May want to put the price in the title for the example

Perhaps a good chance, too, to grab a 27inch iMac on sale: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/search?query=imac%2027&page=1 as they have silently disappeared from Apple's website after Tuesday's event.

    • +1

Apple are phasing out all intel chip imacs though, I’d be a tad worried about updates in the future.

      • They'll support for a few years at least and there's no replacement model yet.

        • +2

Mac Studio is pretty much the replacement.

          • +1

@TimApple: Well if Tim Apple says it, it must be true. $5k with a screen seems pretty steep.

        • +1

GIven OS features are now starting to be exclusive to Apple Silicon, I'd be reluctant to commit to an Intel mac.

      • True, but it would not be as though the Intel machine stops working when that happens in five years or so.

I would be more disappointed JB don’t have a model with a ssd bigger than 512GB.

    • +7

Seems to me like the M1 mac mini for ~$1k + BYO display is a better option. Should be faster and gives more flexibility. Depending on what display you want could be much cheaper too.

      • I have this combo and the Mini is great for my requirements. I have a Dell 27" 4k + external speaker + external Thunderbolt hub + webcam. If I was doing it again today, I'd get the Mac Mini and the new Studio Screen and free up space on my desk and get a much better experience (Dell screen is not as good as an old iMac 5k I used to have from 2017)

        • the more i see the studio display the more i think it isnt worth it

          600 nits only
          no HDR
          limited to 5K for macs
some ipads dont work and some cap out at 1440p

Dont get me wrong its a beautiful display with awesome speakers and good camera/mic, but the price is a tad too much even for apple
The alienware QDOLED is a better deal if you were to get a better camera and speakers, though it wont be a nice package

  • Can you run windows 11 on these yet

    • -7

      Yes

      • dont know why got negs, im running windows 11 on my mac m1 and its runs awesome using parallels desktop

    • -7

Why would you want to run Bloatware on a Mac?

      • +10

hahaha you're so cool and edgy

    • +7

I have a requirement for work to run both Mac & Windows versions of software. I run W11 through Parallels. Works well with 16GB of RAM.

      • +1

Windows 11 ARM. Seems to run x86 programs ok though.

      • Run Windows in Proxmox on a server.

      • Yearly subscription for parallels on top of expensive price for laptop. Any ways to get parallels full version for free?

        • Don't buy the subscription version. I went for outright. Unfortnuately a lot less 'deals' on the perpetual licence but it turned out that an old key I had from a very old version of Parallels I had (from back circa 2010) enabled me to get a decent discount on the upgrade to the latest so I could run W11 ARM on my MBP.

    • +3

On M1 based Macs you can only run windows in a virtual machine. Installing windows natively via Bootcamp is not supported and probably never will be due to vast differences in architecture.

      • -2

        vast differences in architecture

which are dealt with in Parallels by running… the same architecture. There's an ARM version of Windows y'know…

        • +2

Yes, but Apple still doesn't support it installed natively via Bootcamp as it did with older Intel chips. And even if you could run Windows ARM you would still need to run x86-x64 apps under emulation.

          • +2

@aldroid: I was mostly responding to

you can only run windows in a virtual machine

            • @Zorlin: I don't really see the distinction. Parallels mounts and runs a virtual machine for you behind the scenes.

              • @drfuzzy: Parallels also has yearly subscription anyway to not pay and get Windows 11?

              • @drfuzzy: The beauty of installing windows naively and also having Parallels meant that you could boot Windows via Bootcamp and have direct access to the hardware. But then you could also fire up the same partition as a virtual machine within MacOS but with virtualized hardware. Very cool.

Cheaper direct from Apple with the education union discount. I've heard that they rarely, if ever, ask for verification of student status.

    • +2

Yep - bought via Apple Education store in January, wasn’t asked for any sort of verification, didn’t need an edu email or anything.

    • Are there sometimes deals that stack with the edu discount?

      • +1

Not to my knowledge. Apple doesn't offer coupons, and if I remember correctly the bundle deals with airpods etc. haven't applied to education pricing.

