Amazon Cashback Categories on Cashrewards and ShopBack

Hi all,
After years of having my cashback on Amazon randomly rejected by Shopback and Cashrewards and not bothering to look into it too much, I’ve just been “enlightened” by a (rather condescending) Cashrewards staffer who told me the section of the app I’ve been using to gauge the product categories, is not actually the one that Amazon uses. And that the one Amazon uses is only visible if you use the desktop website, not the app or mobile site (although they never specified this in the email, I just learned it from doing a search and not seeing a category where they said it was meant to be on the app and mobile site).
Here’s part of the email, for reference:

“Please note that the product category appears on the top left of the product image, written in bold.
While looking up items in Amazon Australia, please make sure that the Category part of the Search Bar says "All" before you enter the product you want to search. Only then will you get the correct category for your item and it will be easier for you to check the cashback rate. I have added an image of my Search Bar when I looked up the item you purchased below.

** Image of Search bar with exact product name copied and pasted from product page**

Since the item you purchased is classified under the "Toys" category which had a 0% cashback rate on the date of purchase, your transaction has been declined for cashback by Amazon Australia.
I understand this can be confusing, and I apologise for the inconvenience. Please note that product categorisation and cashback rates are decided by Amazon Australia and not Cashrewards, and are subject to change at any time. It is always a good idea to check the cashback rates on the Amazon Australia store page before shopping. You can view the current store terms and cashback rates here.”

First of all, after rereading the end of the email I got extra angry, because I found what this person wrote quite condescending, considering the emails I had written prior were specifically regarding the category - the whole ARGUMENT is about the category. So for them to explain how categories work with cashback was particularly rude.
Secondly, NOWHERE that I can find on the Cashrewards or Shopback apps does it explain how to find the product categories, which is fundamental to correctly receiving cashback from Amazon, as the amounts are specific to the categories.
The only place on the Amazon app that I’ve ever seen reference to a category is at the bottom of the description in the ‘Additional information’ section, where it states where the product ranks in a category. Which in itself is even more perplexing, because it is stating this product is rated under a specific category (Kitchen and Dining, in this claim), but, in this case, is not classified under that category for cashback, at the same time 😑
There’s a lot going on here, a lot of faff and, to me, deliberate deception in ambiguity, leaving the door open for Amazon to reject a bunch of claims, unless you happen to know this very specific information.
I think the fact that they change up the cashback for categories is part of Amazon’s scheme, so once your cashback has been rejected, you can’t go back and check whether you claimed on a category that was 0% at the time. Prior to this claim, I even started taking screenshots of the cashback rates, but because the dates don’t always match-up (lots of orders, cashback approved/rejected days after the transaction, etc.) it hasn’t always been easy to track.
I’m sure there will be Ozbargainers who say “Of course that’s where you find the category, how can you not know this?” But I also have no doubt that other people are like me, the casual user who didn’t know because they weren’t told of this very specific way of finding an Amazon category (which I’m still not 100% convinced is completely legitimate, anyway, due to the ratings in other categories).
I suggested in my response email that Cashrewards put this information in their “Cashback tips” section, so there is no confusion (even admitted to in the email, as you would have read) with correctly identifying your product’s category. No reply, as yet. It’s probably Amazon’s decision to make, anyway. I doubt they would, though, as that would make it easier for successful, pain-free claims 😐
I did a search on Ozbargain to see if this topic had already been posted about, and was surprised nothing had been posted, yet. I figured using “Amazon cashback” as my search phrase would bring anything up if it had been previously posted about.

Anyway, sorry for the massive post, it has just really pissed me off!
Has anyone else had issues with this, or not known this information and wondered why their cashback kept randomly being rejected by Shopback and/or Cashrewards, despite believing you had all your ducks in a row for a successful claim? Has anyone been given conflicting information, or even magically been able to speak to someone at Amazon about this (a massive stretch, I know 😁).
Cheers for making it through this post 👍😊

    Tldr.

But it was worth taking the time to post this comment?

  • -3

    what did that say?

Read it and find out. Or move along.

    • No idea, gave up half way through.

      • If you read at least half you know what it says.

People looking at the post and taking time out of their day to scroll down the page and make snide comments…what’s the point?

          Y not bra

I have faced this all too regularly. I have one complaint outstanding right now where 'beauty' is not covered by a cashback but 'premium beauty' is covered. In this case, Amazon stuck a very readable 'premium beauty' tag right in the middle of the screen. For any reasonable customer, the category is clear - 'premium beauty'. This one will end up with the SA OCBS if Shopback comes back with the same weak excuse they often use (surprisingly similar to the response you received rom Cashrewards - looks like they use the same template).

