Sorry forgot to mention this is from the US so will need to buy a converter for the plug or a Aussie clover plug lead

    • +1

Just need the Aussie clover plug lead as all power supplies are wide voltage.

Most OZb'er's would have a few spare leads lying around. They (the cables) tend to breed in cupboards.

      • Yeah that's what I said :p

  • +1

If only it had 8GB of RAM!

  • 4GB !

    • +4

      Slot's available for upgrading.

    • +2

20gb max ram allowed, add 16gb stick

      • +3

I'd probably drop in another 4gb for dual channel, unless you explicitly needed more. The amd chips normally get a nice little bump with dual channel.

        • +1

It would still be dual channel up to 8GB.

        • Agree, 8g in total should be more than enough for this spec anyway.

      • I’d go extra 8GB stick, unless you know you’d use over 12GB

    • The specs on this Acer Aspire, makes me… Perspire lol

  • -3

Beware most of laptop 4gb ram fixed on motherboard, and no extra slot. Can’t upgrade more ram. Just bought Lenovo ideapad flex 5i, $549 from Jbhifi, same issue.

    • Can add a 16gb stick in the empty slot for 20gb max

    • +10

You paid $549 for the flex 5i with the Pentium Gold and TN panel display?! WHY?!

      • Lenovo tax

        • +2

Lenovo have been well priced for the last few years. Flex 5 R5-4500U 16GB Touch etc $789 last prime day is a great example. I struggle to understand why anyone would go with a Pentium Gold, when history shows you can get Ryzen's or i5's for very little extra.

          • @Froot Loops: $220 extra (nearly 50% more!) could be a hell of a lot of money for op. Hell I know me as a uni student would agree.

Also in store vs from Amazon, and US Amazon. My folks wouldn't touch that one.

Someone could just need a laptop immediately (eg for the start of a job/school).

I mean it is better value, your link, but there are reasons why someone may buy the jb one.

            • +3

@incipient: It's just an example. There are many more examples from officeworks / HV that have been posted in recent months. Also you say 50% more, yet one is a functional laptop and the other is extremely limited being basically junk.

Also, I'm gathering someone buying a laptop with a Pentium Gold, isn't going to be comfortable with upgrading the PC themselves. Adding ram (Say $50 part + $50 labour) and then you could sell the pen with the flex 5 for $60. Pretty much closing the gap.

Then you can factor in the duration the product will be usable and also resale value. Suddenly it's cheaper to buy the flex deal above. I get not everyone has the $$$ to buy, but there is so many ways to get loans or get cash work, its not hard. Also, anyone looking at a product with a Pentium Gold that cannot spend more, should buy a 2nd hand dell

              • +2

                @Froot Loops:

                to get loans

Never ever get a loan for a laptop. That's atrocious advice. If you only have a $550 budget for a laptop, there is nothing wrong with that, just buy what you can afford.

                extremely limited being basically junk

I mean a 7505 (~AMD 3350U) with 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD, FHD touchscreen is a fairly capable laptop if you ask me. The $597 option with 256/8GB from OW is much better however. I'm not sure why the JB one is "basicaly junk" and you upvote this deal, with the only diff being a TN vs IPS; and the Gold gets a better single core score - arguably better than this 3350U! And the JB one is a touch screen/tablet, which is a nice feature if you need it!

There are plenty of reasons the JB laptop is less-optimal, but there are reasons someone may buy it, and it's hard to say without knowing their situation.

If a single parent with 3 kids, that needed a laptop 'tomorrow' for a kid starting primary school…the JB pentium gold would be a better option than anything above.

I'm just saying there are some circumstances that the JB laptop may have been a legit buy, and OP may have been in such a circumstance. Who knows.

  • Wonder if they will let you exit S mode for free like they did for Australians with Windows 10. With a ram upgrade seems to be a decent deal for someone wanting a non-touch for long periods on battery.

    • +5
    • +2

S mode is designed as a protection to novice computer users by blocking downloads. It's always been free to exit it back to normal Win10 mose but unfortunately they require you to create a Microsoft account and sign in before they will let you.

      • "S mode is designed as a protection to novice computer users by blocking downloads" is a very nice way of saying locking you into downloading from their store.

I thought it was just Australia that got out of paying the charge, but it seems Microsoft also dropped the $49 fee for the states at least (guessing it will be all countries). Wonder if they will keep it free into the future. I was only a little concerned how the software would present, being an American PC. Hopefully the built in restore also drops windows S if the user opts out and doesn't become an issue down the road.

Either way Microsoft seem to be alot more customer concerned then prior years. Just hoping they end up putting some free basic version of nuance in Windows 11

    • +2

There's an app/exe you can grab from the Microsoft store to disable S mode.

