    If only these work jailbreak-able…
I love the pastel colours, but I can't bring myself to buy a switch that I can't run emulators on.

    • +12

Not sure why people would neg for wanting to use your purchase how you wish and you didn't mention piracy.

Given it's the dock and joycons that are coloured, you can still use this with a jailbroken switch and just sell the new switch /existing dock/joycons?

      • I guess technically emulation isn’t piracy but only if you’re backing up your original cartridges…

        • +1

I only play games I own.
I'm probably going to get the GB Operator so I can play my cartridges on pc without needing to back them up and install them on to other devices.

        • +8

You can also emulate other consoles, not just Switch.
Trying to get out of this cycle where we no longer own games we bought, what happens to all the online systems 10 years from now when you have bought a digital game and the Nintendo servers are shutdown do you can't re-download if you're Switch dies?
This is happening more and more so the hacking community is the only way to unlock the hardware and software we legally purchased.

          • @cook99: It’s not emulation if you’re playing backed up Switch games on your Switch.
I assumed the original comment meant running retroarch and that it would need to somehow backup original cartridge for older systems which I think is no easy feat

            • +2

@FireRunner: Absolutely, didn't mean playing backed up Switch games, that ain't emulation 😃

      • +1

I believe there is a pattern on the back of the console as well

You require a hardware mod (eg HWFLY) to be able to run homebrew software on V2 hardware. It is not a trivial installation but with a good tutorial, patience and the right tools it's VERY do-able.

      • +1

I was considering one, but soldering isn't my area of expertise, let alone micro soldering to install the HWFLY.
I've got an unpatched switch coming in the mail though, so I can't complain. Would be nice to have a HWFLY on a v2 though. So I dont need to plug in stuff every time I boot it up.

        • +1

Yeah - if you want to play online you'll want to keep a unit unmodified. But for general offline use, once you've gone modded you will never go back to swapping cards.

    • Wild that I have thousands of dollars worth of GB,GBC,GBA, PS1 and PS2 games and someone thinks me wanting to be able to enjoy them on one console is neg worthy.

PSVita is a decent choice for this, does up to PS1 nicely (with many official roms) but I haven't tried N64.

Great screen, more portable, battery life is good and can be replaced if it starts lacking and stable firmware.

      • +1

Got a vita in the mail. Sent it off to get restored.
Definitely going to give it a go for emulation along with the hackable switch I ordered today.

Why jailbreak? Play as per as is!

    • +7

Play roms of games you own without the usual can't read card inserted… With kids using them this happens very often!

    • +1

To play emulated games that you legally own original and more often multiple copies of.

Also jailbreak offers additional settings including improved framerates / deblur on some games.

      • +1

Yep, you can tweak CPU/GPU/RAM speeds to get better performance or better battery life in both handheld and docked mode. It’s pretty cool especially in titles that the switch struggles with

You can also stream from PC, backup Switch game cartridges and play them digitally, install and play unofficial games and even run Android natively!

    • +8

Because I can do what I want with my electronics?

I own every game I play, its just nice to be able to play them all one one device.

      • +2

        THIS.

I prefer to run my games off a 2TB T7 SSD especially when I'm travelling. Losing (or having stolen) a $350 SSD is far less painful than losing a few thousand dollars worth of game cards.

I got this 2 weeks ago for $370 through The Gamesmen on eBay with eBay Plus. They had 2 discounts which were able to be stacked, not sure if that offer still exists though.

  • Last time I bought it was at RRP $429 and I help some guy overseas get it for 4 figures.
I wouldn't buy it again until well below $300 especially with OLED hitting low $400's in stacking deals .

    • Yeah, was surprising how quick the oled dove in price.

    • For those who will only use it in docked mode,
I think it is still worth buying at ~$350-400, it doesn't make any difference compared with OLED model.

  • This looks to be a good buy if one has stock at local store.

    • I think a deal was posted for it at $85 or around that. And even then it was VERY limited stores.
I keep getting "Undefined Undefined Undefined" when trying to put in postcodes/store locations.

      • Weird. I can search. However I see some stock in Victoria not in NSW

        • Turns out it was a temporary issue.
Shows up for me now. Unfortunately no stock anywhere near me :(

    They are getting desperate now!!

You comment this in every/most Switch (especially OLED) deal.

I, for one, applaud the bit 👏

      • That's pretty funny

  • wow…to think that I was seriously considering buying this for $700 back when this was hard to get 😂
