I've got a legacy Google Apps account that I wanted to migrate across to something free. With the various offers elsewhere for paid lifetime hosting, I wasn't comfortable not having some control over the underlying infrastructure. Working at Oracle, I wanted to look into their free tier as an option to move my services.
Fortunately, I came across a Youtuber, Ideaspot, who documented the use of Hestia running on a VPS through Oracle's free tier using Ampere (4 OCPU 24GB RAM) along with 100GB block volume storage.
Some benefits mentioned by Ideaspot:
- Runs perfectly on ARM, allowing us to access up to 4 CPU and 24GB ram FREE
- Simple and friendly interface
- Easy app install, 1-click WordPress
- NGINX Caching for fast webserver performance
- No limits on number of domains, websites or mailboxes
- Easy mailbox setup, easy to add SMTP relay to provide improved deliverability
- Default security setup is very solid
- Auto updates by default
I had a friend recently signed up to Oracle trial. The Sydney "domain" is out of stock of the always-free ARM processor instances. Last I checked, it is still "out of stock". Avoid signing up to the Sydney "domain" if possible because you can't change it after you select your home "domain".
I have my own server running on their free tier, so far so good, no complaints. Their free AMD instances seems to be super slow, so the only useable free tier instance is the ARM processor one. Also, some linux software do not have the already compiled version for the ARM processor. You may have to compile them manually from the repository.
