  • I thought for a long time that JBL stuff was cheap and nasty but I got one of these recently and it's great. Charges with usb C and has a usb port to charge your phone off. Battery indicator is the line in the middle under the JBL logo

JBL is generally one of the good brands

    • I really like my Charge 4.
One thing I dont like about the Charge 5 is JBL removed the port cover. I understand that a USB-C port doesn't need a cover to be waterpoof. But the cover is great when it comes to keeping sand and dirt out.

  • I don't quite understand the title. Under what circumstances is it $153 and $170?

    • +2

170 normally on Onsport but if you have access to Studentbeans then further 10% off = $153. Sorry, I should have made this clear.

Good Post OP and great speaker.

I have this and the JBL Extreme 3 and for the price and weight/size the Charge 5 is hard to beat.

If you're after bit more bass or volume for outside, the extrem 3 is a great price too at $339.96 $60 off.

Seen these everywhere and they’re pretty good

For another (cheaper) option to consider: I was looking to purchase the JBL Charge 5 as well, but upon "researching" it, I found the Anker Soundcore Motion Plus (which is currently $110 delivered via Amazon Prime). I'm very impressed with it - I think it's the best value portable bluetooth speaker on the market and, overall, I prefer it (with Alan Ross' custom EQ) to the JBL Charge 5 (though this has better bass). Here's Alan Ross' comparison between the Motion+ and the JBL Charge 5: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOmHTwewWc8&ab_channel=AlanR…

I watched some of his videos before buying the JBL. He basically says that “Anker one is better than any other speaker in world” in all of his videos.
Also, you can’t compare two speakers based on videos, you have to listen to them live. These review videos do extreme injustice to the actual sound.
You won’t be disappointed with either but when you listen to them live, you will find out which one is more suited to your music needs. I personally liked the Sony xb33 over JBL charge 4(5 wasn’t working) when I was testing them but I couldn’t justify the $70 something premium. But when I opened my Charge 5 & tested them, they didn’t disappoint.

Additionally, JBL is a bigger brand so you can get warranty coverage overseas in most countries.

Sure … but Alan Ross' review isn't the only review out there comparing the two. There are more on YouTube and everyone seems to say the same thing - the Motion+ is the better value speaker and their pick overall, with the JBL Charge 5 "only" having better bass. I also only singled out Alan Ross' review because other OzBargainers recommended his custom EQ for the Motion+ - and it really does make the sound better than its stock sound. I was going to purchase the JBL for its "brand name" too, but after hearing the two on multiple reviews - plus the actual opinions of those reviewers on what they're hearing "in person" - the Motion+ was the winner. I offered my two cents because I'd hate to have purchased the JBL for a higher price for inferior (imo) sound - thought others might benefit and have a look at others' reviews first before making their own choice. :)

        • Sound is subjective(a friend didn’t like the ATH m50 at all & returned it the same day) that’s why I said people should judge them by listening live. But if that can’t be done then definitely all you have is reviews & recommendations. You can’t go wrong with either, one could be better depending on the music one listens to.

          • @Wrongguy: I also don't like the ATH m50. Perhaps it is a headphone designed for studio recording or some neutral form of listening, but in terms of the enjoyment factor, you get very little excitement from the ATH M50. I heard it from a friend's one. I would really hate to have spent my own money on it.

            • @rizza: Exactly my point, there is probably no reviewer in this world who would have given these headphones less than 8 out of 10. Same can be said for speakers that reviewers love but may not be as exciting. It is best to test an item personally if possible so you know what you are getting, you may change your mind & get something that you love rather than something that all the experts & reviewers rave about.

For those interested the charge 5 now has an equaliser option, some of the reviews marked it down because it didn't have one. I've had one for 6 months and I can't fault it.

Yeah this was a welcome addition to the latest firmware update! I feel like with that update the default is now lower in bass? Or maybe I'm imagining it… either way, good to be able to customise it.

      • You may be correct, did not notice myself. But at least it can be boosted by two steps ( safely without adding

too much distortion and/or damaging speaker in the process ).

  • Shown "not available" now, unfortunately
