Still need to quarantine for one week ?

    • +5

Yep, plus depending on where you were in the previous 14 days, 3 day hotel quarantine at the government's expense. At the moment, it's hard to get a visa but you'd think that will change in a couple of months. The Japanese government will review the visa situation at the end of this month.

      • +2

they've been reviewing every month, haven't they?

      • +6

Hard to say. The current ruling faction is being squeezed by two sides but currently enjoys favourable public support to do nothing about the closed borders. In typical Japanese fashion they'd prefer doing nothing except token measures to save face.

  • +13

Miss Japan, esp winter in Hokkaido ⛷

    • +44

      How you get her number?

      • +2

these days, you just need to slide into the DMs

    • +4

Was supposed to be there in two weeks sighs have been watching webcams of Sapporo while drowning in Brisbane swamp sweat

  • +4

Sub $800 is expensive isn't? I remember jetstar had deals $350 return precovid

    • +9

      Probably with jetstar ?

    • i was thinking the same?

    • +1

      $800 BP (Before PCR)

    • +2

Not really, as JAL is a premium service airline. Similar to ANA etc

    • In a covid world, this is pretty great.

    • +13

Once you go JAL you'll never want to fly Jetstar again. Direct flight to Tokyo midnight flight and then arrive 9AM over there as compared to shit house Jetstar you arrive 6PM and making it impossible to take connecting domestic flights basically it's cost you a day already so you haven't saved any money.

      • fair, but $350 jetstar vs $800 JAL

        • +8

I use a diy raft to save even more

        • That $350 ain’t in snow/Sakura season, but would be off peak price, and what ever extra Jetstar may charge for said snowboard, that is normally included in full service airlines

      • +2

I'd much rather arrive at 6pm than at 9am even if it meant paying more (not less like in this case). Overnight flights are terrible and it takes more than the day lost sitting on the plane to recover from the lost sleep.

        • +1

My preference has been to take the overnight flights. Works better for our family.

        • +2

I'd much rather arrive at 6pm than at 9am

Same here. Book a room in the terminal hotel, then fly out first thing in the morning. No sleep loss at all.

    • +1

      What's pre covid?

  • +5

I wouldn't go for April. Nov maybe.

    • Why not?

      • +11

Still no news about borders. Not letting students and business folk in. Issues with Omicron.

        • Cheers, good point. I was thinking maybe late cherry blossom season, which would be nice. But not if you need to be inside for a week…

          • +2

@WhyAmICommenting: I'd aim for next year. Also look to Hokkaido and the North where the cherry blossoms flower later. Hokkaido is supposed to be incredible in their spring, and you'll avoid the mass tourist chaos that's going to come for the first open flowering in… 3 or 4 years?

  • -4

    NRT? lol no thanks

    • +8

NRT isn't too bad. The Narita express ride into Tokyo is comfy

      • +5

Most of their rail transport is. Tell you what though, never take the Yamanote Line while absolutely plastered off cans of Strong. Learned that one the hard way. Nightmare fuel.

      • There also bus to Shinjuku aswell which only takes 40mins

        • JR East etc is fine, but who can be bothered getting a 10h flight and then schlepping with a bunch of bags onto a train and then dealing with changes etc. I wouldn't catch a 40min bus here either. Much prefer Haneda, rent a car and you're downtown in 20/25 min depending on traffic. or get a cab if you don't have access to parking?

  • +12

If Japan opens up for tourists this year lol

  • +9

Can you get a refund or credit if Japan hasn't opened their borders for travel at the time due to Covid?

  • +1

Very good price for Nov flights. What should I be wary of buying from these resellers (during these times)?

    • +5

If you’re inclined to book go direct with JAL instead.

      • +11

You'd think after two years people would wise up to not book with agents by now.

        • +1

          This is ozbargain

        • I'm quite wary of buying from agents actually. Hence my question to see if anything has changed.

          • +1

@ddhar: My comment wasn't directed at you, just a general observation. Apologies if it seemed that way.

            • +1

@raptormesh: No offence taken. ;) I used to book through agents before Covid but obviously the past two years have not been forgiving on this practice (and the poor agents).

