What level of coverage are you looking for?

Cheapest isnt always the best… You need to compare what is on offer. and exactly what you are after.

  • One that you get with your insurance?

  • Tesla's?

Based on your supplied information, and knowing your car, age, suburb, claims history, average mileage, additional driver details and excess preference, I have generated quotes across all major insurance brands and also compared these to the three main insurance aggregators. This determined that AAMI was the best insurer for you.

But the OP wasn't looking for insurance…

  • Get it free with AAmi insurance

    • I think AAMI is only free for first year or free for some category.

      • I think it is only free for comprehensive insurance

        • Nop it's a add on.

Not sure if this will still work, might depend on your insurer. Just wait until you do need roadside then call them up pay the 12 months on the day, they'll come to help.
They may not do this anymore, but worth a call to check.
Saves paying each year if you can just pay the +/- $100 on the spot.

  • If you are regularly servicing/ maintaning the car, know how to change the tyres, jump start and if the car is not too old, you do not need roadside assistance.

Can’t jump start a dead battery which isn’t just flat

Don't batteries get tested at abovementioned regular servicing?

  • Just check the actual towing distance covered by the recovery bundled with your insurance. Some will only recover your vehicle for 30 to 40 Ks, thereafter you get charged by the K and I recall AAMI being around $5.

I was looking for cover for a trip with my well maintained but ageing car, expecting that if something broke it wouldn't be trivial, so I'd rather be able to get the vehicle home (Instead of only to the nearest dodgy garage)

In the end I went for the premium RACV cover on a monthly basis and cancelled after my trip.

  • New(ish) car? Don’t bother. Just learn how to change a tyre and don’t go far from home.
