    Thanks OP!

Blows my mind that there are 128GB models of phones that cost $1500 or more. Seriously at that price point why wouldn't you have 256 or more just in case.
I understand many people use the cloud &/or offload their images to a laptop/desktop device but it's still crazy to me. But clearly if they are able charge an extra $200 for the 256 and god knows how much more for the 512 then I guess there's no incentive to just have a basic model that covers 80% and then maybe a 1TB for those users who need it. I'd bet the difference between 128GB and 1TB at a production level is at the very very most $50.
Given how long these devices last do you think in 3-4 years time 128GB will be enough if video resolutions, app sizes ect keep increasing?

    • +10

I made this mistake… i got the 128 because at $1700 it was already crazy expensive. Now I'm having to plug it in to the computer every few months to delete all the photos (backup up in cloud) to make room.

      • +17

I just have google subscription for $25 year (100GB total), and photos automatically goes to Google photos as original quality. the Google AI is great to find photos of any type quickly.

        • apples 50gb $1.49 subscription is better value but I guess its about the same per gb over the 100gb

          • @srhardy: install google photos for ur pictures atleast..has 15 gigs free

      • +3

Yeah I'm in the same boat I find I'm regularly over 100GB and have to clean things up and I rarely take photos. For me it's mostly screenshots & downloaded videos for watching offline on the train to and from work. But I've got friends who love taking photos everytime they go out our get something to eat ect one of which was regularly filling her 512GB iPhone.
I wish there was a tech company who just built devices purely so they provided the best outcome for customers even if that meant leaving some profit potential behind but hey if they did that their shareholders could technically sue them for not maximising profits. Ah capitalism hey, creates so many wonderful things but there's always a catch lol

        • -2

I wish there was a tech company who just built devices purely so they provided the best outcome for customers

What does that even mean in that instance? You want a 5tb hard drive in your phone?

          • +12

@ShouldIBuyIt: No I mean I want a 256 as a base model and a company that doesn't add a bunch of options where in production cost differences are tiny bit profit margins are high. I want a company that uses USB-c because it's best for clients to be able to use Universal products rather than increasing profits with propriety connections that it charges companies to use. I want a company that strives to reduce costs instead of sinically increasing prices regardless of whether there are increased input costs.
            "What does that even mean?"
Nothing mate! Go Apple! Whoo Yeah!

            • +7

@Clarky77: Ha, right. Looks like what you really want is an android phone tho lol

          • @ShouldIBuyIt: The cost to Apple between 128 and 256 is minimal

            • @WhyAmICommenting: Could you donate me that minimal amount of dollaroos? its only $168.00, Surely should be quite minimal for you right?

      • +3

We are in 2022 and you still need to plug your phone in your computer to make room? You must be doing something wrong.
Doesn't iPhone provide the capability to clean up once backed up?

      • -4

Friends I know use the Facebook trick.

They upload a bunch of photos to a private album only viewable to yourself and use that as a cloud storage.

Of course there's a whole problem with Facebook having a crapload of your photos on their "cloud" so yeah.

        • +1

Your friends should get a pixel phone. Unlimited free storage.

          • @ShouldIBuyIt: Umm .. a pixel 2 or one for the unlimited storage?

            • +3

@D3m3ntia: Pixel 1 gets original quality backup free for life.
Pixel 2 to 5 (I believe) get storage saver quality backup for free

Now what does that mean? I'm glad you ask:
We renamed our High quality storage tier to Storage saver. While we’ve updated the name, your photos and videos will continue to be stored at the same quality.

If a photo is larger than 16 MP, it will be resized to 16 MP.
Videos higher than 1080p will be resized to high-definition 1080p.

I personally take my pics/videos on my pixel3 and sync on my pixel1 dedicated to pics backup/711 chopper.

        • +11

          Facebook downscales photos horribly

        • +7

thats a terrible idea. Facebook compresses the hell out of the photos.

        • +5

With the numerous low cost services available (iCloud, Google, Dropbox, Amazon), there is no reason to compromise with a free service that significantly downgrades the quality of the photos you upload.

      • Now I'm having to plug it in to the computer every few months to delete all the photos (backup up in cloud) to make room.

