I tried low/no alcohol beer of Tinnies, Great northern, James Squire, Carlton, Peroni, Coopers, Heineken.
Tinnies is the best. Fresh hop favour, close to real beer in tasting.
Great northern, Carlton, Heineken are very good as well. Great northern is the best among these 3. Carlton is a bit strong, heavy in favour. Great northern is refreshing, Heineken is a bit light.
Then Coopers, it is average in tasting.
James Squire is a little sour, not sure why.
Do not buy Peroni, it has a weird taste, like a green vegetable.

Ultra Low Alcohol doesn't sound good. Do they have an Ultra High one?

I think I will stick to buying some 5% Leo on Wed.

      Ultra high one hmm.
      BrewDog Tactical Nuclear Penguin?

I've tried a few ultra low beers and hadn't really enjoyed any until I tired Pirate Life's Point Nine. Highly recommended.

Wonder how it compares flavour wise to "Heaps Normal XPA"

    • +1

Nowhere near as good, but your paying half the price unless there's a 20 dollar off on eBay.

    • DUTYFREE for free shipping from HN site

Given that the excise on a normal case of beer is over $20 (+10% gst), $30 for Coles Group home-brand barley water does not sound like a particular bargain.

(has anyone made the "making love in a canoe" reference yet?)

  • @paddywide the TENOFF code ended the other night. Tried it just now and no good, sadly.

    2k pts ends midnight

    • Thanks

      • im afraid you haven't tried the best, lucky for you though as you will get to blow your mind for the first time, the best you can get is "Heaps Normal Quiet XPA", i promise you it blows everything else out of the water, if you served this to someone and didn't tell them, they would not know it was low alcohol beer

        • I would expect it will be good, as it has doubled in price. I won't spend that much on a non alcohol beer. Also, due date is another important factor for a beer. I found Tinnes is just 2 months old in my closed FirstChoice. Initially I want to buy Great northern, but I visit 5 stores, and all they have is nearly due. Then I try Tinnes. I won't try Heaps or any other better/expensive beer at the moment. Tinnes is good enough to me.

          • @paddywide: No seriously, you must try it, you don't have to buy a carton, just buy 1 can to try, just so you can experience it

            • @Qazxswec: As I said before, I really don't want to bring my standard to another level. As it is mostly likely Heaps is much better. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Bought a six pack for $10 as a tester. Stuck one in the freezer to chill it right down. Not the best as very very watery and barely any flavour at all. One does get a slight beer aftertaste once swallowed but not a lot. Perhaps mine is chilled too much (I like it icy cold). Having said that, it's refreshing enough on a hot balmy Sydney evening. Won't be buying more but will drink the six I bought.

Good beer isn't supposed to be consumed icy cold, because you can't taste it! There's a reason that all the marketing for Carlton Draught, Great Northern, Hahn Ice, VB, etc show them in an ice filled Esky!

      • I disagree (perhaps a personal thing), and enjoy my Balter XPA frosty. Even better if it's at a point of it nearly turning into a slush. Poured into an icy cold glass, it tastes great. I know what you mean though, the colder it gets can often mute flavours.

    • I did try to chill it as icy cold. It tastes the same. It is the best among what I drink before. Maybe your beer is close to due date. Mine is just 2 months old. I am in Syd too.

  • No shipping to WA unfortunately.

non alcoholic beer reminds me of tv manufacturers pushing 3D sets. all the press says how good it is but people don't want it and it will die off.

    • A lot of people do want it, but then again, a lot of people did want 3D TV's so who knows, wait and see

    • ha ha ha mule

    • I've been drinking low alc beers as a healthy alternative for about 5-6 years. I only like to have 2-3 alcoholic drinks a week so, especially in summer, this hits the spot in terms of cravings but yes the market has exploded as the big names are discovering they can make a profit from it. I suspect it will reconsolidate at major retailers over the next few years as winners become apparent.

I always said Iight beer was a waste of time, but somehow I now am drinking this on the nights when I want a beer but know that I shouldn't! I should also admit that I'm >40yo and probably fit the target market. When I was in my 20s or 30s I wouldn't have considered it!

    • Likewise and the reason I bought a six pack to see how well it would represent as "having a beer" but giving the liver a break! Anyhow, it's refreshing if thirsty and has a beer taste so better than nothing if in the mood OR if driving. It still looks like a beer :-)

If you think these are good, try the Heaps Normal XPA

  • Have tried Mornington Free, James Squire. My description of all I've tried, is the aroma is sweet malt, almost like unfermented wort when I used to do homebrew and not that pleasant. Is zero alcohol actually fermented with the alcohol removed? Otherwise, 0.5% might be the way to go as it has gone through the fermentation process.

Theres 2 ways to make non alcoholic beer

    • substitute the yeast with one that doesn't produce alcohol

    • brew normal beer and remove the alcohol afterwards.

The second option produces the best tasting beer, but is far more expensive to produce. It requires a second set of infrastructure, and involves waste as part of the beer is lost. Carlton zero is made this way, and probably any other brands made by CUB.

Even though non alcoholic beer has no excise tax, it costs more to make than real beer, so it sells for about the same price at retail

    • this explains a lot, thanks!

    • I don't buy into that. They can on sell the ethanol for hand sanitizer etc, and we all know there is demand for that.

      • You can buy a litre of methylated spirits- 95% ethanol, for less than $5. It's not worth much, even less to a manufacturer

        • All relative. Before excise, transport costs, retail mark up etc.. how much do you think they are making on beer?

If they can sell 1 litre of methanol for $1.50 it would be equal or a better return than the beer.

Bridge Road Free time is the best NA beer I've tried. Would drink normally.

Had 8 different ones over Dry July 2020 and three this year in a Jan/Fed 4 week dry period.

Might give this a go as still off the booze for the next 18
