  • Noob here so forgive me but what does this do apart from portability compared to the original dock that allows port to a TV?

    • +7

Just the portability aspect as you mentioned. But that also allows the switch to be setup on another stand/mount which may allow for better cooling during use.

But you really have to beware of 3rd party docks as some have been known to brick Switches.

  • Looks like it's literally just the adapter, ie doesn't come with power adapter etc.

    • +3

It is. I have one and use when travelling and it has been handy. Don't have the bulk of the proper Nintendo dock. It does require power, so I carry the usb-c dock power cable that came with the switch. Also carry a short HDMI cable, so can connect to any tv.

  • I have this and would recommend. Very slim and portable for use while travelling or for a second screen.

Has the Switch bricking issue been sorted these days? I wanted one years ago but they seemed to be complete disasters at the time. Quite surprised Nintendo has never released an official travel dock for $$$$.

The Genki dock is very good - last time I read up on it there were 6 recorded cases of Genki docks bricking switches. It's great because it's a 30W PD compliant charger too, so works well with phones.
It's 4-5x more expensive than this, but is an actual charger as well rather than needing a charger to be plugged in, and is very solidly constructed with great reviews

    • +1

Yeah mate. That bricking issue is old old news

  • +2

    Bought and I don't know why. 😔

  • +3

Almost any powered USB-C hub will work with Switch, just use the genuine Nintendo AC adapter to avoid any potential bricking issues.

If you don't want something red or blue, I've had good luck with these.

    • Will a USB hub allow you to connect it to the TV with HDMI, which is the point of docking stations?

  • +17

    Had one of these.
Worked well, used it through a UPS and everything in a fully kitted out theatre room
    Worked fine playing MK8D
Used a MacBook Pro charger as the power source.
Then when I went to unplug it, it did some funny “not charging” error.
Next thing I know the switch cannot charge at all, and dropped to 0% and bricked itself.
The switch was literally days within warranty. Switch was replaced but lost progress in AC etc. can’t help but have a sour taste in my mouth for this. Would never use a third party adaptor again because of this known bricking issue - certainly wouldn’t call it “old news”
    Neg vote to warn others.

Thanks for your reply. Issue has been sorted, received a refund after returning item and discussing with Amazon chat in Aug 2021.
I wrote all of the above in the return information. Not sure if you received the feedback though.

    • How long ago did this happen to you? Was your switch firmware all up to date? Did you have the newer or older switch? Just trying to assess my own risk and see how similar my switch would be to yours when it bricked.

      • +2

August 2021. Yes switch up to date. Was the second gen switch - Mariko (bought in Sep 2020).

        • TVM.

    • Why blame the USB hub only and not the MacBook Pro charger? looking online that Apple charger can output up to 20v, that could be the reason why your switch stopped charging :)

      • +2

        Fair point.
I would have thought a legitimate Apple charger would probably be the best option.
As I understand it, all electronic devices negotiate the voltage they can accept otherwise it defaults back to 5V (or 9V for QC3.0 I think). Then current is pulled by the device being charged - sorry I'm not an electrical engineer and I know I've completely oversimplified/butchered this.
Really what I'm saying is well the hub should have prevented an incorrect voltage from getting to the Switch by negotiating the voltage. Thus I blame the hub again.
I've read online part of the problem is that the PD protocol on the Switch Dock are propriety and no one knows what's going on in there. Therefore you can't easily make a HDMI + charging hub and hence these problems of bricking the switch etc.

For what it's worth, I've plugged the Apple MBP charger into the switch itself multiple times when traveling (still do it now) and my switch isn't bricked (yet), but got bricked the first time right after using the hub… It's too much of a coincidence to ignore.

    • Then when I went to unplug it, it did some funny “not charging” error.
Next thing I know the switch cannot charge at all, and dropped to 0% and bricked itself.

Was wondering this very thing. Its often the reason I avoid these 3rd party devices. Whenever charging is involved unless it has a proven track record.

  • +3

Not worth the risk considering these can still possibly brick switches.

  • What's the best traveling dock for the switch without issues?

    • +6

      Original switch dock.

Seriously, if you want to be 100% then you have to stick with the original dock + charger

  • +2

Downvoting because 3rd party docks can brick switches. Don't risk it.

  • +3

Please excuse me, how is this a "docking" station?

It looks like an adapter cable, or just adapter to me.

    • It has a HDMI plug so you can connect it to the TV and play that way

  • +2

Don’t risk it for the biscuit’

3rd party portable ‘docks’ / ‘display adapters’ are well documented to brick consoles.

  • +3

They’ve been flogging these on Amazon for this price for months… I’d avoid as there’s a chance they’ll brick your system.

  • +3

I'm glad people have shared their experiences, I really hope no one buys this (or any other 3rd party docks/power supplies).

Instead, listen to what Bob Wulff found, it's a "shell" for your existing dock
