  • If my Rancilio ever shits the bed I hope a deal like this is around.

    • +4

Our Rancilio machines will be running long after we are gone :P But yes, these are good looking machines too!

      • Hasn't skipped a beat so far, ill be ok with it lasting forever!

        • +1

          Which Rancillo do you have?

        • +1

Just don't do what I did once and make a few coffees right before heading to the airport for a month-long trip and forgetting to empty the water in the drip tray… The base of my Silvia ended up rusting out to the point the drip tray actually got stuck. Found out the hard way that's the only real weak point of the Rancilio Silvia

      • The Silvia was my first good machine, sold it for almost what I paid for it after 5 years to upgrade.

        • What did you upgraded to if I may ask?

          • +1

@wjojff: Twice now, but that upgrade was a rocket Giotto which I had for 9 years and sold for about $2k, beautiful machine held it value and would last a lifetime.

    • That would be an enormous downgrade my friend.

    • Rancilio shits all over this, not even in the same class imo.

      • Yeah got mine second hand and love it. Wouldn't replace it unless it was beyond repair.

        • Theoretically it will never be beyond repair. Keeping mine for life

        • Do you mind disclosing how much for second hand? I’ve got a breville bambino pro, which I feel like I’ve put grown.

          • +2

@ozaym: Ofcourse not, I bought it for $700 and it came with the rancilio beans grinder.

From what I can tell it was roughly 3 years old.

            • @Fooah: That’s a good deal, did you mod it? Or going to?

          • @ozaym: Also thinking about upgrading from my Bambino Pro. Unsure what I should upgrade too though…

            • @coastbargain: If I had money… I would get La Marzocco Linea Mini 😂

Otherwise Lelit or Racillio Silva pro or pro x… but probably go to one of the coffee machine store to check it out.

I feel going from bambino you’d have to go $1-2k machine to get some significant difference.

      • +1

        what model?

        • Yes, what model? I want to start looking into these Rancilio machines. Thanks

        • +1

I think you can’t go wrong with any of the rancillio Silva, pro or pro x. Pretty sure you can mod the PID and the pressure thingy?

    • +1

Even if it shits the bed it should be relatively easy to fix

    • My Rancilio is coming up on its 10 year anniversary of daily use and it still hasn’t missed a beat. Even the grinder is bullet proof, it’s probably chewed through 150kg of beans.

      • Have you done anything to maintain the grinder? I was told to run dry rice through it to clean the blades

        • +1

I take the burrs out every couple of years manually clean everything. There’s videos on YouTube if needed.

        • Don't run dry rice through it please. If you must clean the burrs, run actual burr cleaning tablets through it.

    • I've had my V1 Silvia over 10 years. And pretty sure it wasnt far off 10 years years old before I bought it. It hasn't missed a beat. I can see the machine needs a haircut and a shave but it is one of my favourite purchases ever.

  • Thanks, been waiting on a Classic Pro deal :)

  • +5

Looks pretty nice, have your checked to see if they've listed it on their eBay store as you might be able to snag an extra 10% off using AfterPay there. Won't be quite as cheap but I'd bet many more people have access to AfterPay than ZIPpay/UniDays.
If nobody else has I'll try to find it myself when I get home. Tx OP

BLUE MODEL FOR $619 less 10% AfterPay discount ($557.10)

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Gaggia-New-Classic-Pro-Blue-…

    • +1

That's a good deal, but you only need a Zip account to be able to access the extra $80 off.
You can also stack with the refer a friend coupon for $30 off (but I'm not sure how that works exactly).

I can confirm the new user coupon for $20 off works, so the price will come down to $509 if you include the Zip offer.

  • +1

Someone tell me what is so special about the pricing. Aren't they like $689 everywhere.

    • +2

Well that would be $80 off then, probably a good deal?

  • +2

Worth doing the OPV mod if you get this, night and day. Unbelievable that gaggia optimise for some shitty pods rather than the 9 bar for people who'd want proper espresso who are most of the market for this machine.

    • +1

Yep inexpensive mods turn this machine into a beast.

      • +1

Inexpensive? a 9 bar spring, a pid will take this sucker upto 900 bucks not to mention void the warranty and still there wont be enough clearance for a tall cup and neither will the wait time to heat up decrease nor will the PID be accurate.. A Silvia is a better buy..if looking at Italian build and simplicity ..a bambino plus may not last as long but is a way better buy than this any day for someone starting out and unbeatable value through TGG commercial or a Breville dual boiler for 800-900 would be a smarter buy for an advanced user

        • I see they've discontinued the BDB and replaced with one that includes a smart grinder for c.$1500!

