Google Nest Wi-Fi Mesh Alternatives for HFC NBN?

Hi chums, I moved to a 350sqm property with HFC NBN. Signed up to More NBN and tried to setup a new Google Nest Wifi 3-points pack sent by More NBN but no dice. Google Router connects well to the internet with occasional 5-minutes dropouts, but neither of the Google Points could be setup as a mesh network, the Home app saying there's an error but not specifying what error. More NBN then sent a replacement Google Nest pack but the same mesh network error occur. Contacted Google support too but no help, blaming "VLAN-tagging" set by More NBN.

Is there an obvious issue that I'm missing? Is Google Nest Wifi router/Points mesh pack not compatible with HFC?

Otherwise, what alternative 1-2 points mesh system should I buy for my HFC-NBN property which will enable me to swap between ISPs easily if I want to? Ta.

Edit 3/3/22: Thanks everyone for your helpful replies. Right now I'm checking with More to see if its a "VLAN-tagging" issue. HOWEVER,
If it can't be resolved, I plan to return the Google Nest router/Points and buy my own BYO router. Any suggestions of a strong signal (for 350sqm house) BYO router with a reliable Ozbargain track record, that I can use with most NBN ISPs (with idiot-proof setup or just works out of the box)? Cheers.

Did you set up Google wifi to use dhcp?

Google wifi is 100% compatible with HFC (as I’m on it, and using it right now)

    • With or without VLAN tagging?

Nest Wi-Fi doesn't support VLAN ID tags.

Exactly, so saying it works is not always right.

@AndyC1: his question wasn't about vlan tagging though.. op asked "Is Google Nest Wifi router/Points mesh pack not compatible with HFC?", which it is

@87percent: So your RSP dos not have vlag tagging so it is compatible. If you has a RSP that had vlan tagging then you would have said it was not compatible.

So the real answer is that google nest works with NBN HFC where the RSP does not require vlan tagging.

              • @AndyC1: Thank you for this answer, I'm going to check with More NBN if they require vlan tagging.

                • @xdigger: I suggest googling "google nest NBN vlan" and read up to see if you can work around it or not.

@xdigger: More don't use VLAN IDs. PPPoE username & password.

          It supports.VLAN 2, 7 and 10 on recent firmwares

          • @evolver: About freaking time. Now Nest Wi-Fi can plugged to the nbn NTD with TPG and iinet.

    • Any dropouts with few minutes each where the Google router just flashes white?

Also are you able to add the Points to create a mesh?

Switch to a provider that supports it out of the box like Aussie broadband. If I remember correctly, ABB doesnt require vlan tagging. The only time I had dropouts was due to a line issue.

  • I haven't used Google Wifi, but you could likely use the provided router from your ISP with the wireless disabled, and then use the google wifi as an AP connected to the router.

    • Nest Wi-Fi can only be setup as a Wi-Fi access point if you only have one. Nest Wi-Fi can't be setup as Wi-Fi access points with two or three.

Nest Wi-Fi can be plugged into the nbn NTD when the ISP uses IPoE or PPPoE. Nest Wi-Fi can't be plugged into the nbn NTD when the ISP uses a VLAN ID and this mainly affects iinet and TPG.

More use PPPoE with no VLAN ID. Are you plugging in the Nest Wi-Fi router into the nbn NTD or Nest Wi-Fi into a ISPs modem?

    • I'm plugging the Nest Wi-Fi router into the nbn NTD. Nest router provided by More NBN, and I used PPPoE.

I get the stated speeds but suffer occasional 5 minutes dropout a few times a day. Also I cannot create a mesh network with the Google Points, the Home app setups the Points fine but when at the final step of creating a mesh it said an error occurred. This happened with a replacement Nest set too.

NBN confirmed their connection is fine, so suggested it could be a router issue, which is where I'm at.

      • There was a similar problem on here not long ago. The fix was to factory reset Nest Wi-Fi, reinstall the Google Home app and redo the settings and it started working normally.

  • Thanks everyone for your helpful replies.I'm checking with More to see if its a "VLAN-tagging" issue.

If it can't be resolved, I plan to buy my own BYO router set. Any suggestions of a strong signal (for 350sqm house) BYO router with a reliable Ozbargain track record, that I can use with most NBN ISPs with idiot-proof setup? Cheers.

VLAN ID mainly affects iinet and TPG. Netgear Orbi and TP-Link Deco can do VLAN ID.

I recommend Asus Aimesh routers. Have got them at home and they work exceptionally well.

You can get the dedicate aimesh option like the google nest wifi or just get any 2 asus wifi router that's aimesh compatible (virtually all of them at this stage) and connect them up.
