Does it give me a long life?

    • +13

If you don't drink it, yes.

  • +3

Genuine question, why buy this when bleach works and cost a fraction? Is there benefit of using product like this?

    • +5

      Long life.

A reviewer mentioned using it on their coloured grout, where bleach might affect the colour.
I have white grout so just use bleach myself. The thicker gel bleach works great for walls as it sticks for longer.

    • I use undiluted bleach on my white grout in the shower and it removed all the mold well.

Household bleach removes the black colour from the mould, doesn't kill it. Use vinegar or clove oil.

        • Household bleach removes the black colour from the mould, doesn't kill it.

There is lots of conflicting information on the internet. Bleach does kill mould. This published study in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene has the details. They use a 2.4% bleach solution (household bleach is 4.2%) and concluded that:

Despite the high relative humidity in the shower environment, these indoor microenvironments were the least frequently positive for mold, possibly because they are often targeted for mold abatement using cleaners and disinfectants.

Although moisture reduction is recommended as the first step to reduce indoor mold colonization, our study suggests that the use of 2.4% NaOCl disinfectants would also have an impact on the presence of culturable mold and mold allergens, even in chronically moist environments. In addition, 2.4% NaOCl disinfectants are expected to reduce mold counts and allergens in environments not usually targeted for disinfecting, such as windowsills and refrigerator seals, which are also prone to moisture and high humidity.

The results of this study support those of others concluding that hypochlorite disinfectants are effective antimicrobials against mold.

They tested both porous and non-porous surfaces. The porous surfaces took longer (10 mins vs 5 mins).

        • Where do you buy cheap vinegar? I’m looking for 5L.

Bleach breaks down grout, causing cracks and then allowing mould to thrive.

      • +1

I prefer to use the bleach based toilet cleaning gels - being in a suspension they are diluted already and stick to the areas that need it - leave on for 10-15mins and rinse….

      • +3

Bleach breaks down grout, causing cracks and then allowing mould to thrive.

Grout is made of cement which is susceptible to acid attack. The active ingredient in this cleaner is sulphamic acid which cleans grout by eating it away.

The same acid is also used to remove dried cement, grout haze, and mortar residue.

        • The instructions on the product you link have different concentrations to use as a cleaner vs an etcher.

Either way if it's just dirt and grime and spray and wipe product and a bit a scrubbing will do the job. Even just water and scrubbing will.

          • @crazy horse:

The instructions on the product you link have different concentrations to use as a cleaner vs an etcher.

Sure but I didn't mention etching, I mentioned using it as a cleaner. OP was talking about bleach breaking down grout*, but this acidic cleaner does exactly that as well. If you make it more concentrated it will etch concrete which just shows you what it does.

*Anyone knows how much damage it actually does? Bleach is commonly used to clean concrete after all.

    • +8

      Use bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite).
BLEACH DOES NOT BREAK DOWN CONCRETE/GROUT. Jesus.

    • +2

      To address OPs question
I see many items being sold by Bunnings but also sold on eBay.and Amazon
      Even Bunnings own Ozito products!
They are ALWAYS are far cheaper when you buy from a Bunnings store!

Hence I would suggest this is no mistake.
Its Bunnings every day price and hence NOT A DEAL

  • Price matching aldi

    This stuff works awesome, recommended

  • +1

It shouldn't be more than $10 according to news.com.au (and everyone knows how reliable that is) https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/home/interiors/bunnings-10…

  • Thanks OP, will give it a try

  • +1

Thanks, purchased one to see the difference between bleach and this

  • Way better than bleach for sure, bought 2, thanks admin

  • Thought it was some sort of gout spray at first to help me with my knee when I drink on occasion.

I still have mould in the grout despite shooting it with the Anjou Dental Flosser so I still might grab a bottle.

    • +2

You could always spray it on the knee to see how it goes?

      • +2

There’s a bit of mould growing on my knee so there’s that…

  • Anyone got a link for the Aldi one?

  • +7

I feel like in every Bunnings deal there's a price comparison to eBay and I'd like to start a petition to stop that.