Is there one that can be recommended similar to the BDB without grinder?

          • @jpwwong: Its still there without the grinder. That deal is a push by the big box retailers.. Hang around and it will pop up on flea bay or hardly normal with discounts if that is what you want. BDB plus grinder is not Breville..its the retailers

        • I was going off the previous thread where upgrades were made for $15 but I could l've been looking at a different upgrade.

        • I didn't bother with a PID for mine, just put a thermo block from a capsule machine before the main boiler. This makes the temperature much more stable than a PID ever could.

        • +1

A 9 bar spring IS an inexpensive mod though. They weren't talking about the PID. Also, this machine is going to outlast any Breville by a long shot

        • You can get the parts yourself for about $60 from aliexpress, rather than ordering the kits locally.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAtsuS6B6xg

        • Whut? Cost me less than $100 for DIY PID, parts from ali express and jaycar.

  • +3

I’ve read up about many machines. The Breville Dual Boiler simply cannot be beat at this price range, until you get up to like $2-3k.

The only good thing about these machines is the ‘prestige’ of an Italian/solid build.

    • +2

And availability of parts to repair them. Call Breville and ask for some common parts

      • BDB has a very detailed repair community and modding community, I have also called up breville multiple times to get replacements parts to my BDB, they have provided them with next day shipping.

        Breville has amazing warranty also.

    • Breville dual boiler does seem to be very impressive when it's priced below 1000. Aren't they moving towards the "dynamic duo" so dual boiler won't be sold on its own? Bit frustrating if you already have a grinder or want a better grinder than the SGP. I'm finally ready to spend the 8 or 900 on a Breville dual boiler but I wonder if I've missed the boat or just need to bide my time.

      • +2

BDB is sold directly to stores at two times of years, this is at EOF and at Christmas/Boxing day.

You will see sales that line up with this time from the major sellers.

        • Great thanks for the info!

    • +3

Read what you like. I actually own 2 BDBs, one died after warranty and one I’m still using with extended warranty. They are just not built to last. Go to their warranty agent like espresso fix in Balwyn and you’ll see heaps lined up for warranty repairs. That said, the features are fantastic and they offer relatively okay value for money provided you are prepared to throw it away after five years.

I keep the classic pro as a backup when my BDB is in the shop getting fixed. It is an extremely basic machine, but very reliable, and I would only ever use it as a backup not a primary.

      • Breville recently fixed up alot of their parts to last a bit longer in the BDB, it will no longer kill itself if you do the descale "feature", and they have changed steam boiler o-rings with an o-ring-free tube nut arrangement. This should fix 2 of the biggest problems of the older BDB's.

This was about a year ago/2 years ago the changes happened.

They have also recently updated their documentation to try improve the longetivity by suggesting regular maintaince.

If your interested in fixing your old BDB theres a discord where theres probably some of the most knowledgable people on the insides of the BDB

        https://discord.gg/HUR7C8ksZe

        • Thanks. This is really helpful info. My last machine was fixed by Espresso Fix in Sept last year so not sure if they retrospectively put the new arrangement on? My current machine was from November 18 so perhaps I missed the update (it has the Claro filter for what it's worth).

My older BES920 is probably 5 years old, no Claro filter. I've kept in clean storage, and was thinking exactly that - to get the old girl running again, so I'll def check out the links you have provided.

          • @apu: I believe the change to the tube nut was about 2 years ago, maybe 1.

  • Any good prices for good entry level grinder to go with one?

    • +1

Eureka Mignon Specialita from Espresso shop is the best you will get in Aus.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/667771

      • I've got a Baratza Sette 270 and it does a great job

    • Seriously… any halfway decent burr grinder is a good starting point. Yes you can readily push up to 400-500-1000 for a grinder and these can definitely be worth the upgrade. But if you're just starting there's nothing wrong shelling for a Breville Smart Grinder Pro (often on sale for ~150) as a start point, and work up form there. I purchased a Breville for about $150 and flipped it after ~12 months for $100 on Gumtree, so you don't even really end up much out of pocket.

If you have the extra cash, by all means start higher with some of those suggestions others have offered as they are significantly better.

