Telstra Prepaid Misleading Offer on their website, should I complain?

Go to their prepaid site and tell me how much data you think you get included initially with their $30 plan - no cheating by hunting through the fine print in the CIS.

https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/off…

If you actually sign up, you get told it's 10gb only, not the headline 30Gb. Notice how the 2GB plan to the left of the "30GB" plan specifically says 2GB in the data section? The $30 plan avoids stating the initally-included data anywhere on that page. Only if you dive into the CIS on another page can you finally discover it's 10GB only.

This is misleading at best, think I have a case?

Not sure what you're looking at as it's pretty clear that it's 30GB for the first three recharges before reverting back to 10GB from the fourth recharge onwards.

Next minute: Post unpublished by OP request.

30gb On your first 3 recharges.
    10GB from your fourth

But this is ozbargain forums and I support your right to be outraged.

It's pretty clear on mobile device
    Without going into the CIS

30GB on your first three recharges. 10GB from your fourth. New customers only.

30GB on your first 3 recharges, 10GB on your 4th…

    Isn't that what you get?

30gb for 3 times, then 10gb from then on. Offer valid for new customers only. I suppose existing customers would get 10gb every time. Am I missing something?

  • Just go with Boost

  • +1

Agree with above … 30GB on the first three hits, then 10GB after that … am I (we) missing something?

  • I think the OP was expecting to get 30GB for the first 3 months, but is getting 10gb.

If you actually sign up, you get told it's 10gb only, not the headline 30Gb.

I agree it reads 30GB for 3 months then 10gb/month, but its only for NEW customers.

    OP are you new?

The very first time you sign up as a new customer, you get only 10Gb - unlike the 2Gb plan, that 10Gb "initial data-inclusion" is not clearly stated anywhere on that page - it's only mentioned as the amount you get from 3 recharges onwards.

By putting the 30GB directly under the price and then making the rest of the sentence in a completely different font size, it gives an impression that these are unrelated offers.

The $10 plan says 2Gb directly below in the headline, and 2gb included in the terms. The $30 plan does not follow this at all, using the same headline style, but failing to disclose the actual amount included is 10GB on first activation.

By avoiding the same wording as the 2GB plan, they are expressly looking to catch you out. Otherwise, why not do the data-included disclosure in all the plans the same as the 2Gb one?

    • So did you buy a $30 SIM kit and only get 10gb included? Then you would get 30gb the next 3 recharges.

If so, have you contacted Telstra to ask if that is a mistake and you were actually supposed to get 30gb?

  • All providers do it
Optus https://www.optus.com.au/prepaid/sim-plans click on epic data plans. $30 40GB for the first 3 recharges 10GB after.
    Vodafone same thing https://www.vodafone.com.au/prepaid/plans $30 first 2 recharges 40GB. 15GB after.

So why just single out Telstra? :p

If it is your first recharge and you got 10GB and it isn't hidden under extra data because they do include it like that. Then yes you have a case otherwise unless you magically pull something then no.

Then they are all equally misleading, just like they all agreed to define a month as 28 days a while ago (Is anyone here old enough to remember when telcos actually had a month to month plan that ended on the same day each month?).

Just because all telcos agree to abuse customers the same way does not make it acceptable.

The page has a number of other dark patterns - the CIS text is not underlined the same way as all the other hyperlinks to discourage you from clicking on it. And none of the text is selectable so it can be copied.

    • I get billed each month. The month goes from the 1st of the month to the last of the month, whether its a 28 day month, a 30 day month, or a 31 day month. They bill me on the 6th of the month, or the first working day after that. If I haven't paid it myself by the 14th they charge my card themselves. Its with Spintel.

i think it's misleading.. should say 10 GB + 20 GB bonus on first three recharges.. they have obviously done it to mislead people.

  • +1

Agree that it doesn't actually say what's initially included, but it's clear that it's 30GB for the first 3 recharges (not 30GB included).
(I thought it was common knowledge to go and read the Terms and Conditions. If not, at least read the Critical Info Summary).

If you complain, they'll probably just give you the extra 20GB to make you go away, but then they might add the word "Karen" in your account notes! 🤣
