  • at this point, it feels like a lot of these AVs are snake oil (maybe banking/parental features are useful) only useful when a system is offline i guess since windows defender is extremely effective when a system is online.

I’ve used bitdefender for many years and find it quite good. It consistently rates among the best for a lot of criteria.

However the best defence is not to click stupid stuff.

I’ve got a family license and have it on all the elderly computers, and I can monitor any hits through my bitdefender central login. Trust me. The oldies need something like this over bitdefender. It blocks a lot of dodgy stuff they don’t know they’re clicking.

      • I meant to say over windows defender

  • Bitdefender is #1 and has been for ages. Windows security was rubbish but from what I've read, Microsoft has made an effort to get it up to scratch and now there isn't much difference or reason to pay for licensed AV software. I don't need to reassess the situation for a few years, as I have a multi-year 50 machine licence that I got relatively cheaply a while ago, otherwise I would be able to tell you if Windows Defender is good enough from personal experience and a little research. BTW, if you have a licence like mine, Bitdefender won't let you extend it anymore, so be careful when buying this. They advised me that I could buy a new licence but instead of adding it, I'd have to sit on it for a few years until the current one ran out and then activate the licence a number of years down the track. I'm just a bit suspicious as to whether they would honour it several years later when their licensing probably changes again.

    • Don't forget that Peter Norton invented the paragraph :)

  • I've used bitdefender before. While it does provide great protection, the load on the system is too much.

I have been using kaspersky since and will recommend that. Also even if the product is Russian, it's good so I'm using it

    • The load on system was an old issue that they worked on and resolved. Recent category reviews show it performs well in this respect and I've never had a problem. People used to laugh at me when I used to criticise Kaspersky's Russian connection but I wonder who is laughing now. I made a call ages ago to avoid this product because there was a strong probability that Putin had or could order for control of the company. I also worry about organised crime there too. The main thing with Bitdefender is to buy multiple years at a big discount if you can, as RRP is normally at the high end of its market.

Tried Bitdefender trial a few months ago and why the features are good, it uses up too much system resources when scanning even after dropping the priority

Malwarebytes is pretty good if you just need basic protection against threats with low system usage without any other major features.

Otherwise I'd recommend ESET internet security for a good balance between features and performance

  • After nearly 5 years stacked discounted BitDefender and 25 years of AV subs, I read up on Microsoft Antivirus and app store policies. I'm pulling the plug on paid AV as it's becoming a jack of all trades, master of none bundle. I'm not confident my 70yo mum wouldn't click dumb links, but no AV will stop that anyway.

If getting an AV, BitDefender has been decent. I just can't see value for money anymore

  • Waiting for cheap eset again from HT tech. My license is expiring soon.
