Looking a lot better than Woolies this week

  • Thanks Sam,the Coles man.

  • Half price Rustica pizza… mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

    • -1

      Which flavour do you recommend?

      • +11

Doubt he'll be able to answer your question… His m key seems to be stuck

        • Better than a typewriter with a broken 'e'.

I think the English equivalent is "groin grabbingly transcendent".

That or his reply was written by a dog…

      • If only someone did a pizza review like this guy

        https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgCC6NPFaGw7j1kYhCvi3_A

        • Shut up Leonard! I found your YouTube page. What's the point of reviewing frozen pizza?

          You're talking about it.

  • I need to spend $50 at Coles this week for worthwhile Flybuys points. However none of the specials are good to me

    • +2

I buy products that do not go on sale including the generics and hot smoked/smoked salmon.

      • Coles generics are pretty good!!

        • +2

If I was in this situation, I'd stockpile:
          1. Coles soda water
          2. Coles muesli (toasted nutty)
          3. Coles tinned beans

and buy the weekly bottles of milk.

          • @Charlie Dont Surf: What is it with Coles soda water being so popular? (Like not Coles brand specifically, but are we a nation of sparkling water drinkers now?)

            • +1

@wavesgreen: I'm a relatively new convert and am now hooked, especially in a record-heatwave summer like we've had here..

$1.45 for a 2 litre bottle. Bit of an expensive habit lol. I never thought I'd be buying water in Australi but here we are.

              • @Charlie Dont Surf: All my friends overseas drink sparkling water but I've never been a fan. I do buy the Coles brand 'Que' Cola though. It's actually a pretty decent taste, a bit more caramel-y than Coke, and it holds its carbonation far better.

                • +1

@wavesgreen: Yes, my GF converted me, and she is from overseas lol

It definitely does provide a nice "lift" on these hot days. I'll be less inclined to buy it during winter.

Saw a bloke buying a big box of the Aldi cola last week. Made me curious to try a bottle if there is a zero-sugar variant. Have you compared it?

                  • @Charlie Dont Surf: Unfortunately I don't have Aldi near me. Which is a shame as there's a bunch of their stuff I'd like to check out.

                    • @wavesgreen: Bought a bottle of the Aldi Cola (No Sugar) today. 95 cents for 1 litre, so 5 cents cheaper than Coles.

Haven't tried the Coles "What" Cola, so can't compare the two. But this also has a more distinctive "caramel" flavour than Coke Zero. In a blind-taste-test, I reckon I'd correctly identify the Coke Zero 99 times out of 100.

This will be a one-off purchase.

                      • @Charlie Dont Surf: The Coles 'Que' cola is $1 for 1.25L.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Aldi one and the Coles one are bottled by the same company. There's been a few examples of this happening between Aldi and Coles before.

EDIT: The Woolworths own brand cola is more neutral-tasting as I recall, it's been a while since I bought it. So not so caramel-y but I seem to recall it had more of a strange chemical-y odour and aftertaste.

                        • @wavesgreen: Oops, just checked. Aldi bottle is also 1.25 litres. Agree with you that they could be bottled by the same company.

                          • @Charlie Dont Surf: The Woolworths own brand cola is very similar too although slightly more neutral-tasting as I recall, it's been a while since I bought it. So not so caramel-y but I seem to recall it had more of a strange chemical-y odour and aftertaste. But I feel it could be bottled by the same company too.

                  • @Charlie Dont Surf: In my experience, it is a little sweet but then it's cheap. I rather enjoyed it and got hooked on their orange fizzy drink

            • +1

@wavesgreen: lol i'm pretty sure i'm that one weirdo who always gets sparkling water with my macca's

i like that it's a bit fizzy when i need a kick and struggling to get my daily intake on plain water. can't always be drinking coke zero either, or adding staminade to my water.

              • +1

@tdw: TIL MacDonald's sells Sparkling Water

                • @wavesgreen: just don't go to HJ's and try to order it…i overheard some guy's drive-through order

                  • @tdw: Haha yeah I just checked HJ's website to see if they sold it too.