I just pay the $15 for 2TB iCloud and turn on Optimise iPhone Storage option in Settings - Photos. We have about 1 TB of photos and I only have a 64GB iPhone.

    • +10

It blows my mind that anyone pays this much for a phone, full stop.

      • +5

Reminds me of a comment I read elsewhere

        https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29801947

Everyone was jealous of the next level up. I was making 300k and my high school hometown friends were like "holy cow, you're so lucky this is amazing, you have your own apartment" meanwhile I was annoyed I couldn't keep up financially with my trust fund boyfriend who had $3 million a year to piss away with random trips to Bermuda. My CFO was jealous of the Principal who could take netjets and didn't have to fly first class everywhere. The NetJets guy was jealous of the billionaire principal who had his own jet. That billionaire was jealous of the main money dude who had family money inherited from the crusades

        • +3

Yeah but the he's not jealous of anyone buying this expensive phone. He's only stating it's bloody expensive.

          • @HandsomeMonkey: if you realise that "its expensive" is subjective. to someone earning 6 digits or more who doesn't have other expenses, it's barely a fraction.

it's only when you are barely making rent and food, and still go after things like this, it becomes a problem.

that's capitalism for you, they charge as much as the market can bear.

some people are happy with a nokia 3G brick phone, some people want a diamond encrusted gold phone.

it really depends on which target market you are. for those people complaining about it being expensive (when there are plenty of good cheaper alternatives around), chances are, they are not the target market to the seller.

This isn't even about getting the cheapest deal.

            • +2

@slowmo: Yeah and? It's on Ozbargain and not many are earning 6 figures salary in here. So the phone is still expensive for what you get..

              • @HandsomeMonkey: then don't get an iphone if you can't afford one? it's ozbargain, not ozcheapestphone.

get an android phone, cheaper and better specs.

                • +1

@slowmo: Hahhaa do you always assumed that people who don't buy iPhone can't afford to buy one? What make you think Android phone are cheaper?

                  • -1

@HandsomeMonkey: if you are complaining it's expensive, that means you can't afford one? If not, what is there to complain about?

You get to control whether to get a cheap android phone, or an expensive (in your words) iphone. it's not like you have to buy it like fuel/electricity/water.

don't shift the goal posts, you objectively have a cheaper android alternative that you can get that would have similar hardware specs to an iphone. if you are comparing flagships, then why complain about expensive phones?

just complaining for the sake of complaining?

                    • +1

@slowmo: Hahhaa, it's an expensive phone for what it is. Stop being a sheep. Your making yourself too obvious..

I am not complaining I am only stating that it's a bloody expensive phone.

                    • +2

@slowmo: I just bought an M1 Mac Mini, 512GB for $1250. It's the most powerful computer I've ever used. And it's tiny, a fraction of the size of the big PC tower next to it (which is much slower).

Insane that this Mac Mini is $500 cheaper than an iPhone 13 Pro Max. What do you need that for? What can you do on it that justifies the price? I got a 2nd hand iPhone 8 for $200, and it does everything I need, and has a brilliant camera if you know how to use it.

But what bothers me the most is Apple's almost evil obsession with starting their base models with a ridiculous amount of storage. I'm talking iPads with 32GB, iPhones that cost over $1000 with 64 or 128 GB storage. Or Mac Mini (a desktop computer) with 256GB. Really getting sick of it. Grow up Apple.

                    • @slowmo: Imagine thinking the only reason not to waste money on overpriced items is that you can't afford them.

        • I can't reply to everyone here:

My point was that there is a relative version of expensive as someone already pointed out. But your comments suggests you can't even imagine that someone, anyone, in their right might would afford 'an overpriced phone'.

Some examples: why would you buy a BMW? My 2003 Corolla gets me there just fine? Why would you fly business class? You still get there right?

Also the famous phrase: if you have to ask how much it is, you can't afford it.

The reverse is also true: you can't believe that people would actually skip meals because they can't afford it.

          It's your perspective.