There are multiple eBay sellers who literally just stick the Bunnings catalogue on their stores and wait until someone buys from them and then just pocket the profits. It's not a coincidence that they all stock Bunnings exclusive brands (i.e., Ozito, Craftright) at massively over RRP. Seller listed in OP is selling an overflow plug for $15.31, while it's $4.40 at Bunnings and even that is excessive for what it is. I have actually seen product photos on eBay of the item still on the bloody racking in Bunnings… I digress

Yeah this is on special and usually like $10 or so, but nobody is buying it for $19-$24 unless they've got rocks in their head.

    • Absolutely 100% verified - there are dozens and dozens of Bunning products on ebay that are managed as you described, overpriced exorbitantly!! Bunnings prices are normally pretty good.eg Cyclone Secateur Volute Cone Spring $5.50 at Bunnings, $24.85 on ebay!!

Anyone recommend products for getting mould off silicon?

    • +3

If your silicon is white, paper towel and bleach works brilliantly. I followed what this person did in this youtube video and can confirm it works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKCXp8kNeaQ

      • I am guessing this only works if the mould is on the silicone surface and not behind or inside the silicone?

        • +3

It will only effect the surface it's touching.
That's like asking if you can eat a cupcake if it's in a glass cabinet.

          • @KLoNe: Lol.

Woudnt using bleach on silicone also eat away the silicone and cause further issues?

            • @dudebargain: Bleach works very fast - when clean I would rinse off with water. Bleach dilutes instantly with water.

        • exactly, doesn't work for mould behind the silicone.

      • This looks good, thanks for the tip! Paper towel makes sense, to keep it wet and absorb mould.

      • This is the method I use with toilet paper.

Apparent you can replicate those mould silicone remover pastes (so exxy considering how much you need) with cornstarch and bleach mix.
        Am yet to try this.

        • Baking soda and bleach works really well in my experience. Just don't use baking powder (as that will result in chlorine gas)

    • Try hydrogen peroxide

      • What concentration and how should it be applied? Can it be applied on any surface or any limitations?

        • I use 3% and a cotton bud to apply it to the silicone along the top of the bathroom vanity. I've also sprayed it to clean mould from the corners of the shower stall.

I've not had any issue with using HP - silicone hasn't degraded & grout still intact.

    • I just recently bought and used this for both silicon and grout. Was skeptical at first but decided to give it a try. It worked amazingly well. No need to scrub etc. Just apply and wipe/wash off in the shower after 12 hours.

Only problem is it is quite costly. But I am just too lazy to scrub or redo the silicon so would happily pay for almost no effort.

      https://yourhomeheroes.co/products/silicone-mould-hero

fyi, it seems the previous ones are spray according to their video. The newer ones work a lot better since you are just squeezing the gel out.

    • You need to understand, that silicone is your sealer that waterproofs it, so water doesn't go behind in the joints.

The only proper way is to remove the silicone, clean the mould and recaulk it.

And if the bleach method as per below comments works, it means you got a airgap in your silicone and it needs to be replace anyways as it is not doing what it should be doing - prevent moisture from getting in. Mould is a microorganism (fungi) that can grow in that area, but water or bleach should not go there, otherwise within a year, you will have enough water ingress to cause bigger problems.

  • 2L is $24.49,

EDIT: Read the comments, so it seems it’s $10 normally

  • I use exit mould, it works extremely well for killing mould.

    • The main active ingredient is bleach. You can refill your bottle with normal bleach which is much cheaper.

      • I tried bleach and exit mould on the same tiles and the former did not work at all. There is definitely something more important than bleach in it.

        • +2

I tried bleach and exit mould on the same tiles and the former did not work at all.

Was it fresh bleach? Bleach breaks down to salt water and oxygen relatively quickly so old bleach will not be effective.

Exit Mould does contain an amine oxide surfactant which improves wettability. With porous grout, I'm not sure if it makes a big difference. If anything it might speed up absorption, although you could just wait a bit longer if you're using normal bleach.

    • It works temporarily only. Exit mould is essentially what you use to clean Oven (Sodium/Potassium Hydroxide) + Bleach (Hypochlorate), so it is a caustic and harsh product that can damage your clothing, skin, tiles and chrome while spraying on the ceiling or walls in an attempt to remove mould.
