Ash Barty Retires from Tennis at 25 Rank #1 Peak of Career

Ash Barty retirement as it happened: Australian tennis star announces shock retirement via Instagram

She has made a lot of money and gets to retire on her own terms. Would have liked to see more of her. Nice to see an Australian Tennis player who is respectable role model. She wants to pursue other dreams and found it hard away from family.

I'll take four full stops for $500 thanks Alex.

  • +22

    ok levity.

This ain't twitter or facebook. You posted to wrong site.

    • +11

Who needs twitter anymore when you have Levity just posting every news story they come across…

Can’t wait to see the Ash Barty, Mr Beast Gwent match up post.

  • +13

    poor levity

    lol

I'm just trying to discuss sports

      • +2

        sport sport sport sport

      • So who is the GOAT between Ash Barty, Serena, and Venus Williams?

        • Seles Vs Barty 🤔

        • Steffi Graf

        • Serena no question, ask a hard question
There is no comparison between them Serena is a league of her own and Margaret Court

  • +15

Nice status update, shame you posted it to the Forum by accident

  • +7

the point where trolling becomes spamming

  • +17

You don't need to post every single one of your thoughts here OP

    • +3

If he doesn't write them down, did OP really have those thoughts?

      • +2

        PlexityThoughts.txt

    • Well I guess it only goes to the main page if everyone keeps commenting etc.

  • +1

Put it on Twitter where people care.

    • +2

      But… do they?

      • +2

Well, I'm sure there's a chance it would be at least more than here…

  • +8

I see cyber bullying is alive and kicking

    • +7

Sad to see OzBargain doing nothing about it.

      I enjoy the attention

    • I'm out of the loop, why are people giving this poster a hard time

@randomusername2017: So a person who just likes to post on a public forum to create discussions gets abused?

            • @Danstar: Many other people manage to post on public forums and don't attract attention. Perhaps there is a correlation between content and reaction, a common denominator perhaps?

              • +1

@randomusername2017: Do they have bad reactions? I read a few comments, nothing seems extreme or insulting anyone…

                • @Danstar: Cumulative effect I guess..seems to have attracted more fans as they progressed. Notable mentions involving loan scooters and scooter parking come to mind.
Depends on how hard you want to read between the lines as to agenda and motivation, don't think general discussion is up there though.

                  • +2

@randomusername2017: So it might just be pack mentality to pick on someone that brings up many topics (which may or may not be that interesting to them) to get a few laughs and feel superior ?

                    • -1

@Danstar: Pack? Inferring a ring leader and some degree of organisation…

It's all about internet points on both sides isn't it…

                      • +1

@randomusername2017: I don't think plexity is after points…but it seems like a lot of OzB users are after some + votes

                        • @Danstar: Undecided on the point chasing..get the feeling of attempting to establish a brand in some haphazard way.

                        • @Danstar: they dont care that cyber bullying has a negative effect on others mental health and has even led to suicide

    • -1

      HI PAM

    • +2

They need somewhere to feel superior maybe?

    • On ozbargain? Of course. It's like meangirls but not even a little amusing. Moderators ate either joining or on holidays I'm guessing and ozb ownership doesn't care because they're making moolah. Can imagine how much fun a Meetup would be.

      • I’m assuming most are keyboard warriors and would not act the way they do online.

  • +3

She's switching over to the better sport. Cricket!

    • Arnt they some players playing both WAFL and WBBL?
Ash could become a champion of 3 sports in 1 decade.

      • +1

Ellyse Perry has been in both the Cricket and Football World Cups for Australia

  • +1

I'm out of the loop, what's going on!

    • +1

No idea. I thought posting this kind of thing to the Sports forum would have been appropriate.

  • +1

Ash Barty is jumping ship before number 462 switches teams.

    • +2

That's gold Jerry, gold! Your best comment rektrading.

    • +7

Seems like she is deciding not to chase big pay cheques by retiring while she is the number 1 player in the world.

