Any recommendations for a music streaming service (NOT Spotify).

I'm not satisfied with Spotify.
I'd love to know what a better alternative may be… especially if there is a good promo :)

*to clarify my reasons…
a lot of my favourite artists are taking their music off Spotify
+ I also find the sound quality to be average.

  • If you have apple gear, a split family plan for the apple suite is a no brainer.

    • mmm, I don't have Apple anything though?

      • +6

Well how about you clarify that in the post - and clarify what you don't like about spotify?

        • I have updated the post. It's about selection and sound quality. Cheers

          • @darkmoss: Tidal then. But music selection was lacking imo. Ymmv

            • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Cheers. It seems there's no perfect option. Just gotta do the ol' Pros and Cons list.

              • @darkmoss: Apple Music has plenty of Hi-Res albums and has special mixes called Apple Masters. If you want quality then Apple or Tidal Hi Res might be the go for you. An alternative would be just to buy CDs of the artist you like. CDs are better than normal streaming quality. Hi-Res are the studio masters which are as good as it gets, better than vinyl which is just a re-recording of the studio masters.

Tidal generally do good deals, just look at the history on ozbargain.

    • Cheers. Do they have a decent Library?

      • Haven't used them in a while, give them a go and find out?

      • Define decent??

Imo library is limited at best.
I had it for about 6 months last year

      • I switched to tidal and converted about 50 playlists over to tidal with a vast array of genres, only a handful of songs didnt sync as they didnt exist, mainly really obscure remixes or random songs never to be missed. Thats my experience, tidal also offers enhanced cd quality audio, chews through data but if you have good headphones(not bluetooth) the audio quality upgrade is mind boggling, spotify is garbage to go back to.
It is more expensive, but for the quality, its worth it imo. You get what you pay for.

Edit: ive read a source that states the library of tidal is at 60 million, the same as spotify, albeit some difference might occur. Tidal even has some exclusive artists and claims to pay more to the artist than spotify does, tidal supports the music industry rather than rip of the little guys who would make more money off cd's.

    • Bought 3 months for $2 not long ago - if that promo is still going there isn't a better time to try it???

youtube music….. Paid version comes with ad free youtube as a bonus ;)

    • +1

YouTube music is great cept no high def audio option. But can’t even tell if that’s what OP requires.

      • Their high setting is 256kbps AAC, pretty good but not as good as Spotify

    • +3
    • Really? It looks like they split it into music ($11.99) and premium ($14.99) for (music + youtube) now

      • Whoosh!!!

and who is paying those prices!?

  • Anything in particular you're not satisfied with? Or are looking for thats different or are hoping to see better? As it might help pinpoint a service that fits what you're looking for. I've used quite a few, but unfortunately I find they all end up having similar issues I have with them.

Amazon music unlimited is offering 3 month trial: https://www.amazon.com.au/music/unlimited/why-hd

The 4 month trial seems expired: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/680466

    • I like that they offer HD audio options. Plus the free trial. Thanks

  • +3

I like Deezer because it has relatively good Electronic and Indie Rock playlists & discovery
(Unlike my free trial with Apple Music where every playlist seems to end up in RnB or Rap).

  • +1

Deezer, Apple Music (you don't necessarily need an Apple device to use the service), YT Music and Tidal are generally good options; they'll all have all the pop artists and whatnot.

  • +2

I'm sharing Youtube Music with my partner, my mum and my uncle, no issues. Makes it a cheap and easy solution. I also cringe whenever I see someone watching Youtube with ads on these days, it's horrendous (I know there's other ways around it, but it's still a nice perk).

I'm kind of surprised Google has never bundled more stuff into this to make it more appealing over Spotify. They have so many services that making it like an Apple One subscription would be a good way to grow some of their stuff. But I guess the Google way is it stands alone and if they don't like it they just kill it in 12 months.

    Due to recent rumblings?

  • +3

If you already have Amazon Prime, you could try Music Prime which is already included (2 million songs SD), then if you're happy with how that goes, consider subbing to Music Unlimited (75 Million Songs SD & HD).

  • +2

Where do your favourite artists say they're taking their music? Because that's problem solved really.

    • I'll investigate, though they haven't been collectively specific.

  • +2

if you're feeling adventurous - try Yandex Music

it's basically a Russian version of google (they have search, market, taxi etc), not sure about their selection / deals and how it compares with Apple, Spotify etc - but had no issues for me

Have you tried a 20gb iPod?

    • +1

      +1

I have a 60gb ipod classic, I have no need for any streaming service.

      • If it didn’t exist back then, or I didn’t like it enough to put it on, it’s not worth listening to.

