    amazon au wins

  • Nice!

I probably lost a few bucks <$10 in total since they started with this.

You could have still purchased discounted Amazon gift cards with your Visa and got around it that way? Get 3% or so off in the process.

      • LOL. I never knew Discounted Amazon Gift Cards exist! Either I got it for free (Westpac deal) or I got it as part of Amazon promo but never thought I could buy discounted Amazon gift cards.

      • Are you sure you can buy them with Visa credit card though?

        • Buy it from shopback? Or other rewards platforms?

  • +2

Whaaaaaaat? I've been using Mastercard so never experienced it.

But y'all saying you gotta pay a surcharge for Visa payments? What a joke!

    • +2

      Only since November 2021. 0.5%.

    • Yup even those ZIP one time disposable card incurred a surcharge.

the little guy wins against visa ;)

    • So you're saying Visa is a midget? :)

  • +2

    Oh FFS!
Excuse me while I go and reconfigure my payment methods again.
Thanks for wasting my time Visa and Amazon

    • I wonder why Amazon started charging the surcharge in the first place.

      Was it:
      - Visa increasing their fees, or
      - Amazon asking Visa to reduce their fees and then Visa calling their bluff.

      • Most likely second one,
to facilitate massive price beating of groceries of Coles/Woolworths

I just went through an approval process to increase the limit on my Master card specifically for Amazon shopping, what a waste of time.

Sounds like a lot more effort and waste of a credit check compared to just purchasing discounted Amazon gift cards with no fee and loading them onto your account.

    • Actually I also went through this process back just before they introduced the fee. I benefited by getting Amazon credit of $20 by changing also I found out that my bank would charge no yearly fee on CC which is also a rewards card as my home loan is with them and then they started giving me all these credit bonuses so it has worked out well for me. Sounds like you were a bit late to the party!

  • This is what happens when big business gets greedy. I guess you could say that was happening either way in this instance.

  • Suprised Amazon dont just buy paypal or another 3rd party provider

    • +1

How would that help Amazon? They were trying to negotiate with Visa to lower their fees for Amazon. PayPal still pays the Visa fees.

      • Remember Australia and USA are backwould not supporting phone credit we can use to spend on things to protect banks and visa/Mastercard. I mean we can't even buy a coke with my bus ticket like in Japan and Europe.

We are basically restricted to paypal…
Anything that puts pressure on the big players is good.

        • Coke and bus ticket doesn't make sense. Care to explain?

@OzCheapo: I think they mean you can use your transport prepaid card to buy other stuff, like in other countries.

        • Japan expanded the use of transport cards because their debit card or credit card usage was exceptionally low. (mostly cash society)
In Australia, we never needed to use anything but Eftpos, and now paywave/paypass. Think we're heading to expand transport to just accept debit/credit cards instead of having own dedicated transport card.
QLD started trial, not sure about other states.

        • Paypal is in a very competive market space. Payment processing has heaps of competitors and if you're a big player like Amazon you do your own.

Card schemes, banks and payment processing are all seperate businesses and functions and you seem very confused by which one does what

  • how did I never noticed?

      Ozbargain license suspended?

      • 🤣

    • pretty sure you had to check the box once and from then on it was just red text stating the fee

  • +1

Lmao that was short lived. Here’s hoping they have another promo for adding Visa cards back as a payment method like they did with Mastercards.

  • Ok, I will put my visa Card back then.

  • Good. Now Ill have to go and put back my credit card. More of a nuisance than anything. They mustve lost a fair chunk of money for them to reverse this decision (a bit like the previous GST reversals)

  • Great! Now I can stop paying on Zip, then immediately paying my Zip with my Visa!

    I just pay cash…

  • "payment experience"

    • Code name for "making Bezos richer"

    • Making getting reamed feel nice

Thanks Visa for all the Mastercards deals - Amazon, SB, etc.

    • +1

We really cashed in on those deals.

  • I never got lugged with the surcharge. Looks I didn't miss out on anything. ;-)

  • Viva la visa

  • +1

I mustn't have bought anything on Amazon from November to February because I would've seen the surcharge otherwise.

Ah nvm I did but was with a VISA debit :)

    • +1

Same here been using a visa debit for the longest time never got a surcharge…
