It's cheap but it doesn't whiten. You need the Colgate Optic White with 3% hydrogen peroxide for that. Usually on offer for $7.50 and worth it.

You convinced me… gonna give this a shot. Sick of my dentist commenting on my green tea drinking.

      • +6

        This 3% one: https://www.amazon.com.au/Colgate-Whitening-Toothpaste-Hydro…

It really does work but remember you need to keep the paste on for a minute or two to let it do it's thing. Think of soaking dishes.

        • What do you mean to keep the paste on? As in not brushing them?

          • +1

@pparanoidd: As in don't brush and spit it out straight away like normal toothpaste. Make sure teeth have decent toothpaste coverage for a minute or two to allow the hydrogen peroxide to act.

          • -1

@pparanoidd: The best way to whiten/brush your teeth, is to clean your mouth thoroughly (gums, sides, tongue) with your standard cheap paste and brush. Be vigorous and make sure you get all that gunk out. Then do a quick water rinse and garggle with Alcohol/Mouthwash. You'll feel fresh.

Now that you're essentially "done" apply a very small amount of expensive whitening toothpaste, and gently apply it to your teeth. Do not rinse it out, leave it on, head for bed and go to sleep. Most of the harm to your teeth/mouth happen when you're sleeping, so that's the most important point to disinfect/clean. And to "whiten" your teeth, it requires time for the active ingredient (usually peroxide) in the paste to actually do its job.

Compare that with the "standard task" of your 30 second quickly brushing in the morning, teeth only with some gums, and rinse it out immediately without mouthwash. There's a pretty big difference, and you can notice it after 2+ weeks that your mouth is getting healthier and teeth are actually getting brighter.

            • @Kangal: Ug….are you not going to be swallowing a portion of that toothpaste during the night?

              • +1

@Borg: Probably, but it is safe to do so. They have been tested.

              • @Borg: Then you can also whiten your oesophagus.

              • @Borg: Regardless of whitening my dentist told me you shouldn't be rinsing with water after brushing anyway as it gets rid of all the fluoride that protects your teeth. I was told to just thoroughly spit after and not drink or eat for 15 - 30 minutes.

                • @Sneaky Minx: That's correct but in this instance is saying "leave it on, head for bed and go to sleep."

To be honest, it isn't something I would do with toothpaste that contains peroxide i.e.coat teeth and go to bed. For the most part is harmless (to most people). It can however make some people's gums sore or if teeth have any cracks, peroxide can seep within them and potentially cause pain/sensitivity if left on for long periods. Best check with dentist I would think before leaving toothpaste with peroxide on teeth overnight. Might be fine for some but not others.

Thanks for your comments. We're going to give it a go. :D

        • I suspect there's some chemical in it that not only whiten your teeth but also hurt your teeth and gums. Any one can advise otherwise?

          • +1

@lily99: Yes, the hydrogen peroxide is the bleaching chemical. I'm not a dentist but 3% is the safest level readily available and should not cause any issues or irritation. Anything higher than that (e.g. 6% Phillips Zoom) needs to be provided by a qualified dentist/consultant.

            • @Hybroid: Great, thanks!

            • @Hybroid: H2O2 gives me mouth lesions, happened with both mouthwash and this toothpaste. YMMV.

          • @lily99: It's called peroxide. Some people are sensitive to it regardless of it being harmless for the most part.

            • @Borg: I see, thanks for letting me know!

    • 2nd that. Only toothpaste I use. Its also half price at Woolies at the moment.

    • Does it make your gums sensitive?

  • +1

This toothpaste made the inside of my mouth sore and hurt my gums, now I'm stuck with 3 tubes of it

    I wouldn't recommend

My mate who's a dentists said not to get any of the whitening toothpaste for two reasons.
    1) they dont work
    2) they are abrasive to enamel in comparison to normal paste such as colgate total etc.

    fluoride toothpaste… No thanks?
According to my dentist, not required

    • +1

Whereas my dentist can't get enough of the stuff. Eg Every visit ends with my teeth bathing in fluoride foam, unable to speak….

      • just ask for a non-fluoride treatment.. much more pleasant :)
