New Car Pricing Comparisons - Compare with The Public ?

Hi,
We are in the process of buying a new car and I was wondering is there a site or page where other people who bought new cars can post what they paid? so if I was to go into the dealer I can be confident that I'm not getting ripped off or how much I can haggle.

Thanks

    Whirlpool.

confident that I'm not getting ripped off or how much I can haggle.

    Lol

    • Ahh thank you, forgot about that one.

    • Due to lack of stock and long wait time for delivery LIST PRICE is a good place to start

You are in for a rude shock!

  • +1

You seems being ripped off and you can’t haggle (much).

Demand exceeds supply. There are plenty of people lined up to get the vehicle, they aren’t gonna to sell to someone who wants the biggest discount

  • Are you at a dealership? Is the salesman’s mouth moving? If so, you’re getting ripped off.

And price is subjective. What you are happy with may not be great to someone else or may be the steal of the century to another. Find a price you a happy to pay and take that to a dealer. If they say no, try another dealer or reassess your price.

What a stigma to live by … Lol I don't disagree with you … but imagine going to work everyday and taking the crown as one of the dodgiest careers society has to offer and the only career dodgier than yours is a second hand car dealer.

      • +4

        Don’t forget property managers!

    • Given there is NO STOCK its more of a case to FIND A DEALER THE CAR FIRST
Or at least one on the way
      Then discuss price

  • -1

You can get like 1-2 K off MSRP I reckon. Just be firm on price and be ready to walkout if you don't like it. Don't look desperate when buying

    • Any recent evidence?

      • this was the most recent Whirlpool post on the Kia Sportage

"Managed $4600 off sticker price on a SX+ 1.6T petrol. September delivery. Pretty happy. Oh and floor mats and slimline plates hehe"

        • +5

Whirlpool is full of BS artists who convenient skip key details when bragging about their prices.

          • +1

@plmko: They forgot to mention their trade in was valued at $4600.

        • Hail Flood damaged?

    • +3

The way the market is atm, getting that much off, is highly unlikely. Now with all the floods, there are literally thousands upon thousands written off vehicles, which then flows off into the new & used car market.Up go the prices, supply & demand. You might score a ‘demonstrator’ @ a discount, but it is going to be very tight for awhile. The good old ‘stealerships’ will be rubbing their hands together!

      • You might score a ‘demonstrator’ @ a discount

Very unlikely. A 'demonstrator' is a car that is in stock, available now, that can be sold above RRP because it isn't a new car with a manufacturer's RRP anymore. If anything, a dealer will sell it above RRP for the fact that it is "available now"

        • This 100%

I saw this was the case 3 years ago when I bought mine, and the wait was only 1-2 weeks.

OP’s best chance is to pay RRP and get as many extras as you can get thrown in. Sometimes dealerships have thrown in fuel/gift cards, can’t hurt to ask.

  • If you can get a discount on a car nowadays, either old or new you'll win the 'OzBargain haggler of the year' award.

With the current shortages and sky high prices you'll be lucky to get 'free mats' thrown in.

For obvious reasons, a full tank of juice on pickup is currently a thing of the past.

    • Can definitely get a discount on used through private sales, you just need to find someone that doesn't know their market value and is selling by word of mouth

  • +5

Be careful on just quoting prices you've found online. That sale might have only happened due to various reasons (dealership or salesperson need numbers, customer was within their local area, looked like they'd be financing etc etc) or could just be total BS.

If you knew someone online supposedly got $4600 off, but you could only get $2000 off, would you be disappointed? Would you hold off on buying, or be frustrated with your purchase? That's the trouble with hunting around for what others have been quoted.

Been shopping around recently as wife wrote her car off. Worst time to be buying a car. All of the cars were looking at have a wait - not fancy or anything, just cause of shortages everywhere.

Multiple dealers have told us sticker is the price, no room to haggle. If we dont buy it, the next person in the door will - its not like they have the stock there to get rid of. Also been told that some auto makers have also removed dealer incentives because they just dont have the stock to move.

Would be surprised if you would be able to get a deal on anything with a wait at all.

You will get discount OP lot of pessimistic people here

    • username doesn't check out

      • Lol

        • hahah thanks, positive thinking.

