Good price on all MacBook Air models in all colours from Amazon.

Officeworks also matching price but not all colours stocked in Melbourne at least. Umart also has deals at a similar price.

EDIT: Officeworks is actually $1649 for 512GB for all colours, so it's cheaper than Amazon, not sure what shop it's matching though as Umart has different prices for different colours

Fantastic laptop, really happy with mine.

    • Do you find the lack of ports is a limiting factor?

      • My use is fairly basic so not really. Email, browsing, video, some spreadsheets or office apps. To be fair a lot of laptops could do this well but I like that the battery lasts ages, screen is great, keyboard is great and build quality is fantastic.

        No issues for myself either.
I actually used the usb-a to usb-c adapter from my samsung phone to get around that issue:)

      • I have a windows laptop and only use the USB-C port on it even though it has other available ports.

USB-C hubs at work and home let me use 1 plug for all connections including power.

Also you can get USB drives and portable hard drives or SSDs with USB-C cables especially now it’s becoming fairly common.

    • How many external displays does it support, would you know?

      • I have the i7 version of MBA and it can support up to 2 external monitors + its own display = 3 in total

That being said, the fan becomes really loud when using GMeet or Zoom for meetings.

Hoping that this is not an issue with the M1 model though …

1 external display support for M1 Macbook Air. The not so good DisplayLink hack/workaround is available if you really must have more.

        • Thanks.. I guess this wont be suitable for me then as I require multiple external monitors. at least 2.

@Ninja9: It's possible to hack around by getting a dock with DisplayLink support, generally not cheap. Bear in mind that those USB-C/Alt-mode MST based hubs/docks are for PCs only.

The clearance DisplayLink deal on OZB one or two years ago (USB-A one), I think doesn't support 4K. It's hacky and you need to install some drivers and every time there is an OS upgrade, you tend to need to wait for new driver from DisplayLink.

Let's hope Apple fixes that with M2 (though it requires either a re-design of the GPU or put more GPU cores in M2 vs M1). Don't get your hopes up though.

There are plenty of DisplayLink docks available. There is nothing hacky about it. I use a M1 MBP with a Dell Display Link dock to connect to two external displays. There are no issues with it.

      • Only 1 external display. You can have up to 3 or 4 with a DisplayLink supported dock (don’t confuse with Display port).

I'd go this route - flybys + cash rewards + edu store free air pods.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/685778

Actually this price seems higher than edu store?

    • I guess it's for people who aren't students? What is the flybuys trick?

Apple education or AOC doesn't require you have a student ID inorder to make a purchase, so technically anyone can access and buy.

      • Buy gift cards and get % in fly buys, it's in the link.

Apple doesn't actually check if your a student from all reports.

        • Picked mine up in store with a mate and they didnt check our IDs either

    • Definitely the better way to go.

    Does this matter though? https://youtu.be/YrmpG8ET5I4

I don’t really understand the technical side of what they are talking about, but they did mention that particular issue is only relevant in the desktop products which don’t have a UPS to sustain power after a sudden shutdown.

Not sure how common this issue actually is, but it probably isn’t an issue for most people most of the time.

    • +1

Didn't watch all of it, but not an issue for almost anyone I think. Sounded like the issues were found when trying to install Linux on an M1 mac, so might not even be relevant at all when running macOS, which 99.999999999999999999% of people will be doing on these…

  • Can anyone comment on this macbook air compared to an old macbook pro 2017, if it's worth changing?

    • +1

The general consensus seems to be that they are much faster, and the battery drain is dramatically lower.

      You get fewer ports though.

      • I saw some apple marketing that said m1 chip was x3 faster?. powerful?…. I dont know the metric they used.

Biggest changes for me, coming from a 2017 Air and 16” (2019) Pro, are the following:

      • Performance - very snappy - handles browsing better than my desktop/16” Pro

      • Heat - doesn’t produce any noticeable heat for general tasks - great when using on the lap

      • Battery - very good battery life in most tasks, especially browsing, and no/low battery drain in sleep. When browsing content-heavy websites, the gap increases significantly.

Screen will be slightly dimmer than the 2017 Pro though.

    • yes, intel Macbooks are just not comparable at this point.

  • This or iPad Pro? Assuming it's a one or the other decision? Hmmmmm

    • +1

It really depends upon your use case. Due to the software limitations of iPadOS, the MacBook Air has far better flexibility.

If you're a creative professional that needs portability and have the right workflow, then an iPad Pro could work.

If you just want to watch Netflix in bed, surf the web and do photo touchups - then I would go for an iPad or iPad Air.

    • Doesn't sound like you're seriously considering one or the other. But if you are, they have entirely different use cases. Get the iPad Pro if you plan to use it on the sofa, for entertainment/browsing, final photo touchup (Snapseed), or if you plan to use the Apple Pencil 2 for drawing/graphic work. Otherwise, get the MacBook Air. If you don't need portability, a Mac Mini would be even better, because it has better specs and it's cheaper.

  • I see the price is $1649.00 which is same with Officework

  • Unless you are desperate to purchase one, you are better off in waiting for the new macs to be released

    • +1

Your statement is also correct even after the new macs has been released.

  • Awsome laptops, I have had mine for about 6 months now. Fast, good battery life, very portable! The only negative would be the slightly dimmer screen, which can be hard to see in full sun, I mostly use mine in a office, so not really an issue for me.
