Innovative Men's Wallets

So I've been on a bit of an EDC journey recently and come across a lot of innovative wallets, sadly which most aren't available in Australia - got to import them in.

The Ridge, Aviator, Dango, Akeeni and Trayvax come to mind, anyone else has had one of these?

Good luck if you break or drown your phone, or just run out of battery.

Or need to purchase something where their is no phone reception.

        • Apple Pay and Google Pay don't need phone reception.

I have those except for the driving licence on phone but what do you do if phone runs out? I still have my cards

      • It's your responsibility to keep your phone charged.

        • It might. But your phone is not faillible. You'll have times where it breaks down. What do you do then?

Or when you are overstretched and forget to charge? Your wife is pregnant and you forgot to charge because you were buying baby stuff etc.. You will need a physical wallet to back up

          • +2

@Raj09: Whataboutism > your wife is pregnant and sent you out to buy baby stuff (which is silly because the baby hasn't been born yet). You lost your wallet on the way to the shop and don't remember her phone number?
You will need a physical smartphone with her number on speed dial to back up.

My smartphone can do everything a wallet can't and a wallet can't do what my smartphone do can.

@rektrading: Maybe I wrongly formulated it. You get my point though. I tried using my phone all day for payments and yes it does work and is convenient. But it works well when you remember to charge and your phone gives 100%reliability. We all forget to charge once or twice and my phone has given up on me often due to buggy software.

              😊

              • @Raj09:

We all forget to charge once or twice and my phone has given up on me often due to buggy software.

Once again, it's all about responsibility.

    • Don't you keep any cash (currency notes or coins) at all?

Elephant wallet (specifically the LR wallet) has been my go to for about 5-6 years now. Best minimalist wallet out there, imo.

Constanza taught all we need to know about wallets.

  • I went old school and got this guy to make me one.

    • So the coins are all safe inside, yet the $50 or $100 has to hang out outside tucked under that flimsy elastic loop?

      Man that is weird…

      • I think you pay extra for the note elastic loop. I would suggest most would go without it.

    Fairly minimal wallet design

I find a bindle offers excellent utility.

stopped using wallet ever since 2016. thx to GPay

    • What do you do if you don't have internet or your phone dies?

      • Watch has nfc too. Always store a $50 in my car for emergencies.

        • That makes sense. Thank you

    • I'm getting to that point. 95% of the time I don't need a wallet on me, but I do need the physical cards from time to time (eg buying on the internet and needing card details) so a good minimalist wallet to keep them tidy and in one spot is useful.

    https://secrid.com/en-global/

Highly recommend Secrid wallets. I have the slimwallet and it's perfect for my needs, as I almost never have cash. My one can hold up to 6 cards in the pop out side and 4 more inside. Also space for receipts and cash if I need. They have different designs and styles and can find them in many stockists around Aus.

    • +1 for secrid wallets. Practical and fun to fidget with.

    • love secrid.
wife bought me one and I can't imagine using anything else now.

    • Another vote for secrid from here since purchase in 2018. holds everything securely inside rather than so many of the new age designs that strap your cash to the outside of the wallet which Seems backwards to me.

  • These wallets that you've mentioned don't seem that innovative to me; they all just look like variations on the card Case+money clip. Show me something you can put in your back pocket.

  • Lol at people advertising tao bao rebrands as their wallet of choice

Check out popov leather if you want a minimalist leather wallet

  • Have a look at reviews of the new wallets esp the Ridge. It's crap in my opinion. They do have special features but it's at the detriment of function. My opinion is the Ridge or similar wallets are for people who don't use wallets

  • All a little bit tactical and edc for my taste. I got a Chester Mox wallet years ago when they were called Voodoo studios in brown horse front. Classic minimalist design if you only need a few cards.

    I just use a cardholder

  • I bought myself an Ekster Senator (shipped from US, boo) for Father's Day this year, finally retiring my decade old $10 Van Heusen special.

Am pretty satisfied with my purchase, and even months later the little clicky button that makes the credit cards pop out still makes me super happy.

  • Used to love these wallets including Bellroy .But now all I want is to get rid of my wallet and use my mobile phone only and except for handy cash (even for that if your main activities happen around the CDB or suburban centres cardless ATM can sort that out), so for day to day life I cannot really think of a strong user case for any kind of wallet unless you just like these wallets.

  • I use this:

    And this:

    https://www.victorinox.com/global/en/Products/Swiss-Army-Kni…

Awesome quality, simple form factor, great for my 6-8 cards, cash, tools and a coin or two for woolies.

  • When my friend lost his wallet he just used a rubber band to hold cards together and put a note or 2 in between. He never bought a wallet again.

  • Bellroy.

  • innovative wallets - sure they'll impress the girls when you pull out your black credit card

oh wait - I stopped carrying a wallet years ago since I stopped carrying cash after I got Apple Pay on my iPhone for any electronic purchases in supermarkets or restaurants, the Opal app for public transport, my drivers licence on the gov app.

but hey - if you want to flash one beside your $10,000 Rolex or Patek Philippe - spending money you don't have to buy stuff you don't need to impress people you don't like - sure, knock yourself out !

    • some places only take cash

      • +1

don't shop at these places .. as you know why they only take cash…

    • spending money you don't have to buy stuff you don't need to impress people you don't like

      Very flight club-esque

  • ridge = over priced Chinese wallet

As many have said, no wallet is the new wallet in this day an age

  • I use this: https://www.zeuswallet.shop/
The weight is a bit heavy but I like to know I stil have it in my pocket.

  • I have a Ridge wallet, had it 2 years now and no issues. Absolutely love its small form factor

Why are people so obsessed about carrying shrapnel and trash notes?

Businesses that accept and have cash only signs are money laundering fiat 💵.

  • I use a Bellroy card holder. And carry no cash except for the two 50s 'hidden' in my phone cover for an emergency.

Bellroy and/or their resellers need to have more specials.

Still in Oz hands I think.

  • There's this one I saw my mate have:
    https://www.carbonthat.com.au/products/100-real-carbon-fibre…

Pretty nifty, fits just enough cards and a note or 2. For those who like that carbon fibre weave.

Similar design to others but is slimmest I've used. Enough for 3-4 cards + notes and bottom card sliding out easily with one hand.

I have this varient of Trayvax, Onxy Frame black too for extra stealth - roughly 4 years of usage. Have the earlier version with the thinner strap but essentiall the same.

Overall - highly recommend this wallet

    • highly wear resistent the colour on the stainless steel frame the frame still looks immac. the metal has retained the colour only spots where there is bare metal showing is that latch section is (because you do open and close that quite often) or where you do drop it. But from normal use, super durable.

-high quality construction, just has a good overall sturdiness to it unlike the summit ones (i do own this,it causes the cards to bend). and much more practical as it also holds the cards better.

  • I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for in those examples you gave, but if it's thin and light, may I suggest something a little more classic:

    https://www.roseleathercrafting.com/products/kangaroo-leathe…

Kangaroo leather is the thinnest and strongest leather available, supremely soft and ages beautifully. I've had mine for 6 years now and it just keeps getting better.

Has 5 slots but I double up cards in two of the slots so it comfortably takes 7 cards.

Plus it's hand-made in Brisbane so you're supporting a local small business.

  • Have you considered something like a Trove wallet?

Simple, super compact, pocket friendly. I've been using one for a few years with 7-8 cards in it for cards/IDs that aren't yet available for the iPhone or watch.
