That would require the hosts/organisers to get working with children clearance.

          • @xoom: Even if they're directly supervised?

            • +3

@Arigato: It changes nothing. If you work with children or have children under you care. This is not negotiable. Its a huge liability if anything happens to any minors in such a setting or environment.

              • @xoom: So staff at fortress in the city would all have this?

                • @Arigato: Ask them. If they don't they can be reported as thats a breach.

                  • -4

@xoom: Please don't get into these conversations if you don't actually know what you're talking about.

                    • +1

@Arigato: It's the internet forum.. basically no one knows what they're talking about. Those that do won't be bothered nswering

                      • @funnysht: True, but it's a shame when braindead people vote up moronic statements

            • +5

@Arigato: We've looked into this before and there are a few things that make it difficult.

We don't want to need to monitor what games people are playing, what's on their screen, what language they are using, etc. We want people to feel comfortable and have the chance to just come and play games.

We could theoretically have U18s there but they'd need to be actively supervised by their legal guardian at all times, otherwise we do run into issues with WWCCs and public liability insurance, etc. We'd be willing to work with people on this on a case by case basis, but it would have to be with the clear understanding that the event organisers take zero responsibility and that we can't guarantee they won't be exposed to mature content on someone else's screen.

    No Warzone?

  • -3

If you’re asking for vaccination certificates let’s go full health requirements and ask that everyone showers and puts on deodorant beforehand

    • +7

What? And ruin the authentic LAN experience? 😂

    • -1

Don't forget the fourth booster requirement or someone might catch a mild cold.

  • Is there a free play area? Not really interested in tournaments

    • Yeah for sure. There'll be heaps of just 'for fun games' as well as board games, racing simulators, VR headsets, Nintendo Switches, etc.

There'll be heaps to do if you don't want to join in tournaments.

    • Yes, the whole BYO PC area is free play (idk about the console areas but i assume so), you don't even need to join any tournaments

Edit: didn't refresh for page for so long so didn't know he already answered

    cries in qld

    • Speaking without bias. It's 100% worth flying down for :P

      • Im sure theres a deal on flight from qld to vic posted here.

    • +1

      Road trip?

  • +2

Can't find your code of conduct / safety team info, could you point me in the right direction please?

    • Can you expand a bit on what you're after?

We follow the COVID-19 guidelines as set out by the state government and our venue, as such we have COVID-safety officers at the event and a COVID-safe marshal checking vaccination certificates at the door.

      • +2

Code of conduct, as in what the acceptable attendee behavior is at the event eg something like this: https://linux.conf.au/attend/code-of-conduct/

Your event looks rad, but I'm bi and I'm trying to work out if
        - Is it an event that my partner and I would feel safe at
        - Would I have to put up with slurs and rape jokes all weekend (maybe I'm jaded from playing too much DOTA)

        • +2

          Totally understandable.

We don't have a behavioural code of conduct available. However everyone that enters signs a form agreeing to the terms and conditions (which include no bullying harassment).

Ultimately we won't tolerate any sort of abuse, bullying or harassment and anyone that violates that would be immediately removed from the event.

I totally understand the concern from both this being a LAN event and at a church. But The Big LAN is an inclusive event that aims to create a fun and safe environment for all attendees regardless of race, gender, disability, sexual identity, etc.

they are not hosting a dota tournament, so unless you want to play the LoL tourney, why bother

  • and is a drug and alcohol free event

Damn, this is the best part of the LAN party

    • -1

      Ruins it dont it?

  • How much to come and watch only

    • +3

You'd have to buy the console ticket. That's the minimum we can charge since we still provide lunch and dinner.

      • Cheers. Is there like a minimum specs or what we need to bring

        • +1

In terms of PC? As long as it has wi-fi or an ethernet port you'll be able to connect. From there it's just the game specs. A couple of the games should run on just about anything (Halo CE, Golf with your Friends. Even rocket league and CS:GO are pretty light on).

If you're bringing a console, that's fine. Halo Reach is crossplay PC and Xbox, Apex Legends should be crossplay Xbox, Pc, Playstation and Switch. I think Rocket League is crossplay compatible too.

If you don't want to bring either. You can just rock up. Some people like to bring their own controller for Smash bros but we'll have some available. We provide everything for the VR station, racing sims, and board games.

  • Damn this actually sounds like fun, pity it's in VIC

  • forwarding to mates, one last hurrah for the old clan! miss LAN's, great times

  • While I get vaccination proof being requested, why not make everyone present a negative RAT? Despite them not being super accurate, it'd give attendees a little more piece of mind as vaccination means very little in terms of getting and spreading. Not that I want to get into that debate with the keyboard warriors on here of course, lol….

    • You don't need to RAT test for concerts, festivals, theatre, sporting events etc. Why would a little grassroots LAN party need to go above and beyond? Speaking as someone who currently has covid from attending work drinks - it's out there. Everywhere. If you're vaxxed, you have less to worry about.

200 sweaty boi's, should smell nice in there!

    • +1

Industrial strength air-conditioners and ventilation. We've had literally no issues with smell.

    • Says the disco Boi….

      • The ozmorons can’t even take a joke nowdays…

  • Giving me flashbacks of going to Shafted back in the day… Good times… When did it all come to an end??

    • yeah mate the best times, slamming down Jolt colas all night. One LAN a mate of ours won a Slab of Jolt at Shafted, he ended up getting heart palpitations from drinking so many.

      • he ended up getting heart palpitations from drinking so many.

😂 Reminded me of kramer from seinfeld when he won all you can drink coffee. He was so jumpy from all the coffee he drank.

  • The inferior moba. Sigh

  • Love to see LAN's make a comeback, used to attend respawn Lan myself and always had a good time being competitive, smashing energy drinks and feeling comfortable in a enclosed BO hotbox😂

  • Any Rocket League tournaments planned?

    • +1

Yes! We'll be doing a 2v2 Rocket League tournament as one of our main comps.

      • Very tempting. Even though I'm 2000+ hours in and still a plat/dia scrub.

        • +1

Rocket league previously has been a popular, but not overly competitive tournament, so if you're experienced at all you're probably in with a good shot to win.

  • So OP do you have a way to detect hackers using aimbots etc in say Apex Legends or CS:GO ?

If you detect it, what is the punishment?

    • +1

This isn't something we've had an issue with in the past. But in the event that someone is caught cheating they would be disqualified from the current tournament and any other tournaments on the day and wouldn't receive prizes.

  • Bought 2 tickets and got them in an email, can I just show via my phone when I arrive or would you prefer if they were printed?

First time going to a lan keen to see how it goes :D

    • +1

Thanks for getting tickets. I look forward to seeing you there!

More than happy for you to just show your phone on arrival. As long as we can scan the QR code or see the ticket number there will be no issues.
