Do Blue Light Blocking Glasses Actually Work?

I'm interested in peoples opinions if these glasses actually work. I'm more interested in the benefits of not interrupting sleep patterns over reducing eye strain as I usually struggle to fall asleep if I'm on the PC after about 9pm. Let's also assume we're talking about supposedly quality glasses, not some cheap rubbish. Jeez even JB Hifi sell them.

So do they actually help reduce impact to sleep patterns? (or should I just inject Melatonin about quarter past 9?)

  • Anecdotally the various night light apps definitely help me get to sleep more easily.

I'm not sure what the benefit of glasses is over the apps.

    • Does not work for me. Even if I have f.lux on Candle setting (~2400K) I'm still wide awake at 1am.

      • Have you looked at your diet?
My sleep was far from good but after I cut out legumes and grains within a couple of weeks I was ready for sleep by 21:00, asleep within 30mins and wake at 05:30 and feeling good.

I don't drink 5 coffees a day if that is what you're getting at. Why the heck would you cut out beans and grains?

@Zaxxon: Because I have a chronic health condition and legumes and grains make it far worse, a nice bonus of cutting them out was improved circadian rhythm.

            • @mapax: What's the reasoning behind cutting out legumes and grains?

              • @RecklessMonkeys: Elimination diets are common for people with chronic illnesses.

                • @mapax: But are they suspected of causing inflammation or allergy, or something else?

                  • @RecklessMonkeys: Inflammation in my case. Elimination diet took well over 12 months of cycling foods in and out.

            • @mapax: I take 5mg+ Melatonin tablet before bed each night. Works great in setting my circadian rhythm into sleep mode and has many other health benefits too.

I have cystic fibrosis, another chronic health condition….

      • Do you drink tea? I used to drink alot of tea, but now I limit myself to 2 cups a day and I sleep better (which I thought was weird since tea has alot less caffeine than coffee does).

I took one of Leon Lack's classes. He pulls a stunt every year, has one of his grad students sit in on the first lecture and pretend to talk on their mobile phone, and Leon walks up to him and pretends to be angry and smashes the phone.

      • Strewth - he's been lecturing and researching for > 30 years now - always enjoyable and informative lectures, and with Drew Dawson and Mary Morris graduating and moving on the the other two unis, there shouldn't be an insomniac left in Adelaide…

Do Blue Light Blocking Glasses Actually Work?

    Yes, they block blue light…

Whether they provide any benefit or not is still debatable…

  • The science is dubious.

The reason that you can't sleep is because sub-consciously you are not happy with what you have achieved that day, so part of you does not want to let the day go so you stay up scrolling trying the suppress the anxiety you get by the things you have to do in your life, just do a little more each day and you will sleep like a baby

This is why I always rub one out before sleeping. Never fails to satisfy.

Ow - that's not how you rub one out…

  • supposedly a waste of money iirc.

Do you spend the majority of your days indoors?

  • You could just leave night light on on your devices.
It'll save you buying the glasses.

Second article down, peer reviewed scientific articles. Probably more in there if you scroll.

  • Works for me, I haven’t seen a blue light disco since the 90’s

  • there was a guy who posted on reddit and recorded what games/social they looked at night and documented sleep for a year. Him and his GF had different results. Pretty interesting, it was posted a few days ago.

Me, I can load up a YT video and can be asleep within 2 mins, the mrs hates it.

The main thing to avoid is adrenaline, it can take a while to get out of your system. Coffee is also bad after a certain time, for me its about 7 hours before sleep. I will be tired and fall asleep like normal but it will be an interrupted sleep, coke is about 3 hours.

  • The "blue light blocking" claim of many products is completely bogus. Lenses and screen protectors which claim to block blue (but are clear) are completely bogus.

"Blue light blocking" glasses only work if the lenses are a deep orange colour, because that's what colour you see if you remove blue from white light.

If you have some "blue light blocking" glasses and want to test them, set your computer screen to show a blue background, then look at the screen through the glasses. It should appear black. If you still see blue, then the glasses aren't blocking blue.

Similarly, if your phone has a less-blue mode for evenings, and you view a blue-only image, the screen should be quite dark to the point of not seeing anything.

I have some good blue blocking glasses that pass these tests. They might work for some, but didn't for me. I tried them in the evening for a couple of months, along with melatonin, and I wasn't able to change my chronotype. Your experience might be different.

Do you understand what "blue blocker" means… are you having stimulants like coffee whilst on the computer after 9… are you playing intense action games after 9… maybe get on u-tube and seek to educate yourself….

my experience is that i got blue-light blocking lense inserts for my Virtual Reality Headset. Very different from regular glasses, definitely, but thought i'd share experience.
WIthout them i found to get a lot of eye-strain from the VR headset (a common complaint regarding VR headsets).
The blue-light blocking lense inserters seem to help somewhat.. difficult to say for sure, but i felt that they alleviate eye strain to some moderate degree