                    • @wavesgreen: they're so behind the times lol….i'm waiting for the frozen sparkling water with bursties

          • @Charlie Dont Surf: Coles tinned beans are tasty but their "Made in Italy" label is questionable, as the actual growing country is not disclosed…

            • +1

@Fobsessive: All the big supermarket brand tinned beans are made in Italy, they have a huge canning industry there along with actually growing them. I'm sure there's some kind of imports going from places like Greece, Turkey and Northern Africa, etc.

YoPro ice cream isn't even close to the real ice cream. Each to their own though.

    • To be fair, they don't claim it to be ice cream. They refer to it as a frozen dessert on their packaging

How the hell are kettle chips now $5? Who the heck would buy them at full price!

How the heck are kettle chips now $5? Who the hell would buy them at full price!

    • yea its crazy, noted that few weeks ago when half price listed at 2.50.
There quality has gone downhill in the last months, we used to go through few packs a week minimum.
they are not worth it now.

      • Yeah I only ever buy them when they are half price and even then just one or two packets compared to 10+ I used to get.

    • +3

i know some people who just chuck whatever into their trolley without checking the price. then at the till, they don't even know their total without the checkout op telling them. you could tell them $500 and they'd cough it up.

      • +1

I love the people who spend $300+ and then tell the checkout person they don't need the receipt and walk away.

        • +3

my mother preys on these people to clock up a shitload of flybuys points….she'll sidle up behind someone with a massive trolley load, then "remind" them to scan their flybuys points. most of the time they'll reply that they don't have flybuys and let her scan hers instead. apparently some coles staff really hate this and have told her to stop. others DGAF, so she always goes to where those sympathetic checkout ops are working and does her pointscraft there lol.

tl;dr that's how we ended up with so many freaking melanine bowls, masterchef pots/pans and knives…oh god, she actually gifted some of those melanine bowls as wedding gifts last fortnight cringe

          • @tdw: Oh I thought you were going to say she follows these people out of the shop and sees if they throw away their receipts away and then scoops them out of the rubbish bin.

Because you can add your flybuys later onto any receipt that hasn't already had flybuys scanned.

…if your Mum wants to expand on her pointscraft…

            • @wavesgreen: she used to check trolleys for dumped receipts and have them added to her own flybuys or ww rewards account but it got too time-consuming waiting at the service desk so she doesn't do that as much.

              • +2

@tdw: Any checkout person can do it for you at any manned register.

          • @tdw: Your mother should be admired, true bargain hunter. Great strategy but this is only worthwhile if there is one of these giveaways at the time. Otherwise, $300 spend only accrues $1.50 and increases the spend on bonus points offers, although you could always have extra accounts.

  • Interesting, for the second week in a row, NT has no ice cream promotion.

    Bye Coles. Hi Woolies

    • NT is actually getting ice cream specials? I thought NT and WA were basically being denied because of the cut rail link.

      • Rail link to Darwin has been fixed couple days ago. Trains has been arriving since late last week

        • Were, past tense.

    • +1

Alot of NT food has has to travel massive detours. Just look up the news if you aren't aware.
Lucky to get as much as you have on shelf rrslly

      • Food shortage is pretty much over for NT now. Darwin are quite well stock since 3 or 4 days ago.

Ice creams shelves are fully stock up as well, just without promotion. Woolies kept the ice cream promotion on all along.

  • $10 Coles eGC bonus for Vodafone Starter Pack deal upon activation.

  • Why is canola oil gone up so much ?

    • Canola prices are pretty high

  • +2

Did anyone else notice that the normal price of Pepsi has gone up? I only buy at half price, but that's higher now too 😥

    • Same with Coke. And same with heaps of other items!

    • +1

Prices creeping up on many items, even the "sale" price is higher

    • they're either jacking the price of something and/or reducing the amount you get. e.g. potato crisps used to be $1.75 on special for 175g, now it's $1.87 and sometimes it'll only be a 150g packet.

  • Do the Serena ready meal need cooking? They might be good camp food/bike trip food/leave in car at work food.

    • No doesn't need cooking, it's designed to be eaten cold straight from the bowl or you can choose to heat it up. Never had them myself but a nutter hiking friend of mine who seems to live off tinned sardines, pilchards, etc, when out bush, eats them.