      • +2

Buy Apple cards from Woolies when they do 20/30x points.

      • +1

Sometimes CR/SB have bonus cashback on Apple Education. And discounted Apple credit.

  • Do we think these 10% sales will apply to Apple's new Studio Display monitor? For Example

  • I can get used 16 inch 2019 macbook pro with 2tb ssd i9 processor for $2000, is it a good buy compared to this?

    • +4

      no not really.

    • +1

The M1's are pretty solid i have to say.

    • +4

      Not even close

    • Sounds like a beefed up setup too, so expect (a bit?) less battery life and more fan noise.

On the other hand, it's easier to run Windows on it, and it's still going to be a good laptop for another 3-5 years, depending on what you need it for.

      $2000 is pricey, however.

    • intel macs are losing value pretty quickly, I'd personally avoid

    • +2

be prepared for absolutely awful battery life

source: my work i9 macbook pro

    • -1

If can find one with a Radeon Pro 5600M GPU at a reasonable price then I'd say it's worth it. If you want to use Boot Camp for some gaming on a Mac then an Intel Mac is the only option. Everything else is worse with Intel though. Battery life, heat, fan noise etc.

      • -1

The price is there, $2000, and it doesn't seem reasonable.

  • +6

Price match at officeworks before they drop their prices.

  • +1

These are fantastic, I have the base 14" with the 96w charger instead of the 67w for fast charging. Cant really fault it at all, best laptop i have owned by far. I did run into a strange bug using Firefox though.

    • I purchased a late 2020 13" m1 pro, 14" wasn't out back then, but there were leaks. I really like the 14" cos of that 120hz but that doesn't justify a $1400 upgrade (after trade in). maybe in few years : p

      • Yeah for sure you're right, that option is far better for price to performance, but the high quality screen was worth it in my opinion, and some other nice changes i liked too. 14" is my favourite size for laptops.

        • +1

well well what do I say hehe ended up upgrading to the 14", love it. just picked it up this morning. display is absolutely gorgeous.

    • I did run into a strange bug using Firefox though.

Was it a fullscreen ad for a Disney movie, foisted upon you with no warning?

      • Lol what are you referring to? the bug happened when watching full screen content on firefox, a memory leak of sorts would slowly build up and before you know it your laptop was using 90% ram and cpu. I didnt even notice for ages because the thing is so quite and still ran as normal.

  • +5

Just get an M1 Air and save a bunch of cash, unless you REALLY need the performance. The time of having to buy premium models for a typical workflow is over. I am still shocked to this day how capable my base model M1 is, and I do throw it some pretty demanding workload sometimes.

    • +7

It’s not just performance increase, you get a better display, better speakers, longer battery life, faster charging, more ports, better camera, and the list goes on.
CPU and GPU performance is not always the only deciding factor between Air and Pro.

      • +3

Fair point, definitely - I would personally spend just a bit of the extra cash on a good 4K display, but of course that’s a very individual thing as to how often it’s going to be used portably. Also, we are talking over double the price here

        • +2

The display on the new Macbook Pro's are unusually good. the mini LED, 120Hz, HDR, 1600 nit display is hard to beat. I have the 16" and it looks just as good as a LG C1 OLED.

    • +1

M1's are a revolutionary upgrade, no joke. Performance, Battery life. The works. The previous models are much less worthy.

And yeah, an Air is very good value!

    • +1

Am also a big supporter of the Macbook Air M1. A major advantage of it for me is that it's fanless - so completely silent.

I get that some people will say that other products like the Macbook Pro 14 have 'quiet fans' or if they can barely hear it, but for people like me it makes a big difference, especially if we're willing to accept the trade off of performance throttling if it does get too hot.

    • M1 air doesn’t support more than 1 external monitor so is unsuitable to those that need that functionality

      • I use an iPad w/ sidecar for a 3rd monitor (on top of built-in and external monitor), and with DisplayLink you can get even more.

