I want to buy a new game and i havenarrowed it down to these two.
I know its a personal choice but i am keen to get your thoughts on what you recommend more and why?

Reading from other forums people say you need to play it for couple of hours and then it gets better.
If you have no experience with any souls borne, I’m sorry but this game probably isn’t for you.
Yeah, I agree.
Souls borne has been out long enough that it attracts a certain sort of person who is willing to stick it out long term to learn the combat, the environment paths, enemy behaviour, etc.
Also, the plot is delivered atmospherically if that makes any sense - through NPC sentence dialogue, item descriptions, etc. It's not done explicitly to grab your attention. The plot is just there in the background if you really want to dig for it.
But perfectly understandable. I liked Horizon Zero Dawn. I'm impatiently waiting for my copy of Elden Ring to arrive but will play Forbidden West as well when I get the chance.
As for Elden Ring - can confirm. After the first boss kill, it gets more interesting.
I think if you enjoy a challenge, like finding secrets and don't mind dying a whole heap of times then you might like Elden Ring. The bloodstains and the messages on the ground make the game feel a little less lonely and bleak.
little less lonely and bleak.
Sure but there's also the whole summoning aspect of it. You could summon 2 mates and explore the entire world if you wanted.
@ChillBro: I was talking about the 'lonely atmosphere' that I think is quite typical of souls games - where 'friendly' npcs are far and few between, when compared to a lot of other popular rpgs.
But agreed, if you are literally lonely and/or are struggling to kill things, summoning can be an option
HFW if you played HZD and enjoyed it.
Elden Ring if you played Dark Souls or Demon's Souls and enjoyed it.
Nothing else matters.
I've played HZD and enjoyed it but never played dark souls or Demon's souls.
Then Elden Ring isn't for you. Try Bloodborne (free on PS+ Collection) or one of the Souls games before you consider it.
Oh, then you will hate Elden Ring lol.
Better be sure you like Soul's like games before getting Elden Ring. Horizon certainly is easier to recommend, despite the high quality of Elden Ring
Should maybe set up a poll but my vote goes to Elden Ring. Haven't been able to stop playing since getting it on Saturday.
Had you played Dark souls etc previously? If so, would someone that hadnt enjoy the game.
P.s. i have setup a poll
I have so it's probably a bit biased haha. I think trying out new games/genre is always good especially when it's a masterpiece like Elden Ring. Another point to consider: Horizon is singleplayer whereas Elden Ring is multiplayer. IMO multiplayer games should be picked up early so you don't get left behind whereas the former can be put on the backlog for later/when the price drops more.
I have both, like both.
Elden Ring is going to be a shock if you aren't used to Dark Souls. It doesn't hold your hand and can be pretty brutal at times, down right cruel sometimes (i.e. the chest in dragon ruins sending you to a much higher level area that you can't warp back from until you manage to find a new bonfire).
Progress is easily "lost", and you will die a lot. It is part of the game and being able to accept that.
Horizon is a much more forgiving game, but is still a bit tough in parts if you get in over your head. Similar to the first so far for me.
Think I'll play Elden Ring for a while and then get back into Horizon once I have more progress.
I'm loving Forbidden West, souls games require a lot of time and concentration to progress whereas Forbidden West is relatively easy, you don't need to be in a certain mindset, and it's very colourful and visually amazing and detailed.
I have both, I would say watch some reviews or streams to make your decision. Very different games, but I'm enjoying Elden Ring more. Horizon has more polish and is definitely and easier game to pickup and play casually.
Accidentally picked the wrong one. OOPS!
You can't go wrong with either.
I'm playing Elden Ring first, because I love me some From Soft. I will play Horizon next, because I enjoyed the first one. (Loved vs liked).
I was going to say to get Elden Ring first, because it is a third party title and first party Sony titles are super expensive, but it looks like you can actually get Horizon for slightly cheaper now.