          • @ozbargainsam: I think you're almost entirely missing the point. I could easily afford an iphone, but it would be the equivalent of taking $500 and setting on fire, because for $500 less (or probably more like $1000 less) I could get a phone that does everything this phone does just as well. I think you'll find that on the whole even billionaires don't just throw money down the toilet for funsies.

            • @caitsith01: And I think you're missing the point.

Why pay double for an OLED TV? It does things just as well as an LCD, right? And yet, people don't complain about TVs as much as phones.

Luxuries, ever heard of them? They're nice things. Their cost doesn't have to match their utility. Going out to eat is a luxury. Going to Maccas is, too. Literally any holiday is a luxury. Making a donation is a form of luxury.

I think you're showing your naïveté if you think people with incredible wealth literally don't waste any money.

Edit: it's a mindset depending on how you grew up. It's fine. One generation might've been the hardworking parents, giving their kids every opportunity. The parents might either want the kids to enjoy the fruits of their hard work, or they might impress on them that nothing comes for free and be very mindful of spending habits. Neither is wrong, but it's a tell. I'm from a bit of both camps: I understand the value of money, but I enjoy spending it on things that are just pure fun. You might call it 'flushing money down the toilet' but I have a nice phone, or that was a great holiday, or that dinner was unforgettable.

Edit 2: also, a billionaire that's worrying about saving a few dollars via CR or SB, or a few hundred bucks on a phone. That's like, wow. I mean, I guess they could ask their personal shopper to do it for them.

Edit 3: should summarise this down to: the wealthier you are, the $ amount that bothers you to save increases. Worried about next meal. Worried about car repairs. Worried about paying for holiday. Worried about private school fees. Worried about the cost of private jet fees.

              • @ozbargainsam:

Why pay double for an OLED TV? It does things just as well as an LCD, right?

I mean… no. An OLED is clearly, measurably superior to an LCD in almost every respect, and not by a small margin. So you start from a false premise.

Likewise your Maccas example, eating cheap take away is not a like for like substitution for a nice restaurant.

The iphone example is more like, you can pay $5 for a Big Mac or $500 for a Whopper. Oh shit, I'll take the Whopper, I'm rich everyone!

                • -2

@caitsith01: You're clearly missing the point if you're resorting to hyperbole.

OLED is better in a very distinct way (contrast and black reproduction) that people who can afford this luxury spend a lot of money for. If you don't care for it, then it seems like a waste of money.

iPhones also have unique qualities that people will pay for. I won't explain here because I doubt it'll make any difference to you.

We're off track anyway. The richer you are, the less you care about trivial things like saving small amounts of money. You get what you want. It sucks you can't.

                  • @ozbargainsam: So your entire argument is now "better things cost more money", which is absolutely not the point under discussion.

                    • @caitsith01: That's just the example I'm using, since the other analogies don't seem to be working.

Apparently you're on about this mythical Android phone that's the same as an iPhone but $500 cheaper. Sure, if my time was free and I hated myself.

My original argument up top was effectively: there are gonna be things you can't afford. So maybe people are happy to set $500 on fire, maybe it's because they can. Jealous?

                      • @ozbargainsam: Right, so we get down to it - you're just an Apple fanboy, it appears. No point arguing, then.

                        • @caitsith01: Sure, I like Apple hardware. I'm invested in it and it takes a lot of effort to move ecosystems. But let's not get distracted on personal strawmans.

Again, to turn things back to the original point: the dollar cost of something has variable value to different people. If it's a phone, next holiday, car, whatever. Deeming it 'blowing my mind' or 'fanboyism' is naïveté.

      • Problem for me is the camera. If I could get this level of camera without the fancy processors and screens etc I'd absolutely buy a cheaper phone.

    • +4

Only have 128gb and have 30 years of photos/videos and 5000 songs on there, and plenty of apps with room to spare. If I need to I can remove the downloaded photos and/or the music and switch to streaming if I somehow run out of space. In terms of photos and video, people often have many extras they don't want, and never spend time culling them. I only take short videos, and cull my photos soon after I take them.

Phone manufacturers count on you spending more for higher storage, hence why they charge a lot more, the "just in case" scenario. In the internet age there is less need for local storage.