        • I used to have a DisplayLink dock and the software was a huge resource hog, making even watching a YouTube video laggy and that was with 1 screen. When Sierra got released, their driver broke and everyone was forced to use 1080 res for 6 months while they worked on a fix. Native support is a hard requirement for me

  • Unable to install cracked softwares on Mac. Finding it difficult being Windows user. Any ideas tips?

    • Use Parallels or Bootcamp to run Windows

      • Parallels I believe have to pay for it as trial is only for few days. Laptop is already expensive. My funds in Apple got stuck I have to use them ha ha.

        • He did mention bootcamp. If you have an Intel based Mac, you could use bootcamp. Most of the instructions on the Web aren't the fastest way. Though the fastest way does involve doing it on a PC (extract the Windows 10/11 ISO onto an SSD (instead of actually install Windows 10/11 step by step), overlay it with bootcamp files, then assuming the SSD is already on an USB enclosure, connect that USB enclosure with SSD to your Intel Mac and boot to Windows 10/11. Runs just like a Windows laptop (native, not virtual machine).

If M1 and you cannot afford Parallels, there are other free ones.

    • What kind? MS Office? Not sure what you mean by unable to install, were the software for macOS or Windows or something else? Definitely fail if you try to install a non-macOS software on a Mac, nothing to do with cracked or not.

      • I tried to install full version luminar and Adobe lightroom, was unable to install. I am a budding photographer I don't have money to buy expensive subscriptions hence I need to install cracked softwares.

        • If you want to join the dark side, then don't pretend being a Mac user is superior or give you an excuse to use pirated apps. Can't install a pirated app? Well, then you are just a Mac rookie.

        • What error does it actually throw you?

      • Parallels require yearly subscription as well which is also on top of laptop price.

    • You can get cracked from here www.mactorrents.io/
Microsoft Office, Adobe suit, keka etc

  • +1

If you needed one, you'd have already bought it and in a job requiring this 10% would be meaningless. Otherwise wait for the M2 air.

    • correct

  • Haven't used a Mac for 15 years .. would this be better than a 12th Gen H series windows laptop?

    • Same thoughts. Can use lot of cracked softwares on windows but can't do it easy on M1 Mac os. I am concerned about user friendliness with Mac.

      • +1

I am concerned about user friendliness with Mac

Nah, you are concerned about cracked software availabilty or where to look for it. (IDK how to help you, BTW)

        • -1

@Mighty man: Sheit, hope you at least got a legit camera in these circumstances.

            • @pizzaguy: He is using second hand camera with el cheapo adapter and ancient manual focus lenses.

A photographer whinging about not having money… not a good start.

          • @Mighty man: Simple, start with Windows laptop, once you make enough money to afford Adobe lightroom, then start using that.

You cannot hand over your work to clients made using pirated software.

      • It's very easy to get pirated software on mac, m1 just means you have to look around a bit more for version types. Coming from a Windows and Android user MacOS is easy to use, you'll get the hang of it in no time.

    • Depends on the chip. A 12th gen i9 would probably beat these M1 pros, at least until it started throttling from heat. The thing about these is that heat is sooo much less fans don’t work as hard and there is virtually no throttling.
The M1 ultra made available yesterday in a tall Mac mini case of course beats great big hulking workstation class machines (top end AMD threadrippers might still beat it, but that is about it. And then only until heat dissipation becomes an issue).

  • Anyone know when this is running till? I want to get Apple to price match in store but can only get there on the weekend

  • I was waiting for a 10% sale before buying but found the everyday price at Amazon and Officeworks for the 1TB is $3369. So just bought from Officeworks

  • Was able to get JB to beat Officeworks this morning and got it for $3360 - this is the 1TB 14 inch M1 Pro. I've just been setting it up…

  • so sad they don't offer 32gb ram

    • Good excuse to buy an M1 Pro or M1 Max laptop.

  • Are there any discounted jbhifi gift cards I can use to buy this at a further discount?

  • Still sitting on the fence for M2 Mac Pro 14" Laptop.

  • is it possibe to run ps2 games on this via any emulator or something?
