I'm looking for a prepaid mobile broadband to use for 2-3 weeks.
What are some good deals on these - minimum of 1GB data and 30 day expiry would be good; more would be better!
Will need to use it with a laptop.
I stay at Adelaide.
Prepaid mobile (USB) broadband

They don't have that deal anymore though
Do you need the dongle or do you have one already?
Don't have a dongle - so have to get a starter pack
Woolies is doing a $19 special on a prepaid broadband dongle with 4GB data for 30 days on the Optus network.
Officeworks has a Crazy John's dongle on clearance for $12.46 - operates on Voda network. I'm not sure how much data comes with it. EDIT: Just checked out the Crazy John's site and it appears it may be 2gb

https://hotspot.internode.on.net/coverage/index.phpThanks for the bargains. Woolies sounds the best. I am a little sceptical about the Crazy John network , although at that price it is tempting.
On the Woolies page it states a Virgin starter pack for 19$ - can't find the optus deal.Virgin is owned by Optus.
crazy johns uses voda network
find a Telstra TSN store, ask them for the $19 turbo usb modem (they should know what you're talking about)
walk into a coles/woolies, whichever has the $30 telstra sim starter kit for $10.
call Telstra, tell them you're activating it for an IPAD
so all up $29, 3GB of data with 30Day expiry with a USB modem
Doesn't it need to be a a micro sim for ipad?
can always tell them you cut it down
thats how people do a $2 sim starter kit with $150 recharge for ipads.
Does anyone know where or if its possible to get USB dongles that are unlocked or generic. Thinking of putting in an amaysim sim card from tablet into dongle for internet whenever I want - or is that not possible?
Amaysim is optus, yes? An optus locked dongle will work.
But you might find a wifi modem better.Yeap supposedly Optus dual band 3g network. But does this mean Optus dongles will necessarily take the sim? Thought it Goes by sim specifics than the actual underlying network it accesses?
Never thought of the WiFi modem. Are those usually unlocked and are they usually more exp than USB internet dongles? I assume so since they work similarly but for multiple devices akin to a mini router right?
I think you need the USB dongle and the 3G modem (has USB port for the dongle). I'm not sure about all-in-one 3g modem, are they available now?
I am using Amaysim for our tablets, $1GB for $9.90 and will last for 30 days. 2.5GB for $19.90, 4GB at $29.90 I think. Pretty good speed I'm getting in Melbourne.
Of course, you gotta get your own USB dongle, try gumtree for that :)
Me too. I use the 9.90 for monthly prepaid internet on my acer iconia a501 tablet. Works great enough. Plugged it into my iPhone 3gs when I got the new HTC other day and surprisingly it can access Optus network too as a normal mobile.
Have you tried putting these into a WiFi modem or USB internet dongle? I've used neither and am not sure the technicals behind prepaid internet Sims. Are they compatible regardless across dongle and WiFi modems etc.
Oddly the Vodafone cust service in India once went off track and was.talking to me about dongles. Mentioned diff bands and how you can get dongles that work across multiple country bands really well e.g the main countries across the world like Asia and America and of course Australia. Is this "dual band" dongles?
My SIM is the normal SIM and works fine with the USB dongle too, just need to have the correct APN settings (same data settings as your phone).
I bought my USB dongle 3 years ago from Malaysia, (Huawei E160E) and have used 5 different telcos so far with it (3 Malaysian telcos, Amaysim and Voda). No problem with it :) Oh, and we use an Aztech 3G modem most of the time with the dongle.
i just scored a e220 huawei vodaphone (but unlocked) dongle of ebay for $8 delivered. got a $9.90 1gig 30 day Amaysim yesterday. took me 10 minutes to work out how to set it up (I downloaded the Huawei Mobile partner prog). easy peasey.
Rather than create another thread I'd thought I'd join this one. Moving on a couple of months is Amaysim still the best value for money ($/gb?).
I'd only need 1GB/month as I use my business' internet (there for most of the time; only go home to sleep.)
It'll be for remotely checking on IPcams, workstations and light browsing.
best value for money ($/gb?)
Woolies is better at $26 for 5GB 45 day.
I'd only need 1GB/month
You'd best get one of those 12-month recharges then, for convenience. Telstra even is cheap for that.
red bull prepaid. I got the $10 deal some time ago which has 90days expiry 5gb data.