      • I'm still using a 160gb classic in a speaker dock for music in the bathroom. Rock solid for over 10 years now.

    • Good point. I don't have a good MP3 catalogue anymore though, due to reliance on streaming for the last few years. Maybe it's time to build it back up!

      • +1

You'll want FLAC. Easy enough to get hold of. It's why I always have a 256gb SD card in my phone.

  • +1

YouTube music works fine for me (and the 5 others that use the family account).

And via an alternate country sign up it's incredibly cheap.

Assuming it has the musicians you want, its cheap enough you'd be nuts not to at least try it for a month or 2 to see if it's good enough for you.

  • We've got ourselves a Neil Young fan.

    • +1

It may surprise you Brendan, that 1000s of artists have left Spotify.

      • +1

It doesn't really surprise me actually, as apparently the streaming services pay peanuts. You didn't deny your love for Neil Young though did you 😉

    • +3

I would think there would be more leaving due to disliking Joe Rogan (or for what his show portrays) than for missing Neil Young

No difference than people not wanting to buy Gillette razors due to a tv commerical, or picking a different item due to the company behind it or their practices.

      • +3

Yes, cancel culture is truly amazing, don't like what someone says, try to get them fired or otherwise shut down. Especially amusing when coming from Neil young. People are so tolerant these days.

(Before I get accused of doing so, no, I have never even seen or heard an episode of Joe Rogan podcast). Just can't stand cancel culture.

        • +7

Yes, cancel culture is truly amazing

choosing to move your funds/spend somewhere else isn't cancel culture.
Neither is choosing to not host your own content somewhere you dont agree with their business decisions.
          Thats capitalism.

Though I'll agree to your 'Cancel culture' being generally bad/stupid..(though neither of my above examples would be 'cancel culture')
When idiots getting worked up over things, often taken out of context, and complaining massively on social media….
Classic couple of recent examples are Dave Chappelle and Jimmy Carrs netflix specials. Take a small section of a stand up routine, out of context/out of message, and too many idiots get worked up and call for their heads..
(I think Joe Rogan falls in a slightly different realm to these two examples though.. being offended by jokes is different than spreading or promoting misinformation, though im sure there are some forming their Rogan opinions on out of context content )

          • -2

@SBOB: Trying to get him kicked off a service by threatening to leave, is an attempt at cancellation.

            • +2

@brendanm: an artist removing their music from a service due to not agreeing with their policies or business decisions isn't 'cancel culture'.

              Whats the alternative?
Just deal with it? Sorry, I know our CEO has been found guilty of drowning puppies for fun, but you cant remove your music from our service because that would be 'cancel culture'. Is this some kind of ironic level of anti-woke-ness?

              • +1

                @SBOB:

an artist removing their music from a service due to not agreeing with their policies or business decisions isn't 'cancel culture'.

That's not what happened. He told Spotify that it's either him or Rogan. That's an ultimatum. If he had just left without giving the an ultimatum, I would agree with you.

Is this some kind of ironic level of anti-woke-ness?

                See above.

                • +1

                  @brendanm:

He told Spotify that it's either him or Rogan

                  Business to Business contract negotiations.
                  Are you anti capatilism now?

If someone new at my work annoyed me so much I have the boss the choice between me or them and left if they chose them..would they be cancel culture?

As above, cancel culture in the form of social media frenzies is stupid…an artist leaving Spotify because they don't want to be on a platform with Joe Rogan isn't 'cancel culture'

                  • +2

                    @SBOB:

                    Business to Business contract negotiations.

Haha no it's not. They already had a contract. He doesn't like Rogan, so he told Spotify to choose between them. If he wasn't trying to cancel Rogan, he just would have left.

an artist leaving Spotify because they don't want to be on a platform with Joe Rogan isn't 'cancel culture'

Again, it's not the leaving, good on him if he feels so strongly he doesn't want to be on the same platform as someone, it's the attempt to silence Rogan.

You seem to be getting leaving and a "me or him" ultimatum mixed up.

  • -3

You have shit taste in music if those leaving Spotify are your go-to. Just my opinion of course. The 60s want their music back.

    • oh yeah let's pop a cap in some n——-'s ass or slap a bitch up. truly great music? & lyrics. & techno? disco at warp speed. just my opinion but.

  • Blackhole is the best if you have an android phone. It is an open-source app and available on F-Driod Store.

    • I haven't heard of this one, thanks.

  • +1

Youtube music, amazon music, tidal etc.

  • +1

YouTube music for the film clips

  • So you are happy to pay subscription for the rest of your life

    • Not really. It's just convenient for now, while living in an apartment. Rather than filling the space with my records and cds, which are in storage.
I'm curious though, why the commitment to music streaming would need to be for my entire life?