    • +4

I had exactly the same problem with Amazon on Shopback. I only started religiously tracking my Amazon cashback over the last few months and noticed most of the time they end up with $0 cashback despite the category clearly being eligible for cashback. I wonder how many of my transactions over the years ended up like this without me knowing. I can definitely say I have trust issues now with these cashback offers because of this. Lol

In the same boat here. Bought premium beauty (face mask) on the $2 Amazon promo on Shopback as I thought they had cashback but ShopBack rejected it. Won't have bought otherwise. Not bothered trying for Shpback Amazon cashbacks anymore. Just too confusing.

    • +2

Haha yes, no doubt they use the same template. I love a copy+paste where they haven’t even read what you’ve written. Hence the feeling of condescension. Some other peanut said CS have spoken to hundreds of people a day, so I should be compassionate to their rudeness? Talking to hundreds of people is their job - do it right! 🤷😊

  • -6

Another day, another person finding customer service people condescending. Hmmm you deal with one person, that person deals with hundreds because Amazon category is shit. Show some compassion.

It’s probably Amazon’s decision to make, anyway

    Yes

Anyway, sorry for the massive post, it has just really pissed me off!

Should be sorry. Email CR with an apology

Has anyone been given conflicting information

Sure have. It is unfortunate. Sooner or later Amazon will pull out with 0% cashback, like Dan Murphy, or we have a flat 1% like on eBay.

    • I was waiting for you. Welcome.

Please note that the product category appears on the top left of the product image, written in bold.

TIL. Good to know. I came across this post because I had this very question. The other confusing aspect is the category names often don't align properly with the cashback site's T&Cs.

The only place on the Amazon app that I’ve ever seen reference to a category is at the bottom of the description in the ‘Additional information’ section, where it states where the product ranks in a category. Which in itself is even more perplexing, because it is stating this product is rated under a specific category (Kitchen and Dining, in this claim), but, in this case, is not classified under that category for cashback, at the same time

This is what I used to check too!

Exactly! Thank you - at least one person to make me feel less crazy 😁 It’s a total scam, we’re set up to fail.
If more people read this post and agree, I say we all contact Shopback and Cashrewards to demand clarity around these very murky parameters. They’re complicit in allowing Amazon to create terms that their customers aren’t privy to.
    Power to the people! ✊😁

At this point, because Amazon has so many categories with 0% cashback, frequent changes to rates, and the totally unreliable way of checking what category a product is in, I never buy from Amazon assuming I'll get the cashback (except when it's something like the 12% cashback on everything promos). Best to buy if you are happy with the price without cashback, and any cashback you get is just sweetener. It's so sad because when I first started using Cashrewards, the Amazon cashback rates were so good, but then Amazon got enough returning customers so they gimped the whole program to the confusing vagueness we have now.

    • +3

I have dozens and dozens of entries on my cashrewards listing and only one is consistently shown as 'declined'. Amazon.
When I buy from Amazon I always hope for CR, but never rely on it as 99 times out of 100 it is declined.

      • +2

@Almost Banned - yes! It’s f$cked and I’m tired of it! Why don’t Shopback and Cashrewards just remove Amazon? Like you said 99 out of 100 times it’s rejected - how is this benefiting Shopback and Cashrewards’ customers? Honest answer: it isn’t and they don’t care, it also brings them business. And that’s bullshit, too.

Can you tell I’m really angry about this? 😁

    • +2

Yeah, honestly, this is the first time I really followed up on and argued the case on cashback from Amazon. Due to the higher promo percentage I was looking forward to a decent return. Still small, but not the usual 14c I never gave a shit about. It wasn’t until this email that I decided to give a shit, purely because it’s just another rort from a company that has enough money to do the right thing. I’m also thinking big picture, all the cents that got rejected because of this dodgy little scheme, and it just really pissed me off. And why is Amazon even bothering with these cashback apps if they’re not going to be legit about it? Surely they have enough customers that this wouldn’t really make a massive difference? And then I got more pissed off, because I realised this company is truly trying to scam every. single. cent. it can by using these apps and rejecting the cashback through undisclosed shady Ts&Cs. And it’s gross. I’m filled with self-loathing for even being a Prime member, but their prices are competitive and convenient for low income earners, such as myself (I truly hate myself for this 😒😁).

Screw Bezos and screw Cashrewards and Shopback for facilitating it - surely they’re aware.

Obviously I’ve had a day, but honestly, this just isn’t good enough, no matter how insignificant it is in the grand scheme.

  • ergh, so many cashback issues. dont buy anything because it's of a claimed cashback. Just too easy to be rejected.

    • Instead of “don’t buy anything”, how about Shopback and Cashrewards remove Amazon as a retailer because of their dodgy practices? They’re not giving a shit about their customers, either, it seems. Not good enough.

      • money talks, and it works for most people, including myself.

