Alternatives to Dyson Cordless Vacuum Cleaner under $400

I am looking for a Dyson alternative to a stick vacuum cleaner (cordless) that is powerful for carpets and equally good on hard floors. I see that I can get a Dyson v8 absolute at $630 after discounts on eBay. However, I would like to be conscious of my spending and seek alternatives for Dyson.

I am happy to be guided on robot vacuums too. something that will do the job is all I am after. I have hard floors (ground floor) and carpets on the 1st floor. Single male, no pets. Need something with powerful suction as it has been a few months since I had used a Vacuum.

I see suggestions for Xiaomi G10, G11, G12. So many options and similar specs. Super confused :-( I need better battery (with replaceable batteries available, powerful suction, sturdy and can be relied upon for 3 years at least)

TIA.

just fyi a robot vacuum doesnt replace a manual one. It's more about regularly cleaning open walkwalks/common floor areas.

    • There you go :) that's the level of knowledge I had on robotic ones :) thanks for clarifying mate !

      • No worries, here is my 2 comments from another thread

        1. It's not a replacement for a proper vacuum – it's fantastic at consistently cleaning across large areas of the house. but it can only vacuum where it can reach. Things like skirting boards, under low couches, window sills etc, obviously cant be vaccumed.
        2. To get the best clean, you need to set up the house to suit. Basically consider if you had a baby or cat that likes to chew on things – what would you do to prep the house? Bag straps and boot laces are what usually gets it jammed at my place.
    • There are plenty of alternatives to Dyson but very few replacements!

    Get dyson v7?

    • I have a strong feeling that there might be some other product that does the job equally good but not as expensive as Dyson.

I prefer to pay for the work it does and don't care about the brand tbh…

Could be but v7 is not bad for current price, better bin released system than v6 as I remembered. Just as Apple, dyson hold their value, so if you not happy you can sell it with small lost.
I had v6 for years and upgraded to v8 I think, they expensive but they work well.
Although their support is hit and missed.

        • I definitely agree on the holding value part.

        • My daughter has a v7. The first time I went to empty it, I thought it must have been a cheap knock-off. Plastic fittings that simply didn't operate smoothly. After I found out how it is supposed to work, I realise it is functional, but still a bit clunky and not the quality I was expecting.

But what sucks is the battery life. On low suction you might vacuum 1/2 a small house. On max, I would say 3 or 4 minutes tops.

If someone offered me a v7 I'd say just put it in the trash.

I have a Chinese knockoff that was on sale here a few years ago. I reckon it's much better than the v7.

My Dyson V11 broke after 2 years, 6 months. Expensive vacuum with poor build quality. Yet the two Xiaomi handheld vacs at work which are used daily have been flawless. Wouldn't waste money on a Dyson again.

    • Which models are they if I may ask ?

    • The Dysons' are not built to last. We have major stress fractures in the plastic across the body, power head and wand on a four year old Dyson V10.

Luckily when I complained about a faulty battery one and a half years in to ownership, the first CA rep misdiagnosed and sent me a new body which I put straight in storage. Then the subsequent CA rep sent a new battery. Might try and hit them up for a power head and wand under ACL, but don't fancy my chances.

    • my experience exactly

Thank you. had it on sale (50% off) on JB Hi-Fi for $199. Surely can't go wrong at that price and can always return if it doesn't work. Thanks for the suggestion mate !

My mum replaced her Dyson V8 (dead battery) with a Dreame V9 and swears it’s just as good.

I think they go for about $200 on Kogan.

    • If your Mum hasn't disposed of the V8 yet: You can buy batteries to suit a V8 on eBay for under $50. You need to unscrew ONE screw to change them over. I did this for my 5 year old V6 recently and it's now running like new.

      • I would not recommend to buy battery on eBay as mind just died after 6 months (purchased on 22 May 2020), costed me $50. The seller that I purchased stated 5 years warranty when the item was listed, but I could not find the item anymore, the link was removed. I sent couple messages to the seller but no response. Contact eBay with no help. My point is unless the seller has really good reviews, at least needs to have more than 10k reviews I would say, I would not recommend to buy from there. Disregard what they state regarding the battery cells are used (Sony, Samsung, Panasonic), unless you can see what is inside. Today I just purchased the Dyson battery from their website.

Had many Dyson's in the past, useless after about 12 to 16 months.