  • +3

Thanks OP, ordered one. I was looking for cheap laptop with decent screen. This is looks like a anti-glare IPS screen with 300nits, it’s crazy for the price.

    Look here:
    https://pcsreport.com/computer-laptops/standard-laptops/a515…

    Hope it runs Ubuntu okay.

    • +2

Thanks for the link. Also found a good Youtube review here.

I'm fed up with Windows as well. Ever since I installed Windows 10 on my old laptop the fan goes crazy & it crashes. Going to try Linux Mint.

      • +2

Sounds like you might need to do a physical clean on your laptop and reapply the thermal paste while you are at it. If you are too unsure about the process or your laptop is a pain in the ass design you can just download ThrottleStop and undervolt the CPU or if you are super lazy just go into the windows power settings and in the advanced plan settings put the processor max usage to like 70-80%

        • Thanks for the tips. I actually did pull it apart & clean out the dust but didn't do the thermal paste. Will have to do that too.

I also found a youtube vid about going into the advanced power settings so I did that as well which helped. But I just want to try Linux Mint anyway.

        • +1

A good clean, new paste and some fine tuning of windows and you shouldn't have these issues (unless your laptop is really old). I found CCleaner to work great for the registry, uninstalling all the junk (including antivirus, I use defender) and changing from Chrome to Edge. These few things improved my experience when I was working on a laggy laptop / running hot recently.

Also check for updates (Both with windows and via your PC makers software i.e. support assist for dell). This can make a big difference if there are some bugs. Hope you enjoy Linux. I'm considering upgrading an old laptop, just to have a play around. I hate mac, so it would be good to see Linux vs windows 10

  • +1

wish their smaller 14 inchers still had 3x USB-A sockets smdh

    • +1

I'm finding so many brands charge more for 14" than 15.6". Dell is a great example with a Lappy I looked at for a mate with the same specs, just smaller screen costing $300 extra. 15.6" must be getting unpopular.

      • i prefer 14" portability too >

only 15" if you really need numpad
even then you can buy standalone pad

  • +3

It should be illegal to sell a Windows 11 computer with 4GB of ram.

    • +1

      Windows 11S*

    • +4

if you fire up windows 11, and word and excel, it fits into 4GB ……. chrome can be a problem if you have lots of tabs, edge is less memory hungry …….. it depends on what people do and if they are willing to pay for the extra memory which can be added if needed ………

next time you fire up windows 10 or 11 check how much memory it uses , and what other things use memory, you’d be surprised how lean it actually is for common apps …..

      • Word, excel, PowerPoint are all fine, but the issue is these are aimed at student and when you start running the likes of OneNote 2016 (Now called OneNote / Not the free version) with its integration and commonly used with outlook, word, excel, it starts the struggle. I get 11S is slimed, but 4GB is starting to be a barrier (for those using OneNote)

    • +1

Agreed but at least this model has an accessible RAM slot in addition to the 4GB soldered so it's easy to bump it up to 8GB.

  • I have a 6 year old xiaomi air 13. It's still a great laptop but the battery isn't good, it wasn't good even out of factory. Will these be much of downgrade, or sidegrade? The processor speed doesn't matter that much, honestly.

    • in what respect?

      • Just in general? I just want a decent laptop to type on and wouldn't die in 3 hours.

        • +2

Yeah this will be an upgrade then IMO.
Not sure on the Xiaomi build quality but these acers are all plastic

    • It's a budget machine with simple tech and a basic screen. I have found in the last few years batteries in general in "productivity" laptops to be a lot better. I own a Flex 5 and on battery saver mode can get 12hrs+ out of it easily (I have tuned my laptop software well). In day to day with mid screen brightness I still get 10hrs.

It will always depend on each laptops specs to how well the battery will work etc, but you should be very happy if more than 3hrs is your goal. Remember also it's amazon, so although a slight pain (being from the states), you can return it if not happy or just sell it locally. If you want 14" (over 15.6") and like the idea of touch and pen, then I would look into the flex range. Build quality is fair and local deals are seen alot on ozbargain. I'm still very happy with my flex and for $200 extra, it's a beast compared to this.

You may also want to check out Amazon refurbished computers if money is tight, as they seem to offer good deals from time to time that will be alot faster for the same price. You'll also get a 180 days warranty

Using MacBook Pro 2008 15” with Win7. Running fine for basic tasks but battery is long gone. Its slow, cant run many apps, cant play x265 videos but it do basic tasks, have really good speakers and DVD player which i use sometimes make music dvd for car radio. This one have everything except DVD slot which I don’t need much. I can put music in USB as well. This one also have 15” display which i love about MacBook. Don’t know about speakers on this one. I have 250 Samsung EVO on Macbook which i can put in this one. All looking good so probably will buy it with 16GB Ram. OS these days have so many bloatwares and unnecessary background process running which i hate about new OS. They want all your data. Anyways, I’ll see in morning what to do.