    • +1

5 year old phone with 64GB. Just reached 80% storage , with the recent surge being down to bloated QR tracking soft ware required to comply! I suspect the phone will not be upgradeable to the latest 'put level' or th battery will die before I run out of storage.

      • Which "bloated" check in app are you using? I checked the QLD, VIC and NSW apps and they are all under 100 MB.

    • I got the 256gig 12pro and after two years only used 67gig of my phone, tone of games, photos, and 4k videos. I do pay $4 for iCloud and have it all on there. For years I was against paying for iCloud and now I wish I had done it earlier.

      • +1

After that this comes out: Iphone 15 in just approximately 7 months ….. and so on

        • Haha not sure about 7 months but they do seem to keep shortening the gaps between releases lately.
Not sure why you being negged though it's a valid point imo even if it's a bit overexaggerated.

      • -4

By the way, since 2007 Apple has release 33 models of Iphone, which equates to around 2 models every year. So any iphone you buy today will be considered an old model(previous model) within 6months by apple.

        • +2

Multiple models release at the same time like last year, iPhone 13 mini iPhone 13 iPhone 13 pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. You do get at least 5 years of software updates before they consider your phone 'old', but even then they do release some security updates and the phone is still usable.

      • …and 16 shortly afterwards.

I hope they become collectible one day FML yeeesh

You should keep an eye on those lith-ion batteries. They could easily swell/leak/catch fire/explode. Highly recommend charging them all every 6 months

        • +1

Lithium-ion batteries are best kept at storage voltage (I think around 40-50% charge)

      • Yeah my drawer a bit the same hahah. Collection of phones iPods etc over the years.

    • I purchased the phone two weeks ago, the lady at my local JB is very nice and refunded me the difference.

      You should definitely try it.

  • +6

Call me crazy but phones are stupidly expensive for the average joe, $1700 for a device that most wont have in 3 years seems nuts…

    • +3

get an SE Samsung if you're on a budget

        • +1

Cause $630 for a phone is definitely being on a "budget"

          • +2

@ShouldIBuyIt: compared to 1700? it is. he was saying that is expensive, so this is a great alternative for having near cutting edge features at the lowest price. or get a xiaomi note if you cant pay 630

          • @ShouldIBuyIt: The thing is if you go to cheap they won't last and you'll just have to replace it every year. Where as once you are spending $500-$600 on either a flagship that's not been popular or a 1 generation old Android you can feel pretty confident that you'll get at least a few years of use without apps crashing ECT. So in a way it's cheaper to spend $500-$600 than $200 over time.
You can get good quality s10 series for $300-$450 and they will still get another Android update next year to 13 plus they'll still get security updates a bit longer and they have enough ram and processing power that they'll keep working a couple years beyond for 95% of stuff. Personally I keep devices until they stop getting OS updates but I have friends who keep them until security updates stop (usually means you'll lose Google/Samsung Pay & some internet banking apps ECT) unless the batteries really suck of course but my S10+ is still going strong so I'll see what next year's phones are like before I worry about upgrading.

    • +1

usually used for 2 years and sold, you can get about 500-1000 depending on condition and age for old iPhone.

      • 3 1/2 year old XS Max 256gb are still going for $5-550. iphones retain value quite well.

    • get a xiaomi

    • Yeah prices are just getting stupid! But marketing people have figured out the higher the sticker price the more people perceive it to have "value" even if they rarely sell for that price with discounts, cashback, trade-in offers ect ect.
But Apple are the masters at not allowing old stock to be sold at a discount and as such lower it's value they'd rather destroy it than sell it at cost. It's kinda brilliant and probably why Tim Cook just earned $130m this year and Apple is worth $3 trillion.

  • Iphone 14 is coming, that is why these 13 model prices are dropping

    • +1

Not with 7 months to go, much more likely tech share prices dropping recently causing this. Trying to maintain share price.

    • +7

$1769 is for a phone is classed as dropping?

      • below $1k is a sign that the iphone is in run out……at that level still in profit generation mode!

  • I think the latest iPhone SE is being announced Mar 8th. Depending on cost vs features, I might pick up one of those.
    https://www.macrumors.com/2022/02/04/iphone-se-march-event/