      • -5

Its not the point she has the $$$$$ and doesn't give a `^ about history .
She joined the likes of Philapous , Tomic and Kourious . Big fat cheques and don't care about history . My bad the spelling I couldn't be bothered looking it up .
All never got their potential and all had huge talent.
De minaur rally tries his guts out but the poor bugger will never ahve a decent serve .
I really though Barty had a different attitude to dudes that never reached their potential .
No more Barty Party but she has a history of returning but next one she be a granny and it doesn't count .
I thought Barty had a different attitude to the above guys but I;m wrong .

Overseas guys like Feder , Joker , Nadal have the attitude of dying to create the history ( $$$$ secondary and comes with the job ) and that is what is lacking here .

        • +11

You think they care about history after the years of pain and effort to get there? Kids like her are chucked a racket at an early age, play before and after school etc.

Totally understandable that once they hit their peak they decide they can't go any further except getting more trophies, but at a huge cost to themselves.

Such a narrow-minded view you have

        • -1

Philapous? You mean Philippoussis? And Kyrgios? I wouldn’t compare her to those deadbeats, they’re much worse.

People who are extremely gifted athletically yet toss it all away because waaaah waaaah life is too hard, flying around in business class playing tennis in front of large crowds is so hard, being idolised by hundreds or thousands of people is too hard, being given free clothes is too hard boohoo. Being given money to play sport is so hard boohoo. It’s so hard to go out on a court and hit a ball back and forth for a couple of hours for $20k. It’s just so hard cry wah boohoo fart poo pants.

Those guys need perspective. Homeless people or people struggling to pay their mortgage would swap their lives in a heartbeat with those guys even if they never reach world number 1. The funny thing is now that Tomic has actually matured past the age of 12 that he’s trying to get back into the game, but he threw away his best years lmao. He’s gonna have massive regrets eventually. There’s something in the water in this country and it’s called softness.

I do think she’s retiring very early though. But yes, Aussies are weak and short sighted in general. If China invaded we’d get destroyed so hard lol. We are the fat, lazy and lucky country of the world.

          • -1

@Ghost47: The comparison on attitude may be different but similar on what being achieved with the talent .
Those guys never really got their potential and Barty wasting it by retiring .

            • @popsiee: I definitely think she’s retiring too early. I hope she just doesn’t regret it. I wouldn’t say people have matured completely by 25 years of age.

              • +4

@Ghost47: Yeah I feel its too early but it's her choice
She doesn't owe anything to the fans, the game or history

          • @Ghost47: We are the fat, lazy and lucky country of the world.….
            What’s wrong with that?

        • +7

She’s not here to appease you or us. Her life, her choice. Mate, if I could retire @ 25 and live off any proceeds from hard work, who wouldn’t. As Ferris would say “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

          Good on her 👍

      • Yes, going out on a high.

    • you will respect her when she rolls up to your drive thru window with that 8 mil and orders her big mac supersized and also pays for your lunch.

      • I don't think shes the type to flash her money like that

  • +1

She will be fine for many years, Sam Kerr signed a 1milion dollar a year contract with Nike while making a income of 100k
Plus high level sport does wreck your body.

    • Winning a grand slam is about 3 million
She's not as marketable as Osaka who was the highest paid sportswoman previously

    • Commentating and appearances.

      • I'd like to see her as a coach and commentator like Hewitt

  • +2

    Good on her

  • +9

Some of the comments on here are just hilarious.

She's persevered through years of training/tournaments (being away from family and friends, sustained injuries, notably her hip which can have long-lasting effect) and succeeded in her field. She doesn't need to be a diehard nor owe anyone anything but simply choose to do what is right for herself and her health/well-being.

    She'll be missed.

  • +1

Hope she switches back to Cricket.

    • -3

Yeap that is the favourite for her to be a boring nobody again .
Part of a women big bash team that nobody watches or is interest in .

      • +5

perhaps SHE has an interest in it?

