Gangsta I just bought one of the these and it is pimmmmmmp.

Donkey Kong is still 2D and it's bloody unreal.

      • Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze came out on the Wii U in 2014. Certainly don’t need to pay $499 to play it.

        • So what's the answer for someone who would like to play this 2014 game?

          Buy a $469, 2019 console… or this?

          • @iWan: Wii U emulation is pretty solid now. Play it on a computer if you have a semi decent one.

Heck, even Switch emulation is good now.

    • I mean…you could buy it, use it for 3 years and still sell it for at least $350….

      • -1

Doubtful. Nintendo consoles become valuable if they become hard to get. The GameCube didn’t sell well so their prices are going up. The Wii U didn’t sell well, so I predict them becoming crazy expensive soon.

But the Wii sold like crazy and after all this time they’re still very cheap because there’s so many of them floating around out there.

The Switch will be the same. Dime a dozen.

One exception seems to be the 3DS. They sold well, but are becoming expensive. My guess is whilst they sold well, they were pretty fragile, so finding one in good condition will be become harder quicker than normal for a system.

        • A 3yr old switch that was bought for 399 can still get 300 now, so I think the math checks out. Time will tell

  • oled version around $500 or old version around $400? which one makes more sense?

    • +3

That depends. Are you likely to play it mostly docked or as a handheld?

    • +3

Depends, if you're only going to play docked / on a TV there's no benefit going with the OLED other than a LAN port on the dock.

I have an OLED and find it much more enjoyable portable than my launch day switch. Battery life is better, screen is bigger, OLED looks great

    • +2

Get the OLED but cheaper if you can

Shop back or cash rewards with a sale is the best way to go

I got lucky with Kogan $100+ back with afterpay when it first came out

    • +1

The OLED, hands down. You will play in handheld mode more often than you may think. That’s where the OLED screen makes all the difference. It’s that much better.

Not to mention the much improved stand and an overall better build quality of the OLED model.

  • I’m new to switch, I like retro 2d style fighting
    games any suggestions?

    • +1

Street Fighter 2 is the only 2D style fighter you'll ever need.

  • My partner wanted to buy one. Which unit is better, portable or docked? Is OLED worth it? How easy to jailbreak it? Any recommendations for good puzzle (learning) games such as Prof. Layton and the likes? Thanks.

    • Go Gumtree to find the unpatched Switch if you want to jailbreak one. All other new ones have been patched not jailbreakable. Lite is smaller and cheaper not dockable to play on TV, normal Switch is cheaper but smaller LCD screen, OLED bigger screen but slightly more expensive. Unless your partner doesn’t play in handheld mode at all otherwise just get the OLED so you two can play on TV together and your partner can enjoy bigger OLED screen when plays in handheld mode.

      • Thanks for replying. My partner is the only one who will be playing it so therefore, we might go for the handheld one and it's priced at $329 at both eb Games and Big W.

        • Wow don’t pay $329 for a Switch Lite! That’s insanely expressive.

Look at the prices they go for on special.

          • @PainToad: Oops. Thanks for the info on previous pricings. Best bet is to wait for special deals then. Didn't realised that the handheld is called the Lite which is a knocked down version of the Console variant. How much really are the game incompatibilities between the two fornats?

  • Not much positive as before. Why?

    • -2

      Because it’s incredibly over priced.

Because it’s basically a rebadged Nvidia Shield Android tablet from 2014, that sold on clearance for $199. Yet Nintendo keeps price gouging consumers for extremely outdated technology (and why wouldn’t they when people keep buying them).

Because the console is reaching the end of its life. Why would you pay half a grand for something that’s so old (besides an upgraded screen).

      • Why you keep saying it reach end of its life?
Is there article or news saying this?

Do you know Nintendo console most likely retain its value even after a long time?
Try to buy GBA or game and watch.

Why you keep saying it reach end of its life?

Common sense. The specs are ancient by now and more and more games simply can't run on the device and need to be streamed. Third parties are going to want a replacement or at least an upgrade soon.

Do you know Nintendo console most likely retain its value even after a long time?

I addressed this above. Nintendo console become expensive if they become hard to get. For example, it's still very easy to get a cheap Wii because Nintendo sold so many of them that's there's a massive supply still. Considering the Switch has outsold the Wii, I don't see the Switch becoming a collectors item.

      • Because it’s basically a rebadged Nvidia Shield Android tablet from 2014, that sold on clearance for $199.

        This again.

        • The Shield tablet uses the Tegra K1 processor, based on Keplar.
        • The Switch and Shield TV uses the Tegra X1, based on Maxwell
        • (BTW, both are more modern compared to the PS4's AM3+, if you want to argue based on age)

You could also argue that one might be able to buy a Shield TV for ~$200. But by the time you get a portable OLED HDMI screen, and battery to power everything for a few hours, and a couple of controllers.

… Good luck trying to stay under $500 total.

The part you’re failing to mention is the Switch is under clocked to a pathetic 1.02 GHz (less than the Shield Tablet). Also, whilst the chipset technically has 8 cores, only 4 are used (same as the Shield Tablet).

The GPU is also clocked lower than the one in the Shield Tablet.

So sure, the Switch is one revision newer (by 12 months and still ancient), it’s also been underclocked a lot.

          • @PainToad: There's actually a 2 year gap between the K1 and X1's underlying technologies. Not to mention that the Switch doesn't have to worry about multitasking with a myriad of non-gaming related OS processes and apps running in the background, so just having the same numbers of cores obviously tells you nothing about how those cores will be applied in gaming.

Also, the part you’re failing to mention is that the Shield tablet lacks active cooling, which means that the real-world performance of the Shield tablet seriously suffers from thermal limitations, thus its higher CPU/GPU clocks vs the Switch is entirely theoretical. In multiplatform games that are on both (e.g. Borderlands), the Switch version easily beats the Shield tablet version.

I've got both the Switch and the Shield tablet. Good luck trying to BS me about their performance.