  • OP

  • I got around $6k off RRP for my recent purchase.

    • +1

what car? what was wait time like? did they have stock on the lot?

Just shooting out random amounts doesnt help OP

      • It’s as good as anyone else spouting they got $xxxx off their car. It was on an advertised deal and I got virtually nothing off the advertised price even with 2 of us ordering at the same time.

Oh, and I get wait until late September to get it.

        • Sooooo you didnt really get "6k off" cause it was an advertised offer… really defeats the purpose of OPs question when you leave that info out

          • @k-rokfm: There is no answer to ‘how much can I haggle’. It is specific to the type of vehicle, options required and stock available.

The same question gets asked time and time again. For the last 12 months or more he answer is largely the same. If you wan to buy a new vehicle, there isn’t much haggling because stocks are low and demand is high.

None searches anymore, so you get stupid answers to the same question that was asked 2 days ago because regulars are sick of ‘post before search’

      • It is the internet it is legit

  • -1

I got 6% off my purchase made mid Jan and car is being delivered next week

    • What did you buy?

  • how much I can haggle

Haggle!? With the current new car shortages and long waits, there isn't much haggle room.

  • -1

I can tell you from experience, Whirlpool and the Facebook forums that there is virtually no haggle room for Toyotas at the moment.

If someone says they got a discount, ask them how - do they trade in every 12 months? Is the dealer a mate? Are they getting a fleet/ABN discount?

If they don't answer with something that is achievable by you = BS.

  • +1

Current market rrp minus 5% is about as good as you can get. Anything in demand you’re lucky to get any discount at all. Many models have 12+ month delivery time, so they’re in no rush to discount.

    • 5% is approx the market.

But I recommend people to ask for additional things such as boot liner, dash mat and etc.

  • Not sure how you’re paying for it, but possibly consider doing a short novated lease eg 1 year.

You’ll get discounts on the stamp duty, fleet prices, and at the end of the year you can buy the remaining cost for whatever the gap is.

Can’t hurt to get a quote, and do some numbers. Just an FYI, you can’t use a novated lease quote for haggling a non lease car.

    • I do have my own small business, I have a 2016 Lexus NX300H I would like to trade in also .

I will look into what your have mentioned, thanks

I used the above website gauge but I ended up using motorscout.com.au

Save the hassle and use one of the many buying services that are available these days. I used one and saved more than $3500 on the best price that I could negotiate elsewhere. It also saves all the hassle of dealing with the sales bull$hit and the back and forth between the salesman and the manager and then the hard sell they lay on you for the after market rip offs.

I used a service that doesn't charge commission but they receive a kickback from the dealer. Despite this, it was still significantly cheaper than buying from a dealer. The reason being that they get corporate pricing. You specify the vehicle and options that you want and it is put out to the dealerships to tender upon. You then select the best price or nearest dealer or whatever motivates you. There is no compulsion to accept any of the offers if you don't want to.

    • Who did you use specifically?

      • And when did you buy?

        • Picked up my car on the 1st of February this year.

      • Motor Scout.

  • If you have access to a novated lease quote this will likely get you a good price. You don't have to buy via novated lease just use it to get you a good price

    • Not really, as the first thing the dealer will say is "bring in the quote so we can see that we're comparing apples and apples".

I've turned people away who had ridiculous lease quotes

      • Just means you missed out on the job. I've never had an issue finding a dealer to bite. I take the quote with me and show it. I usually take to 3 dealers, 1 not interested other 2 are.

        • No, just means I, and my dealership, missed out on selling a car at a margin too small for what we deem our time is worth

          • @spackbace: My point was this method does work if you are trying to negotiate a good price. Some dealers opt not to bite but others will, at the end of the day they know someone will get the job as the lease company already has an agreement in place.

            • @[Deactivated]: Except there's zero guarantee that a dealer will bite right now with stock shortages the way they are. Instead you just lead OP on a wild goose chase as they go around town with an unrealistic figure

      • Are lease quotes done on a retail price list, or on fleet pricing (in Toyota's case, bronze/silver/gold)?

        • Generally fleet pricing, silver or gold

  • I used Motor Scout and picked up my car on the 1st of February 2022.
