[PC, Steam] Free - Dear Esther: Landmark Edition (Was $14.50) @ Steam

3250

Free for a limited time.

Think this review sums it up nicely; "this is not a game. This is an interactive piece of art." Somewhat of a walking simulator.

Dear Esther

immerses you in a stunningly realised world, a remote and desolate island somewhere in the outer Hebrides. As you step forwards, a voice begins to read fragments of a letter: 'Dear Esther…' - and so begins a journey through one of the most original first-person games of recent years.

Abandoning traditional gameplay for a pure story-driven experience, Dear Esther fuses its beautiful environments with a breathtaking soundtrack to tell a powerful story of love, loss, guilt and redemption.

Still shuddering so many years later, good storytelling.

Would it be worth listening to just audio only?

      • +3

The visual part is needed for context.

I highly recommend this game to anyone. It should run on old hardware and all the gaming skill needed is walk forward, turn left and right, turn your torch on. There is walk backwards and zoom for the hardcore gamers :p

I think this was the first game to be called a walking simulator and the term was coined as a criticism. It could be considered a trend-setter but not in a bad way.

  • +3

dammit. another one for the pile

I promise to play all of these games at least 5 minutes each

when Mordhau dies. Mordhau is the game of the century!

yes, yes, pleased to meet you, I'm sure

    • +1

This is a very short game so get on it. I spent more time playing than nessary inspecting everything.

      • Roughly how long is a play through? Without worrying about trying to get all achievements etc? Says on Steam that the average playtime is ~90 minutes, is that about accurate?

        • +1

That sounds about right to me.

          • +1

@Loopholio: Thanks! Might actually give it a go in that case, rather than just let it rot on the pile of freebies :)

@moar bargains: @therog1 Hey I recommend the website howlongtobeat for getting an idea of how long games take. Shorter games are great these days I reckon with game prices getting very low (for slightly older titles) and the vast array of choices we have at our disposal and limited time to play. 50+ hour RPG's are getting harder and harder to justify investing in for me when for the same amount of time I could have experienced 5-10 other games.

@CornCorny: Thanks, didn't know about that one!
I'm with you - I have limited time to play, limited funds to spend, and 4-5 year old laptop. So I'm not even interested in the latest AAA's, I just want some fun that will run well on my machine and I can play single player without 4000 hours investment.

    Love this game/experience

If you like story driven games/walking simulators, i'd recommend looking into 'What Remains of Edith Finch'.

    • +2

Which I'm pretty sure was free at some point on Epic.

      • +3

I'm almost inclined to believe that all games have been free at one point on Epic

        • except Cyberpunk perhaps.

          but that time is nigh

          methinks

    • Edith Finch was memorable for sure but far creepier than I expected going in. Anything like that in Dear Esther?

      • +2

No. Dear Esther is moving, not what I would call creepy. I mean, you won't be made to play as a baby in the bathtub.

        • God that bit was devistating

          • @PompeiiGraffiti: I know right. I had to do it. It had already happened in the past. Can't change the past.

    • Indeed. What a masterpiece.

  • Walking Simulator is about the most inaccurately named genre, there is nothing about the simulation of walking in any of them. And they are all 100% unquestionably games as they are interactive.

    • +2

Guess I should note that my description is based off the comments I saw on both Steam and Reddit.

  • +2

I appreciate there is now a genre of games called "Walking Simulator".

  • Somewhat of a walking simulator.

That sound riveting… please take my money. the excitement and anticipation are running off me…

  • +2

This sounds like Home and away but in a game. Love, loss, guilt, redemption, ex-gf coming to stay at ya place. etc.

    • +3

Play the game with the Home and Away theme softly in the background.

  • keep your eyes peeled for hidden "ghosts" (not jump scares)

    • I've played this twice and not one ghost appeared :(

  • +1

Expired? It shows $14.50 for me

    • Mine did the same through the desktop app, use the deal link at the top of the page… must be on the website only.

  • Oh yeah the W key Simulator

  • I bought this game over 10 years ago and only played it for 10 minutes.

  • Played through this twice.

Amazing story, LOVED the part when you arrive at the cave.

However, before the caves, this was a slog to get through, mainly due to how slow you walk. I played it with the commentary the second time around which I highly recommend. The devs said they wanted to limit the speed as a design choice, for me, I don't believe it's a good design choice to limit that. You should have the option in settings to increase the speed for people who want to experience a game like that.

So, a slow start let the awesome game down and even though it's a walking sim, it's far too slow. When you get to points of interest, you naturally slow down to enjoy.

  • For those of you that have yet to play this game I recommend walking into the water. Keep moving forward.

  • Aight, my gaming phoenix has been unleashed

  • Has anybody tried doing a speed run of this game?

  • +2

just finished it, enjoyed, recommend giving it a go.

  • Cheers!

This was a nice escape from quarantine. Nice graphics for the time but needs an update. Wish it were longer.

  • Turns out I already own this, but thank you for posting!

I suspect I only ever bought the original Dear Esther and that the "Landmark Edition" was a free update or something?
