Good price, but quite weird to have a long stick plug into side of the laptop

    • +1

Yeah I don’t understand why you would want this, instead of a unit with a detachable USB. This looks bad both for the connector and whatever device you plug it into.

    • +1

I agree, a short pop out cable would be much better. One bad whack on the drive could torque the heck out of the port and connector.

      • So it's the perfect ORICO product for Pam 2 to whinge about when it breaks?

    • One would assume that's why it's on clearance yeah? USB-C cable enclosures exist ;)

      • +1

Or just a usb c extension onto this

        • +1

Not really a good idea because you need to get a decent extension cable (which defeats the purpose of getting this - low cost). Bought some el cheap USB 3.0 extension cables (only 1m). Run into a lot of issues with USB 3.0 enclosures. USB 3.1/3.2 gen 2 cable demands more. I even bought an enclosure that comes with just USB-C/USB-C cable in the package. The seller throws in a USB-C to USB-A cable and that cable doesn't work properly in USB 3.1 gen 2 mode. Drive keeps disconnecting.

            • @Clear: Not really. Some comments on issues with Macs, PD not working (or PD and data - only one works but not both - which seem weird), broke after a few months.

I guess if you get the 50cm extension cable, there is a "better" chance that the extension cable can hide its quality issue. However, that's not necessary a good thing as you could run into intermittent problems.

If you need to get an extension cable with this, then just go for one that has a separate cable design.

              • +1

@netsurfer: PD not really relevant to a USB enclosure is it?

                • +1

@Clear: So, getting a USB 3.1 gen 2 extension cable which is likely to be using dodgy wires for PD and is basically only going to be used for this. I don't quite get the combination:

                  • Cost cutting design for the enclosure.
                  • Inferior chipset.
                  • Get a cheap extension and live with the compromise (assuming that extension cable only used dodgy / inferior wires on the PD pins and somehow used better quality wires on data pins).

It feels like fomo on a $15 NVMe enclosure and then try to find a band aid solution to address some of its shortcomings.

                  • +1

@netsurfer: I just enjoy your breakdowns of everything. I've bought neither and don't plan on buying either, like most things on OzBargain.

                  • @netsurfer: Have you experienced the same issue with drives with a female USB C input? I haven't had any issues with USB micro B cables apart from physical degradation.

Edit: I would agree you're likely better off with a 20Gbps ASMedia controller.

                    • +1

@TeddyBear: If it is USB micro B, then it is at most USB 3.0 / 3.1 / 3.2 gen 1 (micro B with two blocks). The demand for that is less challenging. Or, quite often just USB 2 - with USB 2, you won't run into issues normally (USB 3 is 10x the bandwidth).

USB-C, however, especially USB 3.1 / 3.2 gen 2 and above (i.e. gen 2x2, Thunderbolt 3/4/USB 4) is a different story. I've ran into issue with USB 3.0 extension cable (cheapo 3rd party ones) already. Interestingly, one of my USB 3 enclosure (branded one) comes with an extension cable and that one works.

Have you experienced the same issue with drives with a female USB C input?

Yes. A cheapish USB-C enclosure, the seller included an extra cable (USB-C to USB-A). Technically, it is possible to achieve USB 3.2 gen 2 with USB-A, but a lot of sellers "assume" if you use USB-A, you want to run in USB 3.2 gen 1 mode (that's their excuse for sending you a cheap cable or converter). The seller gave me such cable without letting me know. It kinda works in USB 3.2 gen 2 mode for a few seconds before random drop offs. USB-C to USB-A cable included in a Samsung T5 supports USB 3.2 gen 2.

USB 3.2 gen 2x2 is USB-C only and requires a decent cable. Thunderbolt 3/4/USB 4, the cable requirement is even higher. A lot of mobile phone USB-C cables are USB 2.0 only (even Apple does that to save cost).

                      • @netsurfer:

If it is USB micro B, then it is at most USB 3.0 / 3.1 / 3.2 gen 1

Yep, those all being the same 5Gbps standard really hits a nerve.

it is possible to achieve USB 3.2 gen 2 with USB-A, but a lot of sellers "assume" if you use USB-A

Just like how they "assume" you want USB 2.0 with your USB C charging cable. I can understand if want to cut costs for the data lines on a 2m long cable, but I've seen the same practice on 0.3m and 0.5m cables.

Thunderbolt 3/4/USB 4, the cable requirement is even higher.

Since Thunderbolt 4 is just a fully featured Thunderbolt 3 (TB3) and USB 4 incorporates most of the standards of TB3 (even if some are optional, as with TB3). I look forward to cost of the active copper and fibre cables if TB5 doubles the bandwidth.

                        • @TeddyBear: Thunderbolt 4/USB 4, at the moment, is basically just a fully featured Thunderbolt 3. However, the video side could change with the new standard to support DisplayPort 2.0 (from DisplayPort 1.4). Question is how soon Intel will implement that. When that happens, it could be another mess (just like Thunderbolt 3/DP 1.2 vs DP 1.4 mess or even USB-C/alt-mode DP 1.2 vs DP 1.4). I guess most of us are not ready for 4K/120Hz displays or 8K/60Hz displays.

The USB-C/TB3/TB4 mess continues. Yes, TB4 doesn't do much for data (other than introducing a more expensive 2m cable capable of supporting up to 40Gbps), we'll need to wait for TB5 (but that will probably required PCIe gen 5 or at least PCIe gen 4). Yeah, more expensive cables.

    • Agree. I would't trust having this hanging out on the USB-C port of a laptop or desktop, likely to break the port. Should attach to a cable instead.

My wife says that too,. sometime I wonder if she's into long large sticks lolz 🤑

Read the feedback comments, mainly the ones people had issues:

      • Reliability (DOA).
      • The USB-C connector is short so if you have an Android phone which supports USB 3 (though honestly, no Android phone supports USB 3.2 gen 2 yet), with a case, you may have issue connecting it.

Then, there is the chipset, JMS583. Honestly, if you really want to go with JMS583, it is best to get one where the maker provides a firmware update (as certain firmware versions have known issue with JMS583). Out of the 3 chipsets for USB 3.1/3.2 gen 2 enclosures, JMicron one is generally the least liked by most people.

    Spend $252.32. No thanks.

    • It's US$10.69 not $252.32.

    • Even has a $2 off code nice find.

  • Would this be faster than Western Digital My Passport External Hard Drive?

    • +2

That would depend on whether you choose express or regular AusPost. /s

      • But seriously though, would it be faster?

Swap over the currency to USD

      • thankyou

    • getting AU $15.46

AU dollar fluctuates so what went up 50 cents or so

Edit: thanks OP bought one will try a second 😁

  • getting USD $9.72
Edit nvm, there's GST on top

  • ETA April 21 is ambitious with Shenzen currently locked down

  • NVMEs may look like a USB from a distance, but they're way too big for this to be a convenient use for it. A cable is a necessity, this is uncomfortable.

  • ORICO is good, I am happy with mine from a previous deal but it has a female socket and a detachable cable

  • Well that was easy on a pc. Aliexpress is the worst phone app I have encountered, bar none, and Aliexpress on the phone without the app is impossible.

  • Who thought this was a good idea?

    • Was? Deal is over?

Edit: yeah showing AU$25 now unless I'm doing something wrong?
