Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. It’s the story of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race known as the Combine, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Playing as Alyx Vance, you are humanity’s only chance for survival.

      • +1

The bit that got me is when you have that creature following you and you have to break glasses to distract it.

    • Pretty much lol

  • +8

    This game is amazing…
Nothing like a face crab in VR

  • Good price, 3rd time since Black Friday at this price.

  • +2

Are there third party keys, or region discounts that are attainable for cheaper than this price usually? Or is this roughly the all time best price?

Want to get it eventually, but happy to wait around for a better price too.

    • +3

It's worth every penny, just buy it.
You are delaying the best VR experience for what, extra $10 saved?

      • Work okay seated? Don't have enough room for anything room scale

        • Half Life: Alyx has in-game accessibility options that cater for seated play. If you only have one hand you can also play in one-handed mode.

        • +1

Didn't try it seating. Standing is okay. You don't have to walk, just wave your hands to reload.

      • Hmm 542rub ($10 AUD) in the Russian store..

        • +1

And? You can't buy it from another country unless you change a region in your steam settings. And along with VPN you will also need a local billing address and payment method (a card from a Russian bank).
If someone from Russia buys it for you, they can't send it as a gift as Valve banned gifts from cheap regions to more expensive ones. You can still gift the other way around, though.

          • @Azro: And I think it's time you hand over your OzB license for not having a Russian billing address
Pulls out his trusty RUB card

            • @digitizer: I do have it.
I don’t think it’s easy enough for an ordinary gamer to do the same.

          • @Azro: Could you theoretically have a Russian steam account and family share it to your main account? Or no go for cheap regions?

  • Which VR headset are you guys using ?

Quest 2. Best bang for buck. Couple cheap upgrades and solid wireless VR setup.

      • what upgrades? Have a quest 2 and have been wondering what accessories are worth buying

        • +3

Kiwi or Esimen strap are much better than elastic standard one. Depending on games you play maybe some 3D printed addon for controller, like guns or table tennis, golf club grips etc.

If you're playing via PC/Steam, a standalone WiFi 6 router. I had issues with Nest WiFi and lag, quality drops. Ran a link cable but that's a pain as it always gets in the way. Cheap $60 Xiamoi AX1800 directly to PC and runs smooth as wirelessly without quality drops to keep up.

        • I have a Quest 2 and just use the official elite strap as well as the official link cable. Got that plugged in to the USB-C on my motherboard and good to go. Using a 5700XT.

I did have to make some adjustments in the Oculus app to get smooth performance though, like reducing the PPI to match that of the Valve Index and I also used the following command lines in the games' properties -

          -console -vconsole +vr_fidelity_level_auto 0 +vr_fidelity_level 3 -nowindow -novid

        • FrankenQuest 2 mod with VR Cover silicone cover + Reloptix Oculus Quest 2 VR Prescription Lens Insert Kit if you need glasses

          • HTC Deluxe audio strap
          • 3d printed adapters
          • Reloptix prescription lens inserts
          • Counter weight(plus battery pack attachment)
          • VR cover
      • Upgrades to the headset or PC?

        • +1

To headset. Ie straps and accessories

      • Oh! I never thought that one could be connected to PC. lol. Will take a look. Thanks. What GPU do you recommend? Would a GTX 1080 be enough with adjusted in game graphics settings?

Also, does it feel like you are looking through a binocular when playing? If so, I will puke in no time. lol.

        • 1080 will be fine, game is pretty well optimised.

I ended up reducing the Oculus resolution in the Oculus app for when it's connected to PC, I made mine match that of the Valve Index. No issues for me, plays smooth once I made some adjustments.

        • You can download a SteamVR performance test in Steam but 1080 should be OK. I have a 3080 so no issues. Doesn't feel like looking through binoculars. VR is 3D so it's pretty immersive. Very different from playing regular PC games as you can pick things up and look at them, or instead of strafing you actually move to look around a corner and shoot or return to cover, etc.

Main thing is you need a bit of room. You can play in a small room but make empty any clutter out of it, more space is better.

        • Just finished the game last week. Ran fine on my GTX 980.

        • It does feel like binos try grab a Pimax or other wide for headset if u can

          • @TightBungholio: Cool, never heard of this. 200FOV seems nice. But at that resolutions my card will crawl and I dont want to invest in a GPU till next gen at these crazy prices.

    • Pimax 5k field of view makes other headsets unusable lol

    • First play through on a Odyssey Plus.

Played briefly on my Quest 2. I'm planning on doing a play through with oculus link using teleport and then walking in areas.

    • Reverb G2 here, it's been great.

  • Half-Life best video game franchise

  • +1

Game is almost 2 years old now hoping for a follow up I’ve played it around a dozen time’s already but it truly is the best

  • can this be played entirely seated?

    • If necessary yes it’s a bit awkward but I do it when I’m lazy otherwise if you can stand in a spot much better for looking around

  • +2

This game is really good, and was intended to be a catalyst to lead many great VR games in the future… At least this game was good.

  • +1

Must buy PCVR game. Plus all the free mods available extends this game out massively/infinitely. Bioshock, Goldeneye, survival, custom campaigns, putt putt golf, lightsabers, portal etc.

  • +1

Perfect timing, my VR is arriving today….

  • Can you play this as non-VR on a pc, or would it be a pretty bad game that way?

    If yes - how?

    • I believe there are mods which can allow this, though I'm not too sure.

I just searched this up and there were quite a few results.

  • I've heard that too but I don't know if it's really a game that's worth playing at that point - was hoping someone had tried it?
