Recommend Me Some Desktop Speakers

I have been using my Logitech z640 for many a year, however the failing cable connecting it to my PC is getting irritating. The rear left speaker no longer works and depending what contortion you setup the Orange/Black/Green connector you get some/all in varying levels of the other speakers, usually the left side goes. I can change around the speakers and they work fine on other outputs, it is 100% the cable connecting my PC to the speakers. However with the sub on the floor I am always kicking the cable and just get right side audio. Not sure if anyone can splice open the cable and repair it so looking at a new set of speakers.

I am looking for something with small satellite speakers as there is about a 15cm gap I put all my current ones in, so no bookshelfs as I don't have room on my desk. Not particularly fussed on wireless as I don't want to worry about batteries. A nice to have would be swapped inputs, from my desktop to the WFH laptop (although laptop only has headphone jacks, desktop has full 5.1). Price wise I would like to keep it under $200 and can wait for a deal if they aren't on sale currently.

tldr:

$200 cap
Small speakers
Non wireless
Preferer 5.1
Prefer multi inputs

  • Where are you? (and why don't people put their suburb/state in their profile…)

If the only thing wrong with your existing speakers is that the cable is faulty, wouldn't it be a lot cheaper to get someone to just replace the cable?

  • I am in QLD. I don't know anyone/business that would replace the cable, it terminates inside the sub. Would have to crack the whole thing open but I have almost no electrical knowledge of what to do inside.

    • There seem to be a few repair cafes in Queensland https://www.google.com/search?q=repair+cafe+queensland

(and thank you for updating your profile :-)

      • Tried the only local repair shop and they said nope can't repair/replace those cables :(

        • Perhaps they could cut off the cable and reterminate the rest of the cable inside the unit that the cable comes out of. However, if they can't or don't want to do something like that, then you're not going to convince them. Sorry I'm not local to you or I'd fix it for you. I hate to see good things thrown out when they could be easily salvaged with a little work.

I would go with Edifier R1700BTs or R1280DBs for that budget.

    Do you really want 5.1?
I've had the Logitech Z5500D as living room speakers for over 12 years….(still have them but passed down to the kids play room). Compared to edifier S3000Pro……. It was night and day, which was to be expected.

A decent set of bookshelf speakers will cr@# all over any Logitech speakers.

    • Doesn't have to be 5.1, just a nice to have.
No need for Logitech speakers, just what I currently have.

With the R1280DBs and R1700BTs, is there much difference? From a quick look from a noob I can't see much really between them.

"The R1700BT has a similar tonality and richness to the R1280DB. It provides a great mid-range tonal richness and a high-range clarity. Since each of the drivers have almost no sound overlap, you get balanced and full sound details. There’s also no distortion due to the built-in DSP and DRC. But while the R1700BT lets out more crispness and acoustic to the bass than the other model, it also lacks a bass kick." - Soundton review.

R1700BTs is the updated model with a sub out, which allows future expansion.

Also R1700BTs don't have digital outs such as coaxial, optical. The R1280BTs does.

For computer usage, R1280BTs would be my pick

  • Bookshelf speakers with some powerful low end will sound better than anything Logitech makes.

    • No need for Logitech speakers, just what I currently have.

If you want to go bookshelf, check out the Voll p44's which are on sale or their newer models.

I personally feel they are the best bang for buck speakers. Of course, they are passive and so you need an amp. If you have time, then try to get a nice used one and you will love the results. Fosi audio from Amazon is another economical option and well regarded here.

    • I think passive speakers and finding an amp and things might be a bit too much for me currently. Especially as those refurb ones are going $120 and I need an amp ontop. when I can get for $180 for the Edifier R1700BTs and I get Bluetooth with them.

Fair enough. Those Edifiers are pretty good as well.
