dynamic range and equaliser settings to your liking, unlike the Pulse 3D headphones.
Personally for me the fit of the A50s is larger set and cups my big ears perfectly, the Pulse headphones on the other hand are way too small and have little to no thermal venting at all, overheating very quickly.
Cheers OP got one
Awesome headset, picked up the Xbox version second hand and love it!