      • +1

If you feel so strongly about achieving greatness, do it yourself? She has broken a long drought for Australia, 41 years for a prestigious title.

    • Don't think so she cited she wanted to spend more time with family
      Pursue other dreams

  • She will sooner or later pop up on the golf tour.

    • +1

she can certainly afford the tickets….

      • She currently plays off a 3.9 handicap and lives on a golfing estate.

  • -2

Maybe she will start a seed fund for Aboriginal Startups like Serena Williams is doing for Black University Startups

  • I guess she hoped the sooner she was out of the publice eye, the less pressure, and that she wouldn't get harrassed like this guy

  • +1

Around 1PM today she is holding a press conference to explain why .

  • -2

I wonder how long before the media release the real reason for her announcement ?

    • +3

      ????
      - she running for PM (replaicing scomo?)
      - fighting in the war in ukraine?
      - talking up a golfing career?
      - is an anti vax?
      - going to fly to mars?
      - is really a hologram?

    • Sexually harassing ballboys? I'm not sure what you are getting at. She quit tennis before to play cricket locally with her friend and physical trainer, the real reason is that she is probably sick of professional tennis and wants a normal life again.

      • -2

I'm not sure what you are getting at.

I guess we might never know the real reason…

        Sexually harassing ballboys?

Do you have proof of that?

  • Don't use an AMP link. It basically means Google makes the money rather than SMH.

    • I thought Google has to give SMH money?
      It's been fixed

      • Australian law might have fixed that hole by now, not sure. Or i could be entirely wrong

        • Yeah the have to pay money per click now
Pretty sure smh only makes money through ads or subscriptions which they get both ways

    • I'd rather Google get my money than Costello

  • I felt her tennis was getting so well-honed, she was just going to get harder to beat - by anyone but herself. She’s as ‘great’ as Rafa & Roger in the graciousness stakes, but there’s only one goat, whatever you (& I) think of her opinions. 76 grand slams titles is beyond imagination, & she had to miss many US opens for lack of funds. Also, Laver actually won 2 grand slams in a row, being barred from playing in them for 6 years for having the nerve to go pro. No wonder someone invented the ‘modern era’ records!

    • Rod Laver was born in the wrong era as he couldn't play Amateur Grand Slams as a Pro
      79.7% (571-145) winrate and he wasn't a big guy at 173cm

      1 United States Jimmy Connors* 1274 283 1557 81.82% [2]
      2 Switzerland Roger Federer^ 1251 275 1526 81.98% [3]
      3 Czech Republic/United States Ivan Lendl* 1068 242 1310 81.53% [4]
      4 Spain Rafael Nadal^ 1048 210 1258 83.31% [5]
      5 Serbia and Montenegro/Serbia Novak Djokovic^ 991 200 1191 83.21% [6]
      6 Argentina Guillermo Vilas* 951 297 1248 76.2% [7]
      7 Romania Ilie Năstase* 908 334 1242 73.11% [8]
      8 United States John McEnroe* 883 198 1081 81.68% [9]
      9 United States Andre Agassi* 870 274 1144 76.05% [10]
      10 Sweden Stefan Edberg* 801 270 1071 74.79% [11]

    • Are you talking about Margaret Court? She hasn't won 76 grand slams. She's won 24 grand slam singles titles and 64 grand slams titles across singles and doubles.

  • She should have retired before the French Open to milk more weeks being the world number 1 .
Google still has her there : Who is number 1 in tennis women's?
Top 100 List of Women's Tennis Ranking 2022
    RANKING PLAYER NAME RANKING POINTS
    1 Ashleigh Barty 7582
    2 Aryna Sabalenka 6380
    3 Garbine Muguruza 5685
    4 Karolina Pliskova 5135

    • +2

Do you lose your rank or WTA Points when you retire? Djokovic is semi retired

      • She should be out with 0 pts in my opinion .
I'm not sure of their procedures .

        • +1

I think she keeps the ranking till someone passes her
