Good price for one of the better value for money grinders - have been using this for a while with both Aeropress and v60.

That being said, if you can find a similarly discounted 1zpresso jx it might be worth spending a little extra on one of those.

Dumb question - can this be used for pepper , we use a lot and break all the regular ceramic ones easily

    • Pretty sure it would work.

      • how about chest and nuts

        • Pretty much grind anything coffee size, it's got steel burrs.

      • Cheers mate

    • You doing spice rubs? :)

  • This vs Porlex?

      This by far

    • I'm personally using a porlex tall, and it's very capable. It grinds very fast, the bearings are very smooth. It's definitely has a much larger size distribution compared to what I see coming out of say an ek, but it's capable for my filter grind. I'm mostly using it as I'm happy to buy one less thing from china.

I am looking for someone with the chestnut c2 however as I do want to compare how much better the distribution is on the c2.

      • The timemore grinders are much, much better built than porlex. The entire body is machined aluminium and there are no stamped sheet metal parts. The shaft is supported at multiple points with good bearings and has no perceptible side to side play at all. I get a much tighter distribution and far more solid feel from both my timemore grinders vs the porlex.

What a deal, chaper than aliexpresss with 1-3 months shipping

If you're thinking about buying a $200-300 filter coffee grinder like Baratza encore and only drink 1-2 cups at a time I would highly consider buying this instead.
To grind 12g of coffee for a V60 it'll take you approx 12-15 seconds, with significantly more even grind and a lot less noise.

If you're comparing it to an 'old style' ceramic manual grinder like the porlex or hario skerton, it's not even close. This will grind coffee in half the time with much better results (and replicable by easily counting clicks).

One downside is the adjustment isn't really fine enough for espresso. You'd want to upgrade to the slim+ for that.

Step up for filter dedicated grinder would be the 1presso jx, but that's $200ish. Then you get to the Kinu/Comandante ~$500 region but that's definitely well past the zone of diminishing returns

    • How on earth are you grinding 12g in this in 15 seconds?! I've been using one for over 12 months, and admittedly I'm wound in to a finer grind for the aeropress and do a 16g dose, but I absolutely measure the grind time in minutes, not seconds.

I've done a side by side test with my mate's porlex too (he was keen to see if it was worth getting himself a C2) and although the timemore was slightly faster, it wasn't a night and day difference.

I love my C2: it does the job well and it's really quite nicely made and pretty to look at; but the idea of grinding even 12g to anything other that rock salt size in under a minute seems a bit fanciful in my experience.

Wow that's so odd? I'm on around setting 23-25 and have timed it a few times in that zone.
It's significantly faster than my comandante or kinu M47 at the same grind size. My Slim+ is a bit faster at around 1g/sec, I tried my mate's JX and it feels about the same.

Haven't used my Aeropress for a while, maybe the ~10 finer setting makes a huge difference in timing?

Edit: just tried it on setting 24, landed between 13-14 secs with filter roast columbian decaf from supreme

        • Well you got me interested!

Just wound mine out to 24 and timed it: 30s to get through 16g of hairy chest blend from Alchemy.

Tightened it back up to 12 and put another 16g through: just over 2min (including me changing arms twice cause I was working damn hard to keep it cranking.

Pretty sure I've had it set to 10-12 for a while now, and I don't always have the enthusiasm to work it hard which is why it would be taking me in excess of 2 min to grind. Be very interested to see how fast you could get yours through on a setting of 12 or so, seems like a lot of extra work to get that finer grind.

Been using my C2 for about 6 months and for 12g on 17 clicks, it usually takes a bit over 20 seconds. Such a difference from the cheap ceramic burr grinders which typically take over 2 minutes!

From memory, I think they recommend no fewer than 12 clicks for the standard C2, at which point it'll be in the 2 minutes plus territory (and potentially wear out the burrs). If looking to get an espresso-fine grind, it's better to get Timemore's titanium burrs which are suited for espresso grind sizes.

          • @icarus77: That's good to know. I might wind mine back out slightly and test the brew with a slightly coarser grind.
Definitely seems like mine is taking so long because of the finer grind.

I'm not enough of an afficiando to be wed to a manual grinder, I just don't have the bench space for a big electric unit. I really wish there was a compact, single dose electric solution that wasn't crazy expensive.

            • @Srey: I hear you! Bench space is scarce on my end too, hence the manual grinder.

Went from an electric blade grinder (aka bean smasher) > ceramic burr > C2. I'm not a huge coffee nerd but definitely notice the difference.

Gotta admit though, it's pretty satisfying to be able to pack the whole kit in a small bag and enjoy decent coffee whilst camping or on travels.

            • +1

@Srey: the lagom mini is coming out soon and seems to have very favourable reviews.

              • @simulacrum: Oooh, that thing is pretty sexy. Not sure I can justify the price, especially if it's going to stall out on espresso grinds in the future, but certainly interesting.

  • Why would you grind chestnuts?

  • The white colour has lower shipping price.

    • I tried both colours and returned the same price

  • I got this for $59 from eBay with the 40 bucks off plus thing (cancelled during trial)

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/353744569682

Great little grinder for my v60 Aeropress and trinity zero. Have to do two batches for my chemex 6cup however . It’s super fast and beats the fellow stagg to the boil easily

  • Is this suitable for coldpress coarse grind?

    Comparing to the hario ceramic

    • Assuming you meant cold brew? I use this grinder regularly for my cold brews and it's great! Only downside is that the bean capacity is only around 25g, so you may need to just grind multiple portions to get the right amount of bean.

I haven't personally used the hario, but from reviews around the web it's pretty much unanimous that the C2 is better.

I still get some fines that come through the grind but it's not a deal breaker.

  • Ordered this yesterday and it was delivered to ACT within 24 hours (haven't had a chance to open yet)

  • Is there a rubber grip accessory for this? I cope with a tea towel.

The textured body isn't friendly to eczema hands.
