Monitor Warranty Replacement, Keep or Return "Broken" Monitor

Hi, so I have received a monitor (from one of the eBay deals posted hear a while ago but I won't mention which one) and have found after using it for a while that it starts to flicker when connected to my MacBook Pro through usb c.

I have contacted the monitor brand, did all the troubleshooting to try and correct the issue with support, however they have decided to send me a replacement monitor through warranty.

The thing is, the monitor is actually mostly fine, only flickers occasionally, and is yet to flicker when connected through HDMI, so I'm not entirely sure if it's actually the monitors fault, or more likely something wrong with Mac OSX (as I have researched and found this has happened to many people who have tried to connect usb c monitors to their MacBooks).

My question is a hypothetical situation as I will return the monitor.

However, after receiving the warranty replacement, can I just keep the old monitor and still use it, even if they have requested me to return the monitor in the box that the replacement comes in?

What are the likely consequences of this? Will I lose any warranty? Will I be blacklisted from this brand? Will I be sent a bill? Is this against any laws?

What do you guys think I should do?

Not sure why you won't mention which one.
    Dell S2722QC?
Mine did exactly the same. MBP 16" connected by USB-C. Replaced it and the replacement has never flickered.

    Return the RA.

Unless they specifically said that you didn’t have to send the faulty one back (obviously not the case here), you will likely recieve a bill for the replacement later (could be in few months time), and rightfully so.

I was in the same boat (S2722QC): the flicker started pretty soon after I plugged in my 2021 16" MBP into it (USB-C). Setup a ticket with Dell, then it went away for a few hours. Came back with a vengeance…and has since never come back. So cancelled the replacement.

Flickering has never happened with the Surface Pro 7 (USB-C) I've used on it for months prior. Nor with HDMI on another device.

Edit, actually read the OP to the end: so, company asks me to do X. I don't do X. Company goes 'oh no - we never anticipated someone would like, keep things we asked them to return. I guess we just let them have it'.

    Seriously?

The least worst thing is you send it back or you pay for it.
The worst thing is they change their policy for consumer monitors so you have to send the original back first.

  • Think of it this way: say you keep the faulty monitor and sell it for 10% of cost price - profit to you and bigger loss to monitor manufacturer.

Imagine if all customers were arseholes. Prices would go through the roof.

So, you're asking if you should return the (maybe faulty) monitor after they send you a new one, or if you can get away with stealing the monitor…Have I got that right?

      Sounds about right.

  • Cheers all lol, will be returning the monitor, was just kinda curious about what would happen

    • They'd charge you full price for the replacement monitor, most likely.

Idontknowwhy this is a question that needs to be asked…

  • Errrr…most companies get you to send it back first before they send the replacement: if it’s the other way around defs expect a invoice to be sent to you 😂

If they ask for the monitor back send it back.

If they say keep it, keep it/sell it/throw it away, do what you want with it.

    Simples.

  • I'd assume it is part of the warranty fine print that you do what you are asked, not sure how this goes legally I my ANAL opinion is this would be a civil case not theft. Seriously though if a company decides to be nice you reciprocate, they have sent you a replacement trusting you that the fault exists rather that forcing you to return it so they can inspect. Do the same if they ask you to send it back then send it back if they ask you to smash the panel and send a photo do that if they just want you to cut the power cord congratulations you've just got a second HDMI monitor for the price of a kettle cable.

I had a replacement from Dell. They said they would pick up my old one, I boxed it up ready to go but nobody came to pick it up, that was 7 years ago and I haven't heard anything since. Apparently this is common.

    • Nope, they picked mine up.

Same thing happened to me lol

My question is a hypothetical situation as I will return the monitor.

    So why we here?

However, after receiving the warranty replacement, can I just keep the old monitor and still use it, even if they have requested me to return the monitor in the box that the replacement comes in?

Have they requested it be returned? If so, of course this is what you should do.

What are the likely consequences of this? Will I lose any warranty? Will I be blacklisted from this brand? Will I be sent a bill? Is this against any laws?

They will chase you for it, harass you, etc., etc. Pending what you may have agreed to and supplied, they may have an avenue to charge your credit card directly. They certainly have the ability to issue you with an invoice for cost and then chase you via all the normal debt collection activities.

What do you guys think I should do?

So, you want to think you're a good person by "mentally" returning the monitor, but are happy to "actually" keep it if enough people support that point of view? Come on, man.
