On sale is this Intel NUC extreme barebones mini PC that's a bit larger than your typical Intel NUC and not a bad option if you're after something in this form factor. There's a PCIe slot in this one that can fit small video cards like the RTX 3060 Mini and it has the Intel i7-9750 CPU that's still very capable despite its age.

Like other NUCs you need to supply your own storage and RAM. There's dual channel DDR4 SODIMMs, 2x M.2 NVMe/SATA SSD slots, 2x Thunderbolt 3 ports, HDMI 2.0a, Ethernet and multiple USB ports including USB 3.1 Gen2.

I wanted it so much two years ago, but now 9th gen h series cpu is so lacking the performance compared to current 12th gen, and the upgradability is a joke since you have to replace the whole compute unit which is even more expensive than the whole NUC. IMO better to get a small itx case and build your own 12th gen system.

    • Totally agree with what you said here, the upgradability with its age makes it undesireble, better off with an ITX case for future proofing.

    • Yeah I had an i5 NUC for a few years. It worked well and I eventually sold it on, but this is very niche and most likely a small ITX solution would suit the buyer better.

    • They're a cool bit of kit but definitely more of a specialized set-and-forget thing than something you try to keep updated. As a high-powered compact box you just install somewhere and let run they seem to be great as the things are bulletproof, I've seen them used in environments to access big security camera networks. As a gaming device though, there's much better value in an mITX setup.

I use one of these exact models as my gaming/work pc. 32gb/2070/3*1tb nvme, it humms along nicely driving a 34" widescreen. Never had a issue with it in the 2 years since I got it.
Runs 24/7, mines eth overnight and Elden ring at high/max in the evenings.
For such a small volume they are nearly silent and provide great bang for buck.

        • Yeah haved the Beast Canyon i9 version. Love it. I agree with the iTX comments in regards to price, but they won't be this compact. Not 100% fair comparison.

        • Ahh crap I completely forgot the newer models of these things had PCIe, I was thinking of the older models which weren't expandable

I wanted this too but same thoughts, 9th Gen - nah.
Ended up with the larger Beast Canyon, Gen11 i7

  • better with mac mini M1 and faster, cheaper (already includes RAM and storage)

    • Load Parallels and bam.

      • Parallels is another $110.

        • Yes it's not free.