    • +1

I have last year's Acer model and the speakers are a weak point.

MBP speakers do seem to be excellent so I think you will be disappointed

  • +2

I've got the previous version of this notebook (515-45).
The SSD is painfully slow (think SATA write speeds) and you'll definitely need to upgrade it to get the full benefits of an NVMe drive. You also need to have dual channel RAM to get the most out of this generation's Vega graphics so drop an extra 4GB stick into it.
Otherwise it's a great notebook and definitely worth the price including the upgrades.

    • yeah I have 2 of them too.

didn't find the SSD too bad but we're only doing Windows 10 and google sheets for work.

I did upgrade the RAM to a total of 12GB (added a 8gb stick)

      • +1

The SSD did 1500 MB/s read but only around 350 MB/s writes. When I opened it up and saw the drive was B&M key I though they may have cheaped out and put a SATA drive in mine but it is an NVMe. Put a WD blue 1TB in it and get 1750 MB/s reads and writes.

  • I suppose you can not use the USB C port for charging this laptop ?

FHD IPS and backlit keyboard is great at this price, but I can not buy a laptop/tablet that won't charge via usb c.

    • +1

Yeah, barrel charger only it seems

  • +3

So i end up buying this laptop + 16 GB RAM + AU Wire + Casio Classic.

    • how do you know it's 3200 or lower?

      • The AMD website shows support for up to 2400MHz memory.

      • I was checking reviews and guy mentioned this 8GB 16GB ram for upgrade. This was 16GB one but anyways just to be safe I’ll order 2400 one.

      • So now i bought this one

        • I think the motherboard can adjust the ram to the lower and most compatible spec?

          • @ntt: Probably but on my MacBook it didn’t work so I thought why bother when 2400 is 10$ cheaper around 88$ but 3200 is 98 after discount i think. Anyways, now least I don’t have to worry you know.

            • @Kosmo-Kramer: I'm waiting the laptop to arrive and decide which ram the best for it

              • @ntt: That’s good idea as well. It says Mar 8 in order but their shipping is much faster. So hopefully we’ll get it soon.

  • +2

i replace my laptop every 4/5 years seems to be the cycle. I have to say every single time I find navigating the hardware specs. a very hard task. It's fine if youre buying top end, but middle of the road budget is filled with spec pitfalls. Currently perusing, its like having to learn a new language each time.

    • if it was relatively top end back then, then I'm sure its fine even for today's basic tasks.
Just upgrade the RAM and change to a SSD.

      • That wont undo a bottle of water being dumped on it, stuck pop76 linux on an old box to keep going.

        • post in the forums with your use cases and I'm sure people will help.

My use case for these is basic stuff at my business (emails, MS office, web browser etc)

          • @daft009: Oh i just checked it out. Yeah, theres some super helpful peeps with a head full of specs. Great advice.

  • Is Ryzen 3 comparable to i3 or i5?

  • How much is delivery without prime?

    • That's weird I just added it to the cart and there was a "FREE Expedited International Delivery" option even though I don't have prime.

Thanks Op bought for $554.75 delivered.

      • +1

glad I could help mate ;)

  • Unfortunately, it appears that it's already sold out.

    • If it's the same as last year's model, it'll go in and out of stock.

I'm not sure how to mark it oos

      My 2 units arrived today

    • +1

It's back but the price has increased slightly

  • $577.20 now

    • Why did the price go up???

      • -1

        Inflation.

        • +1

Technology prices are meant to deflate.

      • amazon pricing seems to work on demand + lots of other factors
        always fluctuating up & down

  • $578.01 now

  • Still available at $563

    • +1

Thanks for posting this daft009. My old laptop is about 7 years old so this is a big improvement. Been using it for a while now & very happy with it. Never had a backlit keyboard or IPS Full HD screen before & it's so much better.
Not a heavy user, just general internet browsing so far.

      • +1

Glad I could help.. it is great for the price
        Did you add more ram?

        • Not yet because I'm worried that will void the warranty.

          • +2

@WatchNerd: I added ram and did have to return the old model for warranty to Amazon US. Just took out the ram and sent it back, no issues.

Got a full refund to buy something else

            • @daft009: Are you saying quality is no good! Why did you return it?

              • +2

@shoppe: In July 2020 I bought the acer 3200u model as well. I purchased 3 of them.
1 had a battery failure, suddenly the battery would hold zero charge.
on power the laptop worked fine.
we use them at work so they were always on a charger

                this model here https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07RF1XD36/

  • Under $543 now.. So even cheaper than when I posted it!

    • $566 Now.
      Looks like surge pricing.