Elden ring best game ever
Elden Ring will be brutal since it's your first souls-game. It's a bit of you'll love it or hate it (or both) genre and since you've never tried, it's a bit of a risk
Horizon Dawn will be more enjoyable if you're just after an easy to pick up game and since you've played the original you know what you're in for.
I personally think Elden Ring looks like a much more interesting game. From what I've seen it looks like an absolutely stunning and intriguing world to explore.
Defs Eden Ring
Also, a tip to get Elden Ring for $59 - buy 2 cheap games and trade them in and pay $29 for the game at EB. I went to JB and got 2 games for 30 for this deal. TLOU2 (ps4) and Crypt of the NecroDancer (switch) for reference.
Same offer is available for Horizon, I believe.
I think its 49 for Horizon, ps5 it is anyway - might be cheaper the ps4 route?
You have to pay $59 (after trading in 2 games) for the PS5 version, and $49 for the PS4 version. A lot pricier than Elden Ring.
If you've played Dark Souls and/ or Bloodborne go for Elden Ring otherwise go for HZD. Elden Ring is very difficult if you're a casual gamer and you'll end up very frustrated. I made this mistake 7 years ago when I chose Bloodborne over Witcher 3… had a really crappy summer.
Im wishing I bought Elden Ring from EB instead of digitally. It would certainly be going back for a full refund. Ive never played Dark Souls or Bloodborne, come to think of it i may have played Bloodborne & returned it.
The high ratings are BS. There is a steep learning curve & little assistance or tutorial. Its the only game I remember playing which needs prior knowledge of the franchise
It doesn't need prior knowledge of the franchise. But every From Soft game does draw strong reactions one way or the other.
RIP.
I don’t think you’d be able to return a used game back to EB games but you could certainly resell a physical copy.
Also this isn’t part of the Dark Souls franchise strictly speaking but definitely uses key design decisions. The game doesn’t require prior knowledge of FromSoft’s previous games. The first one you play will always be the hardest because of the steep learning curve
EB have a 7 day return policy.
First and only fromsoftware game I tried to play was Sekiro. Realised not long into the game that I do not have the patience, reaction time or any skill whatsoever to play that game so I stopped and haven't touched any of their games since lol. If you have any souls game in your library I recommend trying to play it and see how you do.
Just because I want the ego boost, I feel inclined to say that I felt the same way about Sekiro the first time I played it. I even sold it out of frustration. Then I got the urge to retry it, now it's one of my favourite games of all time. I've completed it countless times even with the hard settings activated.
Definitely not a good entry for Souls games though.
These games have literally nothing in common other than both being open world. If you played Horizon Zero Dawn and enjoyed it, get Forbidden West. If you enjoy games like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, get Elden Ring.
If you haven't played one of the other, it's fairly simple:
This is a great reply, thanks. I will download bloodborne today and check it out. if i dont like it i will just go with HFW
OP just like yourself, I doubt there are many people who have played both games enough to reliably recommend either. It's just a matter of personal taste.
I intend to play both, but as a massive Dark Souls fan, Elden Ring will be in my console for at least a few months. I think any gamer owes it to themselves to try it. It's the flagship game of a major developer. And no, you don't need knowledge of the series to jump in. Many people say Elden Ring is the easiest of all FromSoftwate games because the open world allows you to skip any fights or areas and just return later on. This is part of the game's appeal. It rewards exploration by making it much easier to progress.
ER is definitely a good game for series newcomers. It's not like Final Fantasy or some other complex Japanese series where you need to have played the previous games 7 times each just to know wtf is going on.
You also have to think about replayability. With an overt story and limited combat variety, Horizon is probably a game you can play once or twice and see everything. The sheer size of Elden Ring coupled with the different classes, weapons and build variety make it endlessly appealing even if you're playing solo. Replaying it with a different class (ans choosing different routes in the world) will make it feel like a whole new game.
Have both and find Elden ring very boring. Tried over the weekend and yes, very very boring.