        • Booking with an agent is the only time I’ve ever had any troubles. Learnt my lesson, but I did get a 2.5k chargeback eventually. Qantas direct said no worries, here’s a voucher, use it whenever you want

  • +6

What's the chance Japan will actually be open to tourists by Nov?

    • +7

My crystal ball says maybe. It’s showing a 50% chance.

      • Obviously 50% chance. It either it or it isn't.

  • +4

They are currently have over 100k covid cases per day, are you sure you want to pay 800 to go?

    • As long as we're all vaccinated that shouldn't be a problem, should it?

    • I’d love a chance at an exotic variant

    • +1

They are currently have over 100k covid cases per day, are you sure you want to pay 800 to go?

That rate is lower than here. And since I've had Covid and don't buy into the FUD, if wasn't for arbitrary govt restrictions I'd already be there.

  • +6

Been looking at Japan Airlines flights since November 2021. They've been around $820 return from Melbourne during Easter period every month since Nov 2021 and plenty of Classic Rewards Seats via QANTAS too. In fact when rescheduling flights, we got a pricing discount. Deal is pretty standard pricing.

  • +3

Would be great if Japan is open for tourists

  • Or Buy ticket to Europe 1400$ free stopover in Tokyo

  • a note for those who are going to check that they places that youre going to attend such as attractions and theme to see if theyre open for business, last time i went most of not all of them were closed and it was a little disapointing

    • when did you go?

      • +1

        Mar 2020
theme parks like disneyland/disneysea were temporary shut
        teamlab was closed
original fish market was half empty, transitioning over to the new one.
the new fish market was close due to covid, only open to workers and selected locals

        • To be honest, just drooling about japow 🏂🏂

Don't need the theme parks to be opened..lol

        • That's roughly when I was there - they were dealing with first wave covid and had the ship parked in the harbour. Outside the big attractions things were good as was most of northern Honshu but Hokkaido had a state of emergency.

  • +2

Really want to go back to Japan, but not this year… Maybe next… Or like 2025 to be safe…. Haha

  • +2

    April this year seems optimistic.

  • +1

What's normal price usually? Doesn't seem that much discount to me.

  • +1

Ahhh I miss FUK. Oishii ramen…. I cried when Qantas stopped flying directly to FUK many years ago.

    • +8

Sounds like you're a FUK boy then (sorry, couldn't resist)

  • Probably JAL wouldn't be selling tickets for April if they were not pretty confident the borders will be open by then.

The omicron wave in Japan should be finished by March, so it's quite likely.

    • +2

Well…they cancelled my flights twice over the past couple months. I wouldn't be too confident. Their customer service is top notch though.

    • That's what I thought when I bought Qantas tickets in December to leave for Tokyo in two weeks time 😭

      • Do you have trouble getting refund from Qantas? We also booked last Dec directly through Qantas for flights in mid May this year.

        • Still waiting…. They said it will take between one and two months. My guess is they're holding out to see whether they have to cancel the flight, in which case refund, or if they can get away with a credit.
I'm still waiting on a luggage replacement 8 months after the flight… But I'd pick them any day over jetstar :)

  • -1

Honestly more waiting game til June or end of year more like

    • Thanks for posting this… It's frustrating but then it's certainty for a while.

    • That's interesting … Australia is not on the ban entry list… just the visa exemption list.

Means if you have a visa (and negative pcr test) you're right to go to Japan now.

If they reinstate the visa exemption for Australia (which they might if we open our borders for tourists end of February), travel to Japan from Australia will be possible again for tourism!

  • Can i book sept flights with any real confidence???

    • In this world? Confidence is hope…

    • No.

  • maybe i'll finally be able to return home to qld after being stuck here for 2 and a half years when and if qld is opening boarders international

    • Did you try to come home when DFAT first advised?

    • Can't you transit via Sydney?

    • I’ve had friends return from Tokyo to Sydney, can that be an option?

  • Why would you go anywhere?
    Here’s an idea
Stay at home, save lives, lock us Down

  • "Based on New Border Measures (26), countries/regions where COVID-19 variants other than the Omicron variant become dominant are to be specified separately. For all cross-border travelers and returnees from the specified countries/regions, the length of period when they are required to self-quarantine in places such as their own residence or accommodations after their entry into Japan, to follow-up checks conducted by the HCO and to refrain from using public transportation is 14 days."