  • +1

Costco Auburn had these for $549.. there was a pallets worth if remember correctly (went there on Tuesday)

    • $509 is the price with $20 off code as new user + $80 off zip

      • Hey TEER3X, where did you find the $20 off code as new user?

        • It's when you sign up to their newsletter, they will email you a code

You can get $30 off if you're referred by a friend or family member, so price comes down to $499 I think

I just pulled an earlier model of this out of my roof space after 10 years of storage!

It had been superseded by the groovy pod machine of the day which made getting my caffeine fix a lot quicker an immediate when dealing with young children / school and off to work.

10 years on, my teenage son, now a budding barista was telling me what he had learned at casual job and how ‘crappy’ the latest iteration of our pod machine really was.
So, not to be beaten, I retrieved my Gaggia from deep storage only to find it in almost the same condition it was put away in.
The only issue I had was the water pump was not picking up, not surprising after 10 years in the roof, but a quick prime of the pump and away it went - like new, same seals, same everything, Oh, I did have to replace the steam knob on top that turned the valve on and off – for less than $5

My son was pleasantly surprised, as was I. He's been working with a 20k commercial machine so it was a compliment.

    And he was right!

    REAL COFFEE again!

Pros – makes a great coffee, wont die, last forever, survives deep storage.
Cons – this model was a single boiler (I’m assuming this model is too), so time your coffee shots and be a little patient when steaming the milk as it comes back up to temp, but its worth the wait.

It’s still in use and I love it.
I now have two coffee machines in my kitchen (apparently one one is real) and the Gaggia is certainly my preferred now I have more time

    • +1

Ah, the joys of parenthood. Was it really worth 10 years of mediocre brews, only to now have someone ready to brew a good cuppa for you? ;-)

  • If you're looking to mod, you can get the parts yourself from Aliexpress for about $60

  • +1

No "my $89 Kmart coffee machine can do the same thing" comment?

  • -4

    Pods are so much easier!

How much more, and what's the quality like compared to a automatic coffee machine?

I like coffee, but it's like food…I don't like cooking or wasting time lol

    • +1

If you're using pods, you're essentially drinking stale coffee
But it all comes down to how much you like coffee, if you just want something brown and warm, pods will do
If you're a coffee nerd like some of us, pods are only preferable to instant

    • +1

That's like saying a $3 wine is no different to a $50 wine

      • -1

Highly doubt it, and most people on here with $900 coffee machines are the same people buying $5 wines.

        • This comment makes no sense and assumes the world

  • +1

Once you move to DIY roasting, you too will realise you are drinking stale coffee.

    • 15/15/15 rule

Within: 15 months green beans, 15 days roasted beans, 15 minutes ground beans

Local roasters can definitely provide fresh enough beans

      • It's a rule of 3s, according to most roasters and bean retailers
3 years green, 3 weeks roasted, 3 minutes ground

  • ha ha - yes it was, but making up for lost time now.

  • I love Gaggia and Rancilio - their history and performance speak for themselves. Please make sure to get a good grinder - this is a complete game changer for me.

  • What makes the main difference between the standard classic vs the pro?

    • There is no standard classic in their current catalog, the classic pro is the sole version of this machine :)

      • I’m using the old classic so I’m guessing it’ll be the same then?

Frothing Nozzle has improved by the looks of it similar to the rancilio

        • Improvements on the old model include a 3 way solenoid valve for the group head and a new steam wand

  • dang it, i bought a breville and used it already. i would love to have this machine, so much sexier.

  • It is better than the Breville bes870? I have this machine for 2 years now and is it better to stick to bes870 or replace with this?

  • I want a machine that cleans itself completely with 1 button, no chance I'd clean this out for 1 cup per day! Any recommendations or tips on easy cleaning?

    • Google 'backflushing'

      • Back flushing helps but it's no substitute for regular cleaning

  • What's the next level up from Silvia (any brand)

    • +1

Rocket, ECM/Profitec or Lelit heat exchangers- however they're quite the jump in price

      • Yeah seems to be quite a large jump after the Silvia!

  • We've been using a Saeco Via Venezia daily for fourteen years. Nothing has broken yet.
I know it is an entry level machine so I've been looking at a Lelit Anna to replace it. Anyone have any experience with these?

  • Breville Dual Boiler was my first coffee machine, I couldn't grow to like it and sold it off, I went for a Gaggia Classic afterwards and discovered I much prefer making coffee on the Gaggia Classic.

  • Is this deal still available?
    Thanks