Gotyourback has stated quite a few times (comments or post) in ShopBack Amazon deals that you can see the categories only on the desktop website when people complained about getting 0%. But I agree it's very misleading as I'm used to scrolling down to see the category in the description part of the listing

    • +1

Stated here, on OzB? It doesn’t say it anywhere on the Shopback Amazon page. Customers are expected to search for Gotyourback’s random comments to find this information they didn’t know they were supposed to look for in the first place? Seriously, they know this information but have left it off the app and haven’t compelled Amazon to post it in the cashback terms. Just continually denying claims. Total bullshit.

      Thanks for sharing, too 👍😊

      • +2

Yeah on Ozbargain, i remember seeing it a few times (comments section maybe?) when people commented that their purchase tracked at 0 and he pasted the 'you can see categories on desktop etc' quite a few times, but it should deff be highlighted at least in the notes of the terms. one time i bought a tablet (at 5% cb), took a screen recording and they didnt click the video and still denied me. i was like, thats very clearly a tablet. still no. Gotyourback did end up crediting it to me, but i mentioned that I did get it tracked from CR for the same purchase which i cancelled as SB had upsized cashback a few hours later.

It's pretty rough shopping on Amazon with cashback, I've been caught out where there was a cashback on toys but, surprise surprise, one "toy" I bought, was actually classified under "baby" which had 0% cashback.

See picture here for what I'm talking about https://imgur.com/a/SmIxC6Z

Amazon saw fit to invalidate the entire order for cashback, the majority of it was Lego.

    • +1

Thanks for sharing 😊 After reading so many comments over the past few years on here, below Amazon cashback posts, of people’s claims being rejected for unknown reasons, I had a feeling this post would bring a few of those stories out. It’s messed up that this has been kept from the average customer for so long. Unless they make three follow-up complaints after years and someone finally explains Amazon’s illogical, ever-changing categorising system. You’re set up to fail. What a surprise 😒

    • Also, one Lego was classified as ‘Baby’?? Give me a break! 🙄

The product I bought was a Tiki mug. It’s a functional mug with images showing it decorated with cocktail umbrellas and liquid in it. Plus, in the description, it’s referred to as a “drinking cup”. It, too, is actually a ‘Toy’, apparently. Despite, as I posted, it having sales rankings in ‘Kitchen & Dining’ and ‘Coffee Cups and Mugs’ 😶 I truly believe they make it up as they go along.

I gave up on Amazon cashback a long time ago as it's not worth the hassle. I had the same conversation many years ago after a declined cashback and was advised of the inconsistent category issues. I've also noticed recently that if i bookmark an item the bookmark description has the category appended to the title. This may be browser dependent?

    • +1

Wow. This has been known for years and not shared on the apps. Greedy jerkburgers. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had great CS from both Shopback and Cashrewards at times, but for the companies as a whole to be hiding vital information from customers that stops them from receiving cashback (when so many - every day - believe they’re doing the right thing) for years, it’s utterly f%cked up.

None of my Black Friday purchases’ cash back from Amazon has been honoured by SB. Thinking of ditching SB for any major purchases in the future.

    • That sucks! Yeah, I can understand why.

    • None of my Black Friday purchases from Amazon has been honoured

why's that? cashback is on all categories.

Firstly, it wasn't tracked by SB, upon lodging missing cashback claim, this is what they sent me after two months.

Thank you for submitting a missing cashback claim.

We have appealed this missing cashback claim with the merchant and found that the merchant has deemed ShopBack ineligible to earn commissions on this transaction which results in us being unable to pass the cashback along to you.

ShopBack awards cashback on your transactions on the basis that the merchant attributes your order to ShopBack and pays us a commission, they are the deciding party on a sale being attributed to ShopBack.

There are quite a few reasons why these orders may not be attributed to ShopBack. This includes:

        1. If a user clicks on a Honey, Cashrewards, or another chrome extension after clicking from ShopBack
        2. If other web pages (including search sites, social media, store sites, promotional/discount sites) or web browsers are opened after clicking through ShopBack
        3. Clicking through to another page from a banner, pop-up, or advertisement on the store’s webpage whilst shopping
        4. Antivirus/Cleanup or Adblocker applications block or disrupt cashback tracking (Tracking cookies are required to track transaction)
        5. When the order falls under the merchant’s exclusions, including the use of promo codes not listed on ShopBack.

In the meantime, do let me know if there is anything I can do to help or share my best advice on earning cashback. I’d be here to support whenever you need it.

        Regards,
        Team ShopBack

And who would have predicted - I won my case. The SB agent explained it this way "I have checked your Amazon AU order and it's indeed shown the wrong amount." In fact, this is not an explanation at all, merely an acknowledgement that the cashback amount of $0.00 was wrong.
I can also tell you, the bonus cashback associated with the purchase will also be reflected in my account.
Admittedly, my case was a lot clearer than many of those posted here, but…

    There is hope.