Brought a Xiaomi Mi G10 Cordless nearly 1 year ago and have never looked back.

thank you all for your inputs. I have purchased Eufy HomeVac S11 Lite Stick Vac (Red) on JB Hi-Fi which was on sale for $199. Taking a gamble and can return if it doesn't work well :-) Fingers crossed all goes well..

  • They did sell a Karcher one for around $400, looks like its exclusive to SEA now

  • We have a Dreame V9, got it for $190. Value for money wise really can't fault it so far (had it about 12 months), I disagree when others say they are equal to or better than Dysons. For $200 give me a Dyson V8 over a Dreame V9 anyday, however I don't think a Dyson is 4x better. It's built well, it doesn't feel cheap but we only have a house that is largely tiled and the carpet is low profile, I'm not sure how it would go with thick carpet. It has 3 power settings and normally have to run around in the 2nd power setting as the first isn't quite enough. Emptying the canister almost always results in me having to fish it out with my hands, this is because we have animals and it just ends up a hair and dirt/dust mix and won't fall out on it's on accord, we never had that issue with our old dyson. I also worry the battery is degrading quite quickly as it drops from 3 to 2 bars very quickly, didn't used to.

Bit late to this but if you find the $200 unit is too gutless here's another suggestion…

Dunno if they're cheaper than the equivalent Dyson, but I freaking love my LG A9 - user replaceable batteries unlike the Dysons so buy as many as you want for spares and don't have to wait for charging time

Mine is from 2019 and still going strong, A9 Master 2x. It was a mid to high model at the time competing with the V8 when it was Dyson's top of the line. I think the only higher model from LG had the mop attachment as well. Mine came two batteries, hard floor and carpet heads, and other fiddly attachments, and a charging stand that can charge one battery in the stand itself and the other in the vacuum (it charges them one at a time, the point is you plug it all in and forget about it and both batteries end up charged).

You can of course buy the basic A9 model (AFAIK they're all the same motor head, just the accessories and colours vary) and buy the extra batteries or other bits you actually need separately if you wish - depends on how much of the extra up-sell crap you want.

    • i have the exact same vac and i love using the vac now as it’s so easy to get out and i’m disgusted at the amount of dust /dirt it picks up daily .i honestly don’t know where it all comes from

  • I have a Eufy S11 robot vacuum and I love the thing but in saying that you also need to vacuum with a standard vacuum once a week or so also. The reason being that it tends to act like the old fashioned carpet sweepers in that it doesn't get the ingrained grit or vacuum corners or move the furniture LOL. In saying that though it gets under heavy furniture and each time I run it I am amazed at the dirt it finds. I have an ancient corded Meile as my weekly vac but for it's purpose the Eufy S11 is worth it for sure. The added bonus is I bought spare filters, rollers and brushes etc from Bangood really cheaply. It must be a standard "foreign" make because I have noticed you can get cheap knock off spares online

  • i brought LG cordzero and i LOVE IT , when it comes on sale on ebay bing lee i got mine for about $520 about 18 months ago but gg had it for $399 near xmas so it may of dropped in price but fantastic stick vac

I went through the same exercise last month, looking at cordless stick vacuum cleaners and also have a robot vac. I manage a two-storey Airbnb as as well as a two-storey house - both with pets and have bought four vacuum cleaners in the last 5 years, I got a “Shark Rotator” – currently half price ($200) if you buy directly from Shark online.
I would recommend this – have been blown away by its suction power and versatility.
    - less than a week after we steam cleaned a sofa and rug, the Shark extracted another litre of dirt from those just-cleaned items.
    - The “lift away“ function is useful for reaching high corners and doing stairs or crevices and car. You would never be able to do this with a robot.
    - It is so good, we are now considering replacing our highend Miele barrel with another Shark rotator. Make sure you get “rotator” and not “navigator” which doesn’t have the “lift away”
    - we’ve also had cordless upright vacuum cleaners – but they do not compare with the new Shark. Overall a cordless cannot beat a cord for power.

Take a look at the Shark vs Dyson reviews - Shark is not that well known in Australia, but it is a major brand in the US and it seems that many people prefer a shark over Dyson.

    • I sure will. Thanks for your tip.

      • Let us know what you finally get.

        • I took myself a Eufy HomeVac S11 Lite Stick Vac (Red) on JB Hi-Fi which was on sale for $199.

I am looking to gift one more to my sister and will be looking at shark today :)

          • @pandaaram: how is the eufy s11 lite? I am also looking at getting one

    • i used to have a shark navigator years ago and it was fantastic back then

    • Is it just me or does the rotator look like it is not cordless?
