Advice for Investing in Index Fund?

Hi, I want to invest some savings into an index fund, to hopefully earn a decent return on it. Is now a generally safe time to do it?
Im looking for a rundown on how to do it, the best site/app to do it in, and which funds are best etc.
Thanks!

    OP, do you like fees?

    which funds are best

Depends on what market or segment you want to invest in.

the best site/app to do it in,

Depends how often/regularly and how much $ you intend on investing.

With zero information, the default invest regularly in something like Vanguard's VDHG and just ignore it for a decade is some advice

    DHHF or VDHG and DCA.

Agreed. That DCA fund is very good

  • Is now a generally safe time to do it?

It isn't timing the market but time in the market.

    Learn here:

Your questions lack specifics so it's hard to give an answer.

Personally, I own IVV (S&P500), VESG (fo access to google, facebook and other tech stocks), VAP (for property exposure), VTS (because I didn't really know what I was buying) and VAE (asian markets). Results have varied from treading water to really good. My main reason for purchase was to diversify my portfolio away from Australian financial institutions.

I'd suggest you look at the underlying investments to see if you are happy where your money is going.

As for an investment portal, I think Stake is about the cheapest Chess sponsored broker at the moment. It's $3/trade.

Everything you need to know from a "I have no clue" datum can be found on YT or other online sources. Everytime you don't know, just search it. Make sure it is relevant to Australia.

if you investing in Index then it usually via ETFs, you can learn with video from here, you can invest in local index or international index
    https://www.betashares.com.au/education/video-library/

It usually a good idea to have a goal what you want to do with your money that way you can adopt a strategy for that goal

my kids started in ETFs as soon as they turn 18 with the goal of buying their first property, one about to signed a contract to exchange on a property from a combination of cash
and shares for a 25% deposit

there is no best fund or best way or best strategy, it comes down to what is best for you in term of goal, life style and risk appetite and that is different from person to person. good luck

    • Why does my goal matter? All I want to do is store the money somehwre that makes more than the bank interest. like 5% maybe. So I guess somewhat on the lower end of risk.

I just want some recommendations on what sites/apps are good for managing it? Like, I use SwyftX for crypto trading, so what is a good equivalent for shares/index funds? I just want somewhere a bit more profitable to store my savings. The returns dont need to be massive, especially to be better than the bank.

    • You do understand risk v reward right?

Your investing in crypto, so understand that's much riskier than a bank but can result in large percentage gains (or losses)

You shouldn't treat some random etf as a bank alternative without weighing up the market it's tracking and the risk profile (and how that risk profile aligns with your financial timeline)

so what is a good equivalent for shares/index funds

      If that's all you want
      Stake.
      End thread.

Well regarding the crypto, I understand it's high risk, and thus I haven't put much in there. Not more than I'd be willing to lose, basically.

  • DON'T.
Looks like you don't know what you are doing and trying to get near the top of the tech-dominated rally just before some central banks will pull a trigger on the rates.
You would do much better with a sector-rotation strategy at this point but I don't think you are on that level yet.
